Marlene and Ken Clark are my stepsister and brother. I knew Chad Spurlock pretty well, he was Marlow's cousin. And, of course the Bonhams were Marlow's sister and brother in law. See your middle name is Gilbert, was this your maiden name? Gilbert is also familiar too me from the Fairplay/Alma area. I think Marlene, who I copy with this, has a Clark genealogy. I also copy my sister Sue Phillips and daughter Shannon Parker to enlist their aid. We were from Fairplay and Alma. All of the names in your query are familiar. I think it is a very long shot that we (i.e. your husband and I) have common ancestors. I actually found someone yesterday on a message board that has a gr grandmother with exactly the same name as mine and his gr grandfather (her husband) has the same surname but with a different forename as mine. I sent him an email but have not had a response as yet. I have a good feeling that he and I are related (he is also Australian) and I am hopeful that he can give me a few more pieces of the puzzle. This family history research is fascinating isn't it and quite addictive. It is extremely hot here in Rockhampton Queensland, Saturday was 40 degrees Celcius and today is only marginally cooler. Oh to be in the Northern Hemisphere's winter!!! My daughter and her husband live in Prague and will be Christmassing in Canada. I am very envious. Thanks again for your resonse. Dallas

The Ricketts connection is that Steve's Grandfather Earle Benjamin Poole's Grandmother on his mother's side was a Ricketts - Laura Virginia Ricketts of Marchant and Maria Ricketts of Derwood Maryland. The Poole's came to the US in the 1600's (don't have an absolute date yet). Richard was "exiled" or ??? Will pull my records after the Christmas holidays and will respond with the sketchy details I can share. Would not say I see an immediate connection - (but!!!) I would not rule it out either! We have been amazed at the distance people moved with such old technology! We will you and yours a wonderful holiday season. Is your weather warm and sunny? I shouldn't complain - I just hate winter. Thought I might enjoy US summer and Australia summer - not bad - 12 months of summer! Wow!! When I have made my millions! I shouldn't hold my breath! My maiden name was Poole-Ricketts. I am trying to trace my ancestors and have hit a blank wall. All I know is that my grandfather was Ralph George Ricketts (possibly Poole-Ricketts). My father always used Poole-Ricketts for his surname. According to his marriage certificate, my grandfather was born in Bristol England and his father was George Poole Ricketts and his mother was Catherine Frances Baker. But I can find no record of him anywhere before he came to Australia. He was married in Sydney NSW in 1912. Born around 1886/1887. Where does the Ricketts fit into your family? I have searched the internet resources for family history for over a month and cannot find anything relating to him. So the family story goes, some ancestor had a proviso in his will which stated that on his death if his wife wanted to remarry, she had to carry his surname on. But I don't know if he was a Poole or a Rickett! s. Hope you can help. Cheers, Dallas

Surnames: Alcorn Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ABB.2ACE/3209.2 Message Board Post: This may be a bit of good info for you. Just select and copy. ROBERT ALCORN was born between 1765 and 1775, son of John Alcorn and Jane Breckenridge. Lloyd C. Alcorn lists him as born in 1771. He married Susannah Turpin Welch on 25 May, 1796, in Madison County, Kentucky. The clerk made a mistake when he wrote out the bond. He wrote: John and Susannah rather than Robert and Susannah. John Alcorn, father of Robert, signed the marriage bond. That this was a mistake can be later validated by census records which show Robert and Susannah as husband and wife in the census records of Madison, Fayette, and Gallatin counties of Kentucky. Susannah Turpin was born in 1777 in North Carolina. She first married Thomas Welch on 9 January, 1794, in Madison County, Kentucky. Thomas apparently lived only about a year after the marriage. Thomas and Susannah are thought to have had one daughter prior to Thomas' death. In November, 1796, Robert and Susannah sold 35 acres to Stephen Eastin in Madison County, Kentucky. This was land that Susannah inherited when her first husband, Thomas Welch, died. Robert is recorded on the 1809,1810,1811, and 1814 tax lists for Fayette County. He is recorded on the 1820 census and tax list and the 1830 census as living in Gallatin County., Kentucky. Robert and Susannah had ele! ven other children. Robert died between 1825 and 1830 in Gallatin County, Kentucky. Susannah appears on the 1830 census of Gallatin County, Kentucky, age between 50 and 60; and also on the 1850 census of .i.Kentucky:Gallatin County;Gallatin County, Kentucky, age 73, born in North Carolina. She was living with Mary Holbart at the time. Their children are: 1. Lucy Alcorn 2. Rebecca Alcorn 3. Elizabeth Alcorn 4. John Alcorn 5. Sallie Alcorn 6. A daughter 7. Jesse Alcorn 8. A daughter 9. Robert Alcorn 10. Mary Ann Alcorn 11. Alice Alcorn 12. William Alcorn 1. Lucy Alcorn was born prior to 1795. She is probably the daughter of Thomas and Susannah Welch. She apparently took the name Alcorn. Robert signed permission for Lucy to marry Moses Hicks on 16 April, 1811, in Fayette County, Kentucky. Robert provided surety. Moses Hicks is listed on the 1814 and 1817 Fayette County, Kentucky, tax lists. 2. Rebecca Alcorn was born between 1796 and 1800. She married William Hicks on 10 January, 1815, in Fayette County, Kentucky. 3. Elizabeth Alcorn was born between 1796 and 1800. She married Thomas Darbro on 17 August, 1825, in Gallatin County, Kentucky. After the Death of Elizabeth, Thomas married Alice (Alecy) Alcorn, sister to Elizabeth. 4. John Alcorn was born about 1799 to 1802 in Kentucky, son of Robert Alcorn and Susannah (Turpin) Welch. The name of this first wife is unknown. He married second, Nancy McPherson on 24 February, 1838, in Gallatin County, Kentucky. Her parents were Robert and Janet McPherson. He married, third, Elizabeth "Betsy" (Hicks) Barnett on 14 November, 1846, in Jessamine County, Kentucky. Elizabeth was born about 1820 in Kentucky. She was first married to William Barnett on 15 April, 1842, in Jessamine County, Kentucky. This marriage bond was signed by William Barnett and John Hicks. John Hicks was the father of Elizabeth. Her brother was William Hicks, who married Rebecca Alcorn. Elizabeth had two children by William Barnett: John Barnett and William Barnett, Jr.. John first appears on the Jessamine County tax list for 1831. Apparently he did not own land but farmed land for thers in Jessamine and Garrard Counties. John is listed on Garrard County tax lists from 1846 t! o 1872. Jessamine County Clerk records show that John was fined twice for "selling spiritous liquors without a license." He may have owned a tavern. On the 1850 Jessamine County census, John's age is listed as 49 and his occupation is a farmer. His wife is Elizabeth "Betsy", age 30. Besides John's children, John Barnett and William Barnett, both listed as age 7, were living with them. John Alcorn died in October, 1877, in Jessamine County, Kentucky. He was living with his granddaughter, Mary Elizabeth Alcorn Majors at the time of his death in 1877. He is buried at Buena Vista in Garrard County. John had the following children: i. The 1870 Bryantsville township, district 4, Garrard County census lists Robert's age as 41, a common laborer. Mary Ann's age as 33. Five of their children are listed as well as James Grimes, age 22, and Susan Grimes, age 18. Susan Grimes is a sister of Robert Grimes. Enumeration was on 12 July, 1870. In 1880, they were living in Pulaski County, Kentucky. Robert is age 50, Mary Ann is age 43. Five of their children are still living with them. Their children from the 1860 to 1880 census records are: a. James T. (or F.) Alcorn. He is listed as age 4 on the 1860 Owen County, Kentucky census and as age 14 on the 1870 Garrard County census and 24 on the 1880 Pulaski County census. b. Margaret Alcorn. He is listed as 3 months old on the 1870 Garrard County census and 10 on the 1880 Pulaski County census. ii. James Alcorn was born in February 1832 in Jessamine County, Kentucky. His mother was John's fist wife. In 1850, James was living in Jessamine County with John C. Welch. He was 16 years old. John C. Welch is probably related to Susannah, James' grandmother. James also is listed on the 1850 Jessamine County census with his father, John, and again is listed as age 16. James married Sarah Hicks on 21 (or 24) December, 1852, in Jessamine County, Kentucky. Sarah was born in 1828 in Kentucky, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Preston Hicks. The 1860 Nicholasville township, Jessamine County census lists James as age 27 and Sarah as 25. John is a farmer.
