Dear Listers, It needs stating that some of the kids in the orphanages were not orphans. One of my fellow 6th graders told me that his family simply could not take care of him. I suspect they were in financial straits, or worse, alcoholic straits. P.S.: while not an orphan, the very good writer Hunter S. Thompson died over the week end. He lived across the street from me near one of the orphanages on Bardstown Rd., on Bassett Ave in the 1940's.
