    3. We had sauerkraut and ribs also but after living in the south so many years we don't take any chances so in keeping with the tradition of the area we also had black-eyed peas and hog jowls. It seams that most all areas have some sort of cabbage dish for News Years, does anyone know how this all got started ? Would be interesting to find out. 1. New Year tradition..
    2. Marianne Hitchcock Smith
    3. Ann, My grandmother has passed on this tradition to me. We make ribs and kraut (with a hidden quarter in it) to have just after the new year rings in at midnight. Then pork (roast, ribs or other product) with kraut or cabbage for dinner New Years day. The tradition with the quarter is that the person that gets it will have lots of money in the coming year. My grandmother was from Van Lear, her father from Lawrence County and her mother from Hazard, Kentucky. I am not sure if the tradition came from her YOUNG/THORNSBERRY side or if it came from the HITCHCOCKs which were from Denver. 2. Jim Hawes
    3. Hello Ann, Yes, indeed our family has always had cabbage on New Year's Day complete with dimes! Yes, silver coins were boiled and placed in the cabbage. This tradition goes back I don't know how many generations but many. Have you ever heard of the silver coins? Regards & Happy New Year, Jim Ann Lemaster- Applegate wrote: > I am just wondering how many on this list follows the tradition of eating > cabbage on the first day of a New Year? > Also, for all of those wonderful cooks out there...feel free to share any > yummy cabbage recipes ...after all this is keeping with tradition! > > Ann Lemaster-Applegate > Listowner > > ==== KYJOHNSO Mailing List ==== > Comments or suggestions pertaining to this list may be sent to the listowner, Ann Lemaster-Applegate > annapplegate@maysvilleky.net > Visit the Johnson County Historical Society homepage: > http://www.rootsweb.com/~kyjchs/johnson.html

    2. Hello All, We had Cabbage Rolls, one with a coin(dime) in it, for dinner! Tradition in our family says that everyone who has Cabbage on New Years will have good luck for the year and the person who "gets" the Cabbage Roll with the coin in it will have money all year. This has been a tradition in our family as long as I can remember, some 55-60 years! Happy New Year to all, and...... don't forget your Cabbage!! Jim Wright, Huntington, WV..

    3. God Make A Regular Man Out OF Me This I would like to be-braver and bolder, Just a bit wiser because I am older, Just a bit kinder to those I may meet, Just a bit manlier taking defeat; This for the New Year my wish and my plea Lord, make a regular man out of me. This I would like to be-just a bit finer, More of a smiler and less of a whiner, Just a bit quicker to stretch out my hand Helping another who's struggling to stand, This is my prayer for the New Year to be, Lord, make a regular man out of me. This I would like to be-just a bit fairer, Just a bit better, and just a bit squarer, Not quite so ready to censure and blame, Quicker to help every man in the game, Not quite so eager men's failings to see, Lord, make a regular man out of me. This I would like to be-just a bit truer, Less of the wisher and more of the doer, Broader and bigger, more willing to give, Living and helping my neighbor to live ! This for the New Year my prayer and my plea God, make a regular man out of me. ~EDGAR A. GUEST~
