How about e-mailing the Filson Club in Louisville? They would have a file on the merchants in the area. I looked at "The Encyclopedia of Louisville" under the names and also Department Stores, and the closest I could come was Bacon's which was founded in 1845 at Fourth and Market Sts. and stayed downtown until 1998.
