    2. Judy, I couldn't find Madel Landauer or Caroline Strauss in Cave Hill Cemetery's database. I looked in the 1840 census nationwide but couldn't find him. I went online to Ancestry.com and someone has placed him in a family tree. They gave his birth year as 1832 in Gerahronn, Wurttenberg, Germany, and date of death as 1859. They listed his parents as Hiram Hayum Landauer and Rebecca Baier Jandorf. Sorry I couldn't find more information. 1. Gerabronn, Germany & Landauers
    2. Judy Landauer
    3. Sherrie, That's OK. I thought it might help to have another pair of eyes. The database with Madel is my own from Rootsweb. I would be REALLY surprised (and thrilled) if it that family tree belonged to someone else! ; ) The small town of Gerabronn in Germany is the ancestral home of my husband's family. Most of them came over between 1853 and 1858 when there was a huge long drought in Wurtemburg and thousands fled to other parts of the world. So far I have found one cousin who is descended from Madel's sister, Jeanette, and one family that connects with the SOLOMON/SALOMON family who was also from Gerabronn that married into the Landauers. They were all Jewish, which can play hobb with their first names. For instance: Madel's father was named Hayum Landauer, but he went by the German first name of Heinrich when he did business in Germany (he was a Realtor). When he came to America, he changed it to Hirum, so it wouldn't sound so outlandish, but according to Jeanette's descendant his name was Henry, which is the English form of Heinrich . Likewise his wife, Baier Jandorff, used Becky, or Rebecca. When Jews changed their first names in America at this time, they generally kept the first initial the same, but changed the rest, so Madel could become Marx or Max. If someone didn't know what his original first name was, but knew him as "Mark" or "Marcus", then he could have been buried under a different first name. The last name stayed the same. So you can see why tracing Jewish families can be very challenging! Thank you for listening to my ramblings~ Good luck with your own research! Judy L.
