    1. [KYJEFFER] re: marriages, Kentucky to Indiana
    2. SilverWolf
    3. Hello, Best thing would be to first go to the Indiana Genweb site: http://www.ingenweb.org/ingen_county.htm The counties have excellent information and links. This one will take you to a searchable database in the Indiana State Library, marriages to 1850: http://www.statelib.lib.in.us/www/indiana/genealogy/mirr.html If you have a subscription to Ancestry.com, or you know someone who does, they have a couple of Indiana marriage databases. 1. [KYJEFFER] Samuel D BOWMAN
    2. Karen Clanin
    3. my ggrandfather, Samuel Duffield Bowman has been a brick wall for me. i happened to find the below which surely has to be him as his father, Farro/Faro/Farrow Bowman was a cooper with (I'm told) a boat on the Ohio River. Samuel Duffield Bowman was born 1856 in Pope Co IL but they have been found invarious places along the river: Carroll Co KY, Trimble Co KY and 'sposidly Samuel married in Switzerland Co IN around 1885 to Amelia "Minnie" Bosaw but no marriage record has yet been found. this Louisville directory is only the 2nd time i have found his man -- previous was at age 4 in the 1860 census for Pope Co IL. if anyone can shed any light in this direction i would be most appreciative. he had siblings James T Bowman b 1850, Hugh MacCollie Bowman b 1857 (also called "Collie"), twins Edward and Edwin b 1860 and Martha b 1864. Collie has been found in a couple census but the others remain illusive also. i did find a Martha Bowman in the 1890 Louisville directory listed as laundress which since finding Samuel Duffield Bowman there in 1886 i tend to think it is his sister. Louisville, Kentucky Directories, 1886 Surname: Bowman Given Name: Duffield MI: Occupation: cooper Address: 2826 Montgomery thanks very much karen bowman clanin in CA

    3. Diane, What counties of Kentucky are covered on the CD? My understanding is that most of the Jefferson Co. marriages are NOT included. Therefore, if we can't find an entry, that doesn't mean the marriage isn't on file in the court house. Maybe you or others on the list can tell me if this is true or not. 1. Re: [KYJEFFER] 1840 census
    2. Rick Waggener
    3. Debbie- There is some information in the 1840 census. It's just a little more than the 1830 census, but even more information than the earlier ones. All white males and females in the household are counted in age groups that are basically every 10 years. If there are slaves in the household they are counted by gender and somewhat broader age categories. There are some very general categories for occupations and numbers in the household involved in them. I have found that if you know something about the people in the family, you can sometimes take a pretty good guess about who is who. This does give you some information. It will give you a general location for the household, which can be helpful also. As in other census records, there is some variation in how different enumerators filled in the sheets, and there can be errors. I believe some of the errors came from the person in the household who gave the information to the enumerator. If you want to give me a name and location, I would be happy to see what I can find. The good thing is there are far few census pages in 1840, and earlier and the records are pretty easy to transcribe. The first census that listed the name of everyone in the household was 1850. I have seen a lot of these however, where just the initials of the names are listed. Ancestry.com has this census also, and also with an index. These records are very compelling. If you are very lucky, you can document where a person was and who they were living with, for every 10 years of their lives (at least up until 1930). Rick Waggener sequoia@pacbell.net
