    2. Dottie Brentlinger
    3. Does anyone remember the Christmas Windows? My sister had her picture in the paper with her nose glued to the Christmas window. Stewarts and Kaufman's both had beautiful windows for Christmas. All of my family still talks about missing Bacon's dept store. Dottie

One of my great memories is leaving my grandmother's after Thanksgiving dinner with my mom, dad, brother and cousins to get in the car and go downtown to Fourth Street and look at the great Christmas decorations in Kaufmann's, Stewart's, etc. Jennefer -----Original Message----- From: kyjeffer-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:kyjeffer-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of JONESDOGS@aol.com Sent: Thursday, September 07, 2006 6:27 PM To: kyjeffer@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [KYJEFFER] Bread, Milk and Fruit & models Of course!!! 3. Kenny, Funny how in searching your family you hit a brick wall, but then something turns up. My grandparents, Clara and Charles Kendall lived on Payne St., which is exactly where you mentioned the photo was taken (N. of River Road near Frankfort.) I have one picture taken of the inside of the house at Christmas...no date...written on the back was "Dresser set given by Grace." Grace was my grandfather's sister, who married William Blankenbaker. Would love to have a copy of your picture and gladly pay for copying and postage. Sorry I can't help you with your Bisig family....the name is not familiar to me. Good luck in your search. Also, noticed there was a mention of Mrs. Kendall- I have a photo of residence which I suspect was located in eastern downtown Louisville (N of River Road and near Frankfort Ave), on the back of the pic, it reads Mrs. Kendall's residence. 2. Funny, but a couple of weeks ago, our Church was discussing about how Polio was started, and they said it was the indoor bathrooms, that caused it, is that correct? When Mom got lay-ed off from Reynolds Metal Co, we had to go on Welfare, and we go some of the flour (it wasn't like the flour you got in the store you had to sift it to get it lite enough) etc. ( the meat in the can was the best though!) that they had for that. Well I made a cake, and since the Watkins bottles were the same kind I used the cough syrup for the vamilla, and my Aunt said we would be good all winter, and not have colds since I had helped with the cough syrup ha ah. Well anyway the cake was good, but more like a cookie than a cake. -- Teddy List Mom for the Grayson Co Ky List, Brady, Vertrees, Ford, Fulkerson, and Commonwealth http://www.kygenweb.net/pd-res/deford.html

    3. This may not fit EXACTLY, but a friend of mine took his wife to the hospital here, they had the baby, then the next day he moved her to a hotel where she stayed for three days. She needed rest, not medical care, so the hotel was a LOT less expensive and the room service was better. Judy L. 3. Speaking of models....remember the models at Stewart's Dept. Store? In the spring, just as you entered through the revolving doors there was a big display area with a white picket fence and in the center was a gal dressed in lace, ruffles and ribbons swinging on a swing while live bunnies hopped around the grassy area and flowers...with birds in cages just chirping along. That's when we wore dresses, hose (not pantyhose) and white gloves to go downtown! ----- Original Message ----- From: JONESDOGS@aol.com<mailto:JONESDOGS@aol.com> To: kyjeffer@rootsweb.com<mailto:kyjeffer@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, September 06, 2006 9:22 PM Subject: Re: [KYJEFFER] Bread, Milk and Fruit O.K. I'll throw one in....Oralee's Cookie Jar Bakery on the corner of Stiltz and Frankfort Avenue. THEY had the best Charlotte Russe! Then there was the Canary Cottage in St. Matthews. It was the place to be on Friday's. It was a BIG deal if I was out of school and got to go to the Friday fashion show. They had Susie Q french fries, my favorite. I was quite awestruck at what lovely models wore. If I was lucky, my mother would take me to Dwight Thomas in St. Matthews to shop or Tweed and Tartan. I'd save my baby sitting money to buy a McMullen blo use or sweater with gross grain ribbon. Bauer's restaurant was the place to be on Tuesday's. They also had informal modeling from the local shops. 3. Dear Listers, I seem to recall hearing that it was the *lack *of indoor plumbing and flies that allowed the polio virus to be transmitted. That is, the flies would land on excrement, pick up the virus and would then land on food or someone's hands. But the information I had, from a doctor, was not scientifically tested. 2. The memories sure do come back. I guess some things are in our minds forever. My brother was a Donaldson man. Some where in West End. I lived at Schiller and Oak, at 1131 E. St Catherine, St. I left Louisville in 1951, courtesy of Korean War, Stayed in until 1972, and then went to Louisville for two years 1972-1974 and I lived in Shively, and worked at Courthouse, as a Personal Property Administrative assistant (Tax Collector) then went to Maryland then to Florida. ANYWAY I helped my brother on Saturdays, (1947-1950) working on the Donaldson Wagon. Our horse's name was Lee. and he surely was big. I don'tr remember the streets but I would take the bus from Schiller and Oak to I think to 22nd street. I met my brother in front of Shawanee High School. We wnt up and down many streets, into many houses. We used to feed the horse in front of a fire station, that had one of the old water troughs. Gosh what memories. In my East End we had a vegatable man Named Mr. Kipp. Very nice man. He had a son who was following in his footsteps. His son had arm blown off WWII and was one of the first men I saw with "mechanical hand". Remember Moore Pie Co, Kentucky and Swan Street. AJ Renyolds Tobacco Warehouse across the street. My mother and father used to go to BINGO at "Jerry Yount's" 22nd and Grand. Many many more Joe in Florida.

    2. How about I throw my 2 cents in? I was born and raised in the old Highland Park area, Park Blvd, Crittenden Drive, James Russell Lowell School. There was St Joe's Catholic School, Patterson Bakery and Ducky's Ice Cream store. Then there was the old Highland Park Theater which turned into a roller skating rink. Ruby's Drug Store, Thrift Dept Store, Silverman's, Goldstein's, Mohawk Drugs. We had the rag man and strawberry man walking the neighborhood. We were a tight knit neighborhood and when I misbehaved, the info got back to my mother before I even walked in the door. All that is gone now.........
