I agree with you 100 %, Jim. I have seen many free on line services turned into pay services in the eight years I've been researching my family history. Judith Martin
I was passing along what was posted on a USGenWeb mail list. Please take what you hear and read with a grain of salt including what I have to say on this subject. Rootsweb is a free service no question. Always has been . Before My family/Ancestry came along rootsweb was supported by donations I would imagine that at some point the donations were not enough to cover the ever rising costs to maintain the free service at rootsweb so another way was found to support this free service My Family/Ancestry. My family inc. is in business to make money and to turn a profit and when the profit margin starts to decrease they have to find a way to generate more revenue. The way they do this is thru their customer base via a subscription service. Just take kentucky alone it has more than 100 mail lists more that 100 websites more than 100 message boards that take up valuable server space. Servers bandwith etc. are expensive to purchase and to maintain. My family has to continue to find ways to generate more revenue in order to continue to support rootsweb. This is my analogy and my analogy only but don't be surprised if someday you try to access family trees and can't do so without buying a subscription. By the way OWT is a subscription service as part of the preview service they are offering 14 months for the price of twelve. Thanks, Jim
Hi, Beth, Yes. Go to www.familysearch.org . Click on the tab that says Search, near the top of the page. On the next page that comes up, you will see a list of resources on the left hand side. Click on Pedigree Resource File. A form with blanks will come up, where you fill in info about one of your ancestors. Strangely enough, I find that I have better results if I don't fill in too much stuff. Near the bottom of the page, click Search or Find. I forget which. They are bound to have one or more of your ancestors. If not, try one of their siblings. This is the index. There is quite a bit of info in the index. But to get more, see the disc. Among the results, it will tell you the disc number. I hope you find something good and/or make some good connections. Jean
Do you have a url for this resource? Pedigree Resource File is like a new Ancestral File. In some ways, there are improvements. Ancestral File has been around so long that some of the submitters have died or moved away. Ped Resource File is new enough that the submitters are likely to be reachable. While Ancestral File combined information (that is, if 6 different people submitted the same family group, they were all combined), Ped Resource File keeps each person's submissions separate. There are some advantages to this. The index is free on the internet and contains lots of information. If you want family groups, though, you have to look at a disc. If you don't want to go to the library to see the disc, you can buy one for $1. I've made a couple of good contacts since recently starting to use this data base just a couple of weeks ago. > > Jean >

Jim, We are so fortunate to have you. I have just been visiting our Jessamine County web site. I hadn't visited there for quite some time, but now I shall remember to go back frequently. Thank you for the work you have done. It looks good! When I first arrived at the home page, the purple "street signs" were too purple to read, which was frustrating. It was after I clicked on one of them (not knowing what it would be) that the color lightened and made them readable. I don't mean that in a critical way. You have done a beautiful job. Just something to think about correcting when you have time. Jean PS I don't know whether this e-note I wrote has already gone out or not. I found it in my drafts folder.

Anna, Thank you so much for the link. The same day I received your email I received a reply to my question to Ancestry. I am very happy to know my information I upload onto Ancestry will still be available, without a fee, to other researchers and future cousins I should meet through Ancestry and Rootsweb. The following is the reply I received to my email question on whether my information would be available without paying the additional fee to One World Tree. Greetings List Members, I contacted Andrew Billinghurst of RootsWeb.com about the new Ancestry.com service, and he sent me the following URL: http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/owt.html It covers most any question concerning the new service. Researchers, I have sent a email question to Ancestry's email support asking if the One World Tree service is replacing the Ancestry World Tree currently available. Ancestry's FAQ section did not offer a clear answer to this question. I am hoping the OWT will only be an expanded service and not eliminate AWT and/or WorldConnect on Rootsweb and its free access. Will let you know the response from Ancestry. If you submitted a family tree to Ancestry.com (or MyFamily.com) for free viewing by researchers, that's all about to change. Later this month Ancestry plans to begin charging researchers to view your trees. If you don't want that, you'll have to remove your tree. Go to: http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/trees/owt/

Hi Researchers, Just wanted to let you folks know about a fundraiser the Woodford County Historical Society is having Saturday, May 22nd at the Versailles Cemetery. The time if 6:00pm to 9:00pm. It is called "Dinner With The Dead." If that doesn't get you attention noting will! We will begin with a nice box lunch type dinner. After that you will have a guided walking tour through the cemetery with histories of many of the families buried there. Along the way you will meet some of the permanent residents of the cemetery who will be dressed in period costume and tell you about their lives. This will require a good bit of walking. Believe me I know, as I have walked it about a thousand times. The price of the dinner tickets are $18.00 each, and tickets much be purchased ahead of time, so we will know have many to expect for dinner. Hope you can make it. We will also have for sell the newest version of our published "Versailles Cemetery" book. This was published in 2002 and has information from all of the stones as well as the cemetery records for those who do not have stones. I found a John Heils (with a S) married Aug 31 1837 to Anjellgan Lid bondsman was John R. Cleary Not familar with either of those names. If the Gerbit family was German you might try Gilbert or Gibbs. There was Gibbs family in Jessamine. --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Win a $20,000 Career Makeover at Yahoo! HotJobs
