Oh, Barbara, I forgot to mention there are some Geigers in South Jefferson / Bethany cemeteries. I have seen them when visiting graves of relatives. One who comes to mind is Consuela Fenley Geiger. ----- Original Message ----- From: Barbara Wisdom <jdwisdom@cox.net> Date: Sunday, August 27, 2006 10:43 Subject: Re: [KYJEFFER] New Listing for Jefferson County Cemeteries To: KYJEFFER-L@rootsweb.com > We are loooking for Reisinger, Branner/Brunner, Fulmer/Volmer, > Geiger, and > Hinkle. Southeastern Genealogy is the Kentucky site. I went thru google and put in www.segenealogy.com <http://www.segenealogy.com/> Hope you can access this. It gives an over look to a county's history and shows what records are where.
Hello I am looking for family connections for the following families Pittman, Lemon, Summers and langley. Any connection no matter how small could prove useful. I also have information to exchange if you are interested. Thank you for your time and attention. Ora N. Coons
This site gives a history of Jefferson Co., including a few of the very well known people who settled the area. You can also get any of the other counties in Kentucky. Dottie If it looks funny, it reads mykentucky/genealogy.com/ky_county/jef.htm. www.mykentucky/genealogy.com/ky_county/jef.htm

Yes Calvary is the oldest cemetery in San Diego and through the wonderful work of the Historical society I was able to trace my husband's ggggranfather who was an original settler in Old Town San Diego..kind of bitter sweet since the cemetery was distroyed for a park in the 70's...but because of that the Historical Society is a very ambitious group and has done wonderful work in putting names and histories to almost all the graves at Calvary. These were the Jewish cemeteries listed in the 1953-54 Louisville Directory: Congregation Brith Sholom Cemetery 2610 S. Preston Adath Israel Cemetery 2716 S. Preston Adath Jeshurun Cemetery 2926 S Preston Anchei Sfard Cemetery 719 Locust (off S. Preston adjacent to others above) Keneseth Israel 719 Locust (off S. Preston adjcacent to others above) Agudath Achim Cemetery 2739 S. Preston (across the street from those listed above) Jewish Schardein Cemetery 1622 Wathen Lane Adath of Sherum Cemetery 316 Woodbine (Those buried in these two cemeteries supposedly removed to the Preston St. cemeteries of Brith Sholom and Adath Israel now known as The Temple) My grandfather was the caretaker at Brith Sholom/Adath Israel and lived with his family in a stone house on cemetery property in the 1930s. When asked where he lived as a child growing up in Louisville, my father would reply "We lived in the cemetery." He shared tales of helping to dig graves and pruning the bell-shaped trees. Deborah
I have had some great assistance from Herman Meyer & Son funeral home. The following is from their website: www.meyerfuneral.com Louisville, Kentucky Genealogy Database Herman Meyer & Son has compiled an extensive database of most Jewish burials in Louisville since 1910. This is a free service we offer to those seeking information on their family. However, this database only contains information on burials which took place in Louisville, Kentucky. We will respond to all inquires as soon as we are able to process your request. Responses will be made through email. Please provide as much relevant information as you can on the person(s) you are inquiring about. Relevant information would be: their name, date of death or birth, parents names, the names of any siblings, their spouse or children. Gale, Don't know whether this web site will help you but it is one of the oldest cemeteries in San Diego: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=calvary Dori in CA ----- Original Message ----- From: <GaleBrisa@aol.com> To: <KYJEFFER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, August 28, 2006 2:11 PM Subject: Re: [KYJEFFER] Re: Eden Cemetery in Jefferson County Deborah, Thank you so much for that info. I am sure that is where my John Hall is buried, especially since his daughter was married to a Dorsey and there are Bowles, Winchesters, and Lawrence's very directly related. It is so very sad what has happen to these old cemeteries all over the U.S. Two weeks ago I discovered a huge connection on my husband's side of the family. I have been searching for over ten years. When, at last, I found out where his ggggrandfather was buried...only to discover that the city of San Diego in 1971 decided to bull doze the oldest cemetery in the city in order to provide a PARK! Now that's sad! At any rate the miracle was his ggggrandfather's and grandmother headstone were two of about forty of the four thousand saved. Hopefully I can at least visit the Eden Cemetery site and get some more info through the Filson Historical Society.. Donnie, The Jewish Cemetery that was on Wathen Lane has been moved it is now in with all the other Jewish Cemeteries on Preston Highway. Yes there is more than one Jewish Cemetery on Preston. If my memory serves me right there are four at the same general location and a fifth one across the street. Each cemetery is a different congregation, with one of the cemeteries being shared by two congregations. Baruch Hashem ~Alan
Is Adath Jeshurun and Adath Israel the same cemetery. I have a ggrandmother, Cora Sternberg, buried there and also her daughter, Bernise Roberts. Beverly
Here's what "The Encyclopedia of Louisville" has to say about Jewish cemeteries: (page 170) "The earliest record of a Jewish burial site was ADATH ISRAEL, known as Hebrew Cemetery, first described in 1859. It was located on the southwest corner of Preston and Woodbine. The cemetery was moved to its present location on Preston St. south of Eastern Parkway when Interstate 65 was constructed. At one time there was a Hebrew cemetery on the south side of Wathen Ln., west of Seventh Street Road, but about 1934 those buried there were moved to the cemetery on Preston. Each of the Jewish congregations - The Temple (a merger of Adath Israel and Brith Shalom), Adath Jeshurun, Keneseth Israel, Anshei Sfard, and Temple Shalom - has its own burial site. All but Temple Shalom own land on Preston St; Temple Shalom uses a consecrated site in Cave Hill Cemetery. Across Preston St. from the others is Agudath Achim Cemetery, which retains its name though the congregation merged with Adath Jeshurun." Hope this helps. I just learned something, maybe. It appears that Adath Jeshurun and Brith Shalom are both on Preston Street. Does anyone know if they simply share an address, or are they one in the same? I see there is also a Kneseth Israel Cemetery, but I need to search for even a small listing of this one. Regarding the previously mentioned unknown Jewish burials in No. 128, I see the author of Wilderness Road Cemeteries also included the very same cemetery in No. 143 of the book, but this time, he gave 24 additional listings. I'm glad I'm not the only one confused with all these cemeteries....hehe. Donnie -----Original Message----- From: Donald L. Hey Sharon, Forgive me for being slow, but I did find a partial listing of Long Run Cemetery in the "Wilderness Road Cemeteries of Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia" book by Robert Foster Johnson. I cannot answer as to who Benjamin Bridge's wife might have been, but I do have dates from his stone, if you don't already have them. This is the complete listing of what was in the book. Obviously, it is barely only a fifth of the total number of burials at the cemetery. This author truly did only list the oldest graves he found. The listing is in the exact order as he cataloged them. "Long Run Baptist Church in eastern Jefferson County, located 1 mile north of US 60 on Long Run Creek in churchyard, approximately 100 graves. The church and graveyard among the oldest in the state. First log church erected by Capt. Abraham Lincoln (1738-1786). It is said he is buried under the church. Gale wrote: <Does anyone know of the Eden Cemetery outside of Louisville and directions to it. I will be visiting Kentucky in two weeks and my hope is to locate this cemetery where my 6th gr grandfather, Rev John Hall is buried.> I'm pretty sure that Eden Cemetery is the Vale of Eden Cemetery, also known as the Lawrence Family Cemetery or Lawrence/Dorsey Family Cemetery. It is located on the Shelby Campus of the University of Louisville off Shelbyville Road and Whipps Mill Road. The stone fence which surrounds this cemetery can be seen from Whipps Mill Road. There is a chain link fence around the stone fence. The cemetery is in very poor condition. As of 1986 only eight graves could be distinguished, and only three of these were legible. The cemetery has been vandalized over the years and the several above ground box graves broken into and nearly destroyed. Many of the stones have disappeared completely. The Jefferson County USGenWeb site has listed some burials in this cemetery taken from "The Kentucky Genealogist" a quarterly publication edited by James Bentley, a former director of The Filson. Additional burials were mentioned in W. K. Frederick's "Some Churches and Cemeteries of Jefferson County" published in 1923. Another list available at The Filson was compiled in 1917. Surnames include: Lawrence, Harrison, Dorsey Fuqua, Winchester, Bowles, Thomas and O'Bannon An article about this cemetery and listings of known burials is in the quarterly publication of the Louisville Genealogical Society, "Lines-and-By-Lines" Volume 1, number 2, Summer 1986. The only Hall mentioned is Lycurgus Hall, 1823-1824. The lists and publications mentioned above can be found at The Filson Historical Society, 1310 S. Third Street, Louisville, and probably at other repositories as well. Hope this has been of some help, Deborah
