Bud and Johnson County Group, we have had a very lively little tete 'a tete on another genealogical search group to which I belong. The focus is "Famous People to Whom We are related..we think". It has been fun primarily due to the tongue-in-cheek attitude we all have taken on this "dangerous" issue. Some of the "famous" people who have popped up are Abe Lincoln, Mary Todd, George Bush, Barbara Bush, etc. It has been a conversation-starter and sometimes, while we are all explaining our connections to the 'rich and famous', one line of one "cousin" runs into an unexplored but connected line of another. Cannot take this kind of thing too seriously, but let's have a go at it IF we dare. It makes sense to me that the Church was located in the area that is now under water because I know the property where the Gambill family used to live was also cleared for the lake. I'm not sure where the William Wallace McKenzie homestead was located. W.W. McKenzie is my husband's great-grandfather. Do you have any clue about that homestead's location? Picture is in the McKenzie Album on Photopoint. I never would have figured out that the Cold Springs Church used to be called Cuba Church. I remember seeing that church referred to in the past but did not know that my husband's family had any connection to it. You mentioned that your family was associated with the church since it's formation. Does that include when it was called Cuba Church? Thanks for your help Ann. Thank you Ann! I did not check any further than to see that it was on your list of churches. This is great information! Do you have any idea of a date for the picture I just put online? I am so excited because today I received pictures of my husband's McKenzie & Gambill ancestors who lived in Redbush, Johnson County, Kentucky. Included in the package is a photo of the Cold Springs United Baptist Church. The photo was taken during the years that the McKenzie and Gambill families worshiped there. I think that would have been sometime during the late 1800's or early 1900's. Ann, I see that the Cold Springs Church is included in your list of Johnson County Churches. I am wondering if you or anyone else might be able to tell me more information about the church or be able to pinpoint the date of the photo. I have just posted it at: http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumList?u=573222 Scroll down the page to McKenzie Family. I will be adding more photos for the McKenzie, Gambill and Estep families ASAP. Thanks for any help you can give me. Sharon McKenzie Pleasant Hill, CA
Hi again! Chat will resume tomorrow night (TUESDAY) at 9 p.m. EST . As the days begin to shorten, we will move the time up to correspond! Hope to see a bunch of you there! Ann
Isn't it wonderful to meet new cousins? I have been corresponding by e-mail and phone with a few new cousins on my ADAMS line. We plan to meet in person one day and I am just thrilled thinking about it! Sherri Hale mentioned her "miniature genealogists". I have a miniature genealogist also. My 8 year old son loves to go to Johnson County with me. He likes helping find stones in cemeteries and is pretty handy with a camera. By involving our kids, we get them interested in family at an early age and it is sure to carry over in their adult lives. I have been looking at my calendar trying to decide a weekend next spring for our Johnson County Get Together. I think I prefer to have it a bit later than the first weekend of April this year, as last year it turned cold on us and even snowed a bit. I am open to suggestions. One thing we need to keep in mind is that we cannot do this on a holiday weekend. If you are interested in coming, please let me know. I have several cemeteries lined up for the JCCCP to clean and transcribe this fall after the snakes slither back into their holes. Anyone interested in helping? If so contact me, please! I think that's about it for now! Have a great day of research! Ann
Vickie Have printed versions of 1910 and 1920 Johnson County Census Will look up anything that you want. Let me know' Kayleene Lowe [email protected]
Does any one know where I can find an index for 1910 and 1920 Johnson County Census? Help! Vickie
INFORMATION NEEDED: In 1990 the Johnson County Historical published VOL-1 of Johnson County Cemeteries. In this vol it had a STUMBO CEMETERY listing for West Van Lear, Johnson Co Ky. I believe this to be a mistake in the name of this cemetery, location is ok , if I am correct it should be the CUMBO CEMETERY. Based on several obituary's and places of burials. The listing for this cemetery in question is online at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jccem/ Would appreciate FOR SURE information in getting the name of this cemetery cleared up. Yes i saw that in NC. My grandfather was on his parents census and someone else's too.
Marilee, I have this same situation with my grandfather in the 1910 census in WA state. He's 17 and listed with his parents...then shows up as a lodger at a logging camp. I'm sure they're both him. I think it compares to having a child away at college...They live there during the week and come home on most weekends. Loretta
In the 1850 census records I have noticed where a young man is listed with his parents. Then there could be another young man with the same name and the same age listed with a different family, only the 2nd one is listed as a laborer. Could they be the same person, only living at home but working for someone else? Has anyone ever come across this in their research besides me? Hi all... I'm still trying to get back into the swing of things after my mother's death in March and dealing with depression. I did go to Kentucky for about two weeks and learned a lot of things...I met relatives for the first time that had contacted me after finding my genealogy site. I am the gg granddaughter of Nellie Hale Calhoun...her parents being James Hale and Jane Sanders. Right now I'm searching for HALE, CALHOUN, SPARKS, BAYES, SALYERS, BURTON, SHEPHERD, HOWARD and HAMILTON descendants around Floyd, Johnson, Magoffin, Lawrence, Martin, Pike and Carter Counties. My website is located at: http://members.aol.com/aslaton300/index.htm I have new updated information I have not added to my site as of this date. I'm still recovering from the long drive to and from Kentucky back home to Texas! I did have help! My two young children are "miniature genealogists" and are as involved in the family history as I am. Happy Hunting to all... Sherri Hale
Hi List! I am all for chat to resume on Tuesday nights. I am still on the hunt for: Burchett, Cantrell, Fyffe, Hamilton, Hill, Keeton, Lemaster, Pennington and Terry. Deanna
Hello Michelle, I dont know how, but my grandfather alway said that we were related to the Johnson County Castles throu mamaw. If you have the following names in your database, would love to know more about. George & Sally Wilson Dixon adopted shortly after 2-1-1901 my grandmother, (Nora) Mae . She was the birth daughter of ? Childers (age 15) and Gustavus (GUs) Preston. Gus was the son on Hereford & Susan Preston. I have the Preston info. just cant find any on the Dixon's or the unknown Childers. Any information greatly appreciated Mary Adkins Pinion
Well, let's see...I still have not found any descendants of Dennis Smith who was born 1874, Johnson County, son of David Smith and Polly Holbrook. Does anyone out there have access to microfilmed obituaries for Johnson Co. and Morgan Co. from the 1930's? If so, I would love to hear from you. The new cemetery pages are great! Jo
So someone talk about a non genealogy or non historical article. That will stir up some good conversations. Bud
I'm still here and watching for something. I think a lot of people are out travelling. Wish I were again. I read on another list that quite a few ladies down around Irvine are really busy with gardens and canning. So I suppose that goes for many areas. Keep watching. Bud
