Dear friends, I had to share with you the letter below on my Litton family. A large portion of my wall is finally coming down! Perhaps some of you can also benefit from these findings. Semper Fi, Mary Hello Mary Ann, . I will compile the data off line and send as an attachment. I can tell you this much now, You descended from Caleb Letton[Litton] b. 1678 in Ottery St. Marys, Devon Co. England He came to Maryland in 1700 as a soldier in the British Army and served 20 years, He received a warrant for 400 acres of land in Prince George County in 1722 [now Montgomery County Md.[Rockville] and married Grace Burton, in 1723. One of his sons came to Betourt Co. Va.[Staunton] in 1745 and married Sarah Ann Wilcoxen They are both buried in Russell Co. Va. They had 15 children, one of which was James Harvey Litton Sr b. 1789 Russell Co. Va. and married 3 times, he had 13 children total. You descend from the 3rd marriage of James to Mary Elizabeth Wilson. He had a saddle shop and livery[Harness] in the town of Lebanon, VA and sold it in 1842 and move his business to Pike Co. Kty They had 3 children, two boys and one girl. John Thomas Litton Elizabeth Litton Augustavis[Gus] William Litton Gus married a Taylor and produced several children, of which a son, James, produced your Ethel Litton, This is all for now, as I am doing this from memory and do not have the data base in front of me. The James you mentioned was a son of Gus Litton, etc. Gus died in the West Va. State Hospital for the elderly. I will try not to keep you waiting too long, have patients(sic) Canie Burns Litton Jr
Ann and Darrell, I do agree! Impressive is not even the word. Ann has already a fabulous homepage and makes the Historical Society page better than any other out there and Darrell with all of those resourceful and important obits and cemetery information, you would think you guys would hook up as County Coordinator and Assistant Coordinator for Johnson County on a site somewhere. I know of a site, <A HREF="http://www.genexchange.com/state.cfm?state=ky">KYGe nExchange</A> , that is in need of some CC's <subtle hint>! I will go searching through my obits and send them in if I have any Johnson County ones. I think most of mine are of Morgan County and are buried there. I'll be on the look out. Keep up the good work guys! If nothing else, you are inspiring! Deanna Levito
Ann you are doing a great job on the cemetery photo albums. When will we get to see the obituary album? I noticed you have quite a few obituaries in the album but I was unable to look at them. I would like to challenge everyone to send a least one obituary to Ann or Darrell to be posted on the Johnson County. I have already sent several to Darrell and have a couple more to send in the next couple of days. Come on folks lets keep Ann and Darrell busy building us a great Johnson County web site.
Hi Bud, I'm so glad everyones prayers are being heard and things are calming down. It's truly a shame that so much was lost although it could have been much worse, as we all know. Frank Battles is my second cousin on my Mothers side of the family. Her maiden name was Howell and so was Franks Mother. His wife's name is Ivy and I understand she has an antique shop called Ivy's Eporium or Antique Eporium. I don't really know them myself, in fact I just recently found out they were researching the Howells and I called them. They weren't at home and I left a messege saying I would call back soon. Haven't gotten to it yet though. That would be neat if you knew them. My Uncle Bill Howell in Yukon told me about their research. My Mother and family were born in McAlester area. Well, I hope everything stays calm and all fires go out. My prayers will continue. Sincerely, Gail Pierce
Julie: Thanks so much for the prayers. They are working. The fires here in my area were contained about midnight last night without coming on into town. There have been a few hot spot flare ups today but not nearly as serious as yesterday. Eighteen homes were destroyed just on the outside of town. Fires across the state have destroyed at least 80 homes according to tonights news. A few blazes are still very bad. One in the Arbuckle Mountains in south central Oklahoma has burned more than 3000 acres and several homes there. God has protected life and limb though and no one in the state so far has been seriously hurt. Thanks again, so very much, for the prayers. Bud Caudle in Guthrie, Oklahoma
Gail: Who is your second cousin in Guthrie. It's possible that I might know them. Don't know a lot of people here, but who knows. It is a small world. Thanks so much for the prayers. Chris, I think the cemetery you are describing is the Preston Cemetery and that is off KY1107. We were talking about the Welch Cemetery off KY 1145 Which is past the tracks, after the Wheeler Cem but before the Paintsville Golf Course. Your idea to call the Preston Funeral Home is a fantastic one, as perhaps they can make the connection to our Preston in the Welch cemetery. Thanks for the advice and hint!!! If you are interested in that particular cemetary and want to find out some good information on the Prestons buried there...., contact Preston Funeral Home in Paintsville. Last year when I was in Paintsville, I was having trouble finding the cemetary and called the funeral home for directions. The Preston that I talked to not only knew where the cemetary was, but said that his family was buried in that cemetary. You can not see the cemetary from the road. You have to enter through a gate just after you pass the railroad tracks, and go up and around the hill to find it. Anyway, he was very helpful, and more important, willing to share information. Dear Bud, Our prayers are with you and all the people of Oklahoma! Put your faith in HIM and He will see you through this time! :) Julie Van Hoose Hussain
Bud, I'm so sorry to hear about the fires out in Ok. I just had surgery yesterday and hadn't been online. I have lots of family out in OK and some friends also. As a matter of fact, I just recently discovered I have a second cousin right there in Guthrie! My prayers are with all of you. I hope by now things have gotten under control but I'll keep you in my prayers anyway. Gail Pierce
Hi gang, Just posted a new family on the website. The Decendants of Henry DeJeanne(Jayne) at : http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~regen I have had a number of people tell me that they cannot view my website because they are using Netscape as their internet viewer. The problem is caused because Netscape doesn't recognize the text codeing that I used for Internet Explorer. Please bear with me as I am looking for a way to correct this. Thanks for being patient. Thelma is located off state route 40. From Paintsville toward Inez the first left past the golf course with the Big Sandy River on your left all the way into Thelma. Ron Hall
Tom, I am not sure as I am just a Michigander and had my first, but not last visit to KY last year. If I am right I think it is right outside Paintsville. On the little cemetery map I have I show a Welch cemetery off 1145 . past the railroad tracks. Mary Welch Kazee lives on the old Welch Farm. I have that as 1716 Ky Rte 1145. It is before the Wheeler Cemetery and Paintsville golf course. Does that help at all? Thanks Ron and Mary for replying. I was born in Martin County, but left there in 1954. I used to drive from Inez to Paintsville every day while attending Mayo Vocational. But , had Thelma confused with Offutt. The George's Creek where my Preston and Borders ancestors lived was on down the river in Lawrence County. Mary, I have not figured out the connection between my L.P.A. Preston and the one buried at Thelma. He most likely is in my data by just one of his three names. Any clues from anyone would be most welcome. Thanks to all. Hello Mary, I am interested in your finding some one named L.P.A. Preston buried at Thelma, Ky. Just where is Thelma, KY in relation to George's Creek? My grand mother Maggie Ellen Preston Justice's father was named Lewis Patrick Allen Preston. He was born 19 Feb 1845 and died 8 Dec 1904 and is buried at Milo, KY in the Preston Family cemetery . He was born on George's Creek in Lawrence County. From looking at my family tree documentation, he was a son of John Preston b. abt 1813 on Georges Creek and Elizabeth Fitzpatrick. And, John was a son of Issac Preston b. about 1784 in Bedford County, VA and Mary Sloan who were married in Floyd County, KY 1 Feb 1812. I am sure there is a connection between the two L.P.A. Prestons. Most likely an uncle to my great grandfather. ( I am not too sure that the A. did stand for Allen, it may have stood for Arthur) He always signed everything L.P.A. Preston. And, he had uncles named Lewis, Patrick and Arthur. I would be most interested if anyone can shed some light here. Best Regards. Mary: Thanks so much for the prayers. As far as I could tell from tonight's news, prayers are being answered quickly. Most have been contained. Here at Guthrie, the firefighters will be out all night working on hotspots and flareups. they're expecting the same tomorrow. 18 homes just to the south edge of our town of Guthrie were destroyed. Still waiting to hear from some of our friends who lived in that area. Thanks again. Bud
