Does anyone know if midwives had to have any kind of a license or certification in Kentucky in the 1800's? My ancestor, Elizabeth Leuba was listed in the Lexington City Directory in 1818 as a midwife and also in the Louisville City Directory (she moved there in 1840) under Physicians in the 1859/6 Directory.
