Henry Kaufman, a local retail clerk, was its founder. In 1883 Benjamin Straus joined him as a partner. In 1887 the two men moved their business to S. Fourth St., leasing space from the Polytechnic Society of Kentucky (predecessor of the Louisville Free Public Library). In 1903 a new Kaufman-Strauss building designed by Louisville architect Mason Maury was completed at 533-49 S. Fourth St. The LFPL continued to occupy space in the store until 1908. In 1925, after extensive interior renovation, the concern was touted in its grand reopening as Louisville's newest department store. Today, the exterior facade of the 1903 building may be viewed as part of the eastern wall of the Galleria shopping complex.
