    3. Obit. Courier Journal August 26, 1913 pg 2 col 5 CAPT. JOHN STAIB DIES (My note: John spells his name Staab on all of his other records. I have checked his War record and it is Stab) Civil War Veteran and Former Fireman Passes Away. Capt. John G. Staib, 70 years old. Union veteran of the Civil War and retired fireman, died at his home at 320 East Broadway early yesterday morning of nephritis. He had been in declining health since St. Patrick's day, but was able to be up Sunday afternoon. Capt. Staib was a native of Louisville. At an early age he joined the volunteer fire department and served as a fireman until the outbreak of the war. At the close of the war Capt. Staib again identified himself with the firefighters of Louisville and was captain of several companies at different times. He was driver of No. 15 reel at the time of his retirement in 1910. He was a member of the Catholic Knights of America. Besides his wife, who was Miss Catherine Reid, Capt. Staib is survived by two sons. John Staib, of Louisville, and Frank Staib of Indianapolis and two daughters, Mrs. William Shiphorst of Cleveland and Miss Elizabeth Staib of this city. Funeral services will be held at the residence at 8:30 o'clock tomorrow morning and at St. John's church at 9 o'clock. Burial will be at St. Louis cemetery. Notation: St. Louis cemetery records for this family spell his name as Staab. He , His wife Kate and child Elizabeth are all buried there. I wonder does the old fire departments have any pictures or records? His father was Johann (John) Staab born. abt 1802 died 1877 and his brother was Peter Staab. I am not sure that JohnG. and Peter had the same mother. Johann Staab the father of John G. and Peter had at least 12 children.
