In regards to your Gustave vs August, I'll tell you what I have found in my family research. So very many times I'll find somebody listed as one name in this census and another name in the next census. These always turn out to be their middle name. A very knowledgable genealogist that used to work at our local library told me that that was a typical of Germans, to interchange first names & middle names. I think I have found it to be true even in Irish ancestors, also, or maybe it was just a regional thing in my area. I wonder if other researchers have found the same thing? But, my guess is that your relative's name was either Gustave August, or August Gustave. Diana
