Shane's Interview with Benjamin Allen And the next season afterwards [1791] my brother....worked two months for a cow with John Baker (that was, clearing at Winchester [Clark Co., KY] for Baker). (This was in 1791. We leased ground [spring, 1791], cleared it for the use of it for seven years, and planted corn and laid it by before my brother went to work for Baker. Next season [1792] I moved there [to John Baker's, now Winchester]....) [Baker] Had loaned us one [cow] before we bought it. In the first settling of Winchester this John Baker had a little half-faced camp of red-oak logs down where Lingingfelter's house is now.... his family in one end and a barrel of whiskey in the other.... Baker put his camp there in the winter 1792-93. Colonel [Joshua] Baker knew me. His aunt Bile [Boyle] was in our settlement-Stephen Bile's wife. I stayed with him three days. He was living in Mason then. John Baker, Lord Mayor of Winchester that was, bought a tract of land ....on the head of Somerset [Creek] of Simon Kenton. [Baker] Had been living down in Jessamine [County]. Married an Aga Williams of Jessamine, (my father and mother were at his first wedding in Virginia, Berkeley County: a second wife. Welch [was his] first wife; Combs his third), and took a notion to move up. (Clark Co.) Isaac Baker was a younger brother of John. Isaac was wounded in 1790. In the spring 1790 they settled Baker's Station. They also had a brother Joshua of Mason Co. After June 1790 Baker and his family went to Stephen Bile's whose wife was his aunt. Stephen Bile's wife's maiden name was Martha Campbell. Notes by Mr. Beckner: Col. Joshua Baker and his brothers, John and Isaac, were sons of Joshua Baker of Baker's Bottom on the Monongahela. Col. Baker was one of the most daring, skillful and useful of the partisan leaders on the Kentucky frontier. The Baker brothers were born near Winchester, Frederick Co., VA. John named the town of Winchester, [Clark Co.] KY for his native place. John Baker came to Kentucky in 1776 and located his preemption in Nelson Co. He must have sold this, for he came back from the Revolution and located in Jessamine Co., from whence he moved to Clark, where he d in 1803, leaving two sets of children: Joshua, John, Miriam and Elizabeth by his first wife, and Isaac Shelby, Cuthbert Bullit, Cythe and Nancy by his third. Clark Co. WB 1:302. Isaac Baker d unmarried in Feb/Mar 1793, Clark Co. WB 1:1. (Lucien Beckner, "John D. Shane's Interview with Benjamin Allen, Clark County," The Filson Club History Quarterly, V:5 (1931) pp. 63-98.)

Clyde I have really enjoyed your postings. You mentioned your Baker family so I thought I would send some Jessamine Co., KY references for Bakers. Clyde I am familiar with your Baker family. I am sure you know they had a large presence in Kentucky. You will also find descendants in Logan,Christian and Trigg Cos., KY. With their wonderful reputation as gunmakers & blacksmiths I tried to work out a relationship with my Bakers but was not successful. My ancestor, Benjamin Martin [Jr], of Orange Co., VA married Sarah Baker, dau. of Bartholomew, and they migrated to Lincoln Co. Kentucky by Nov 1786, when Benjamin's dau., Lucy, m John McClure. Sarah Baker Martin d 3 Apr 1811, Benjamin Martin died 1821 (Jessamine Co., KY WB C:146). It is assumed that they were buried on their home place. Benjamin owned 195 acres of 3rd rate land on Jessamine Cr. entered by Jos. McMurtry. (1799 Jessamine Co. tax list.) There were other Martins and Bakers in Jessamine Co. but their connections to my family are unknown. Baker references in Jessamine County, Kentucky. Morning All, Jean, that Bryce is on the ball. It looks like he answered your question. Terry, I am pleased you jumped. Good to hear from you. I am looking forward to the day, that old Hoover (Moravian) Church cemetery can be cleaned. Their is no telling who all they will find in there, when they probe around. As, I told you all before, I think the folks here will keep going as long as you all show interest. I wish their was someway you could meet Ernestine Hamm. She is the hardest working woman I have ever met. She works at cleaning these cemeteries most every day. If she is not in a cemetery, she is in the courthouse, doing research. She is the one doing most of the research, to get these new headstones. I feel sorry for her husband Charlie, ever day he is off work, she has him out there in a cemetery with her. Ernestine don't have a computer, or I would give you e-mail address. I think is would please her to no end if you were to write her. Please take a moment and drop her a line. She has worked very hard this year. Her address is: Ernestine Hamm, 321 Royaity Dr., Nicholasville KY 40356 Or, you could give her a call some evening. Her phone number is: 1-859-885-6240 I know many of you are interested in what is happening here in Jessamine County, and want to help. You may wonder what you can do, living so far away. In fact, that is the very key. When, in the past you have wrote to the new papers, local officials, libraries, and such, it has had a great impact. When letter and e-mail starts coming in from all over the United States, it get people's attention. We made a good team. You keep showing an intrest, and we will keep up the home front. Hi, I haven't been on in awhile, but since Clyde brought me up..... That's great news about Conrad E's marker. Located daughter Elizabeth's marker [tumbled over and a bit worn] while hunting through the Hoover Cemetery in June. Guessed that Conrad and the Bowmans and Cawbys were near by, but couldn't find any of them in the vines and such that covered the burial sites. If anyone has any addition info on Conrad's bunch, such as who his daughter Catherine married, I'd love to hear about it. I have it that she may have married the elder John Cawby [father of John and Martin - who married Susanna Trisler], but the dates don't jell. Young Martin was born in 1777, too early for his mother to have been Conrad's daughter. I have Martin Cawby's years in Indiana fairly well documented if anyone is looking for info on his line. Hi Jean, You can post to the list, and I'll catch it. If your contact is by e-mail only, that is plenty safe. If you are going to include other information, like a mailing address or phone number, it is probably wiser to send it to me privately. Your mailing address and phone would be on the printed list, available at the Jessamine County Historical Society. As far as anyone asking for researcher information through me, since I'm receiving all the information via e-mail, that is the only "address" I will share, even if I do have other means of contact. Cordially, Bryce Stevens [email protected] : You have probably said this before. So I'm sorry to bother you : again. : To get on Bryce's list, just what information do I send and to : where? To this list? To a mail address? : Thank you. : Jean

To elaborate a bit more on the Earthenhouse connection in Jessamine County, I offer the following from the History of Jessamine County, submitted by Kenneth Lee Houp. The is but a small portion of the article: "Robert Bowman was the son of Joseph Bowman, who was killed by the Indians on a return trip to Maryland, and Elizabeth Earthenhouse (1781-1885), who died at age 104. Elizabeth's father was Conrad Earthenhouse (1755-1843), a German mercenary (Hessian) who came to the U.S. in 1776 to fight for the British. Conrad deserted the British forces in 1779 and joined the American Revolution in Hanover County, Virginia in 1780 serving in Virginia, the Carolinas and New Jersey. In 1801, he emigrated to Jessamine County along with other German settlers on Jessamine Creek and operated several mills. He is buried in the Hoover Graveyard (on Shun Road) along with his son, John, his grandson, John, and his daughter, Elizabeth, and graddaughter, Elizabeth Cawby" Hope this helps, Shelia

Hi All, Their must be something in the water here. We talked the other day about the Kentucky River, and how important is was to the early settler. We pointed out that the mouth of Hickman Creek, here in Jessamine County, became the center port along the river. I would like to tell you about more about the Kentucky River. We call it, "our best kept secret." Jessamine County is bordered to it's south by 42 miles of the Kentucky River. It is one of the most beautiful place you could lay eyes on. The river over the centuries has cut a deep 300 foot gorge through solate limestone. We call them the Palisades. It was along these river banks that some of you ancestors lived, and worked. All the little towns, warehouse, ferries, boatyards, and shipping ports are all gone now. Nature has reclaimed what belong to her, as offend happens when the hand of man is not present. With the exceptions of a few small settlement where to roads cross the river, it is as wild and untamed today, as it was when old Boone was in here. I would say that over 80% is uninhabited. It is now more or less a refuge for wild life. I remember on one of our river trips last year, I counted 16 Blue Hairing, 7 Turkey, and 1 old fish hawk. A few years ago the Judge Cassity, and Jessamine County Court, appointed a small group of people to take a closed look at the Kentucky River, and report back to them their finding, and recommendations. This is how the Jessamine County, Kentucky River Task Force was born. It was while serving with these folk that I come to the conclusion, "Their must be something in the water here." They came up with some of the doggonest ideas. I think it was George Dean, that first suggested that we find all the early land marks along our section of the Kentucky River, and mark them. Then it was suggested we take 1/4 inch steel plat, and cut out signs, in to shape of each county where the site was located. Then it was suggested we make a map and river guide to show and tell about each site. Now, that was a hold lot of suggestions, about a river we really knew little about, and looked like a lot of work to me. How would you ever find those location, and any history about them? Well to make a long story short, they did find them, and did what they set out to do. So the next time you come to Jessamine, bring your boat or canoe, and take yourself a tour of the Kentucky River, and take home some memories will last you the rest of your life. I may get shot for doing this, but I tell you what I am going to do. If you send me a #10 self address envelope, with two 34 cent stamps, I will send you one of the river guides. This little book has a map showing the location of the sites. It has historical information, and pictures that you will not find in print anywhere. Consider this a gift for Jessamine County, to you. I don't have a lot of these guides, so first come, first serve. I will to you when I run out. Clyde Bunch 211 Village Cir.
