Thanks to all who answered my query about St. John's Evangelical Church. Now that I know it's still there, I'll put it on my list of "must do's" for the next time I'm in Louisville. Hopefully, that will be in November. Thanks again to everyone for your help. It seemed likely to me that if there was a St John's in the vicinity of Clay & Market it was more than a coincidence. I had given Pat this info hoping I wasn't sending her on a wrong lead. They have lots of records. My aunt's family went there and the man I spoke to this morning said they had very extensive records. susan ----- Original Message ----- From: "Pat Settle" <psettle@yahoo.com> To: <KYJEFFER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, June 02, 2002 11:54 PM Subject: Re: [KYJEFFER] St. John's Evangelical Church > Thanks, Susan, > > I'd like to visit the church next time I'm in Louisville if it's still > there. Pat, I had ordered the films for a St. Peter's Evangelical to look up the christening of of my ggrandfather. While looking through the films I realized that St. Peter's and St. John's were combined? Why, I have yet to find out? Market. The # is 502-587-1653. This is somewhere close to Clay St. There is no listing for a St. John's Evangelical Church. There is a listing for: St. John Lutheran Church-ELCA at 901 Breckenridge Ln. 502-895-9320 I have no idea if they could have moved to this location. A possible place to look for church listings would be in an early Louisville City Directory or newspaper. Janis in Louisville
I have a copy of the Baptism Record for my great-uncle, which gives his baptism date as April 9, 1893. This was obtained by my g-uncle during the first World War to prove his birth so that he could enter the Navy. The church's address is given as Clay and Market Streets, but I can't find it in any directories. I think it was a German Lutheran church. Does anyone know if it's still there? Thanks for any help. Well, at least 75 years. My ggf was buried there in 1914 and it was a growing business then. This is the website for the National Cemetery at Cave Hill. Click here: Cave Hill National Cemetery - Jefferson County, Kentucky Addicted genealogist, I hyperventilate at the site of an old cemetery
Cave Hill Cemetery is mainly a civilian cemetery, but there are military graves there also. I believe it was first started in 1848. My parents are buried there, as are my grandparents and many other relatives. Bill Boswell
The online listing of burials for Cave Hill are barely a drop in the bucket. It's a large cemetery. You can call the office for info. The number is 502-584-8363. The cemetery does have a Military section. I'm working on a pictorial web page of Cave Hill. And hope to have it finished soon. It's beauty is known the world over. If you find out what section and row Samuel is in I would be happy to take a photo for you. Nancy Shoemaker Louisville, Ky.
Cave Hill Cemetery is a regular civilian cemetery located in Louisville It has been there for at least 75 years, I'd say.
