    1. [KYJESSAM] Jessamine Co., KY
    2. Hi All, Their must be something in the water here. We talked the other day about the Kentucky River, and how important is was to the early settler. We pointed out that the mouth of Hickman Creek, here in Jessamine County, became the center port along the river. I would like to tell you about more about the Kentucky River. We call it, "our best kept secret." Jessamine County is bordered to it's south by 42 miles of the Kentucky River. It is one of the most beautiful place you could lay eyes on. The river over the centuries has cut a deep 300 foot gorge through solate limestone. We call them the Palisades. It was along these river banks that some of you ancestors lived, and worked. All the little towns, warehouse, ferries, boatyards, and shipping ports are all gone now. Nature has reclaimed what belong to her, as offend happens when the hand of man is not present. With the exceptions of a few small settlement where to roads cross the river, it is as wild and untamed today, as it was when old Boone was in here. I would say that over 80% is uninhabited. It is now more or less a refuge for wild life. I remember on one of our river trips last year, I counted 16 Blue Hairing, 7 Turkey, and 1 old fish hawk. A few years ago the Judge Cassity, and Jessamine County Court, appointed a small group of people to take a closed look at the Kentucky River, and report back to them their finding, and recommendations. This is how the Jessamine County, Kentucky River Task Force was born. It was while serving with these folk that I come to the conclusion, "Their must be something in the water here." They came up with some of the doggonest ideas. I think it was George Dean, that first suggested that we find all the early land marks along our section of the Kentucky River, and mark them. Then it was suggested we take 1/4 inch steel plat, and cut out signs, in to shape of each county where the site was located. Then it was suggested we make a map and river guide to show and tell about each site. Now, that was a hold lot of suggestions, about a river we really knew little about, and looked like a lot of work to me. How would you ever find those location, and any history about them? Well to make a long story short, they did find them, and did what they set out to do. So the next time you come to Jessamine, bring your boat or canoe, and take yourself a tour of the Kentucky River, and take home some memories will last you the rest of your life. I may get shot for doing this, but I tell you what I am going to do. If you send me a #10 self address envelope, with two 34 cent stamps, I will send you one of the river guides. This little book has a map showing the location of the sites. It has historical information, and pictures that you will not find in print anywhere. Consider this a gift for Jessamine County, to you. I don't have a lot of these guides, so first come, first serve. I will to you when I run out. Clyde Bunch 211 Village Cir.
