The reason why the Northwest Territories has the township system of descriptions is because of the problems with legal title from KY military warrants. It was a nightmare. Kentucky uses the same metes and bounds system that Virginia uses because they were part of Virginia at the time the land was originally surveyed. The practice referring to things that are no longer there seems to come quite naturally to Kentuckians. One of the first things that newcomers to the east end of Louisville learn is the location of "where the old Sears used to be" on Shelbyville Road. The Sears hasn't been there for 20 years, but the building is an important navigational landmark for area residents.
