You are correct, Shippingport Island was an island in the middle of the Ohio in the Portland area. The island was partially flooded when they put a canal in between the island and Portland, then it seems like a utility company put some type of station at one end of the island and finally it was purchased by whoever is responsible for the McAlpine Lock and Dam. At that point it was completely flooded. I became familiar with many of the street names by checking the Caron's directory at the Louisville Library which will often indicate Shippingport with the address given. If you are not in the Louisville area send me the names of the family and time period and I'll check the Caron's listing next time I'm at the library. There is also a book called the Encyclopedia of Louisville which I'm sure you can find at the Library that has some additional info on Shippingport.
