Debbie Papers copy obits to other papers because a family member thinks there is someone in that city who would be interested to learn of the death. An elderly person may have been active in a church or social organization for years in one town and then have to go live with an adult child or in a nursing home in another town. When that person dies, the papers may copy the newspapers in the where the person first lived because there are friends and acquaintances there who will be interested to learn of the death. It doesn't necessarily mean there is still family living in that town. Sometimes papers will copy a town where the person grew up but has not been there for years. It really depends upon what the family member requests and how sharp the obit editor is. Su
Hi.......That's my experience with older papers & their practice of informing papers of other areas re the passing of folks. Charlie Murphy near Seattle.
I don't know about the house, but if you go out Dixie towards Ft. Knox, there is a sign for Tioga Falls that says "Bridges of the Past." There is information there about the old Louisville-Nashville stage coach route, and you can walk part of it, but cannot drive it as it extends into the Ft. Knox property. Tioga Falls, btw, was apparently a summer resort in the early part of the 1800's. Really nice hike. Easy. Dixie was originally a toll road at one point. Alex
Thanks, Barb. I will make a trip out there and see if the book is still available. Interesting that Pond Settlement was identifiable as late as the 1860's. It could mean that he either has family there, or that he lived there at one time and had friends in the area.
Since I returned from vacation, I have been doing marriage lookups for people searching Louisville. Most of the time, I do not find the information people desire. As a result, I am going to re-post some advice for people who are looking for marriage records during the mid-late 1880s to the present. If you have an idea of where they lived from a census or from a city directory, then use the following web page to locate the church that served that address and contact them for help. I had an 1850 census that gave me a ward. Barb T on the list was able to tell me the boundaries of the ward. Then I researched catholic churches that served residents within the boundaries and narrowed down the search to two catholic churches. I got the e-mail address of the Louisville diocese historian and requested information. They found the record in the Cathedral of the Assumption. I posted the information I got from the Catholic Diocese and it is now on this web page: http://home.ix.netcom.com/~gsdownr/usgw/jefferson/church.html Also, Teddy had a marriage book she used to find the marriage. Maybe Teddy can post what the book was and how to get access to it. I am sure this URL has been published before, but I thought it deserved repetition: Louisville Free Public Library Obituary Database: http://www.louisville.lib.oh.us/genealogy/obit/ Diane Shaw Cool St. Louis, MO

I am trying to find an answer to a newspaper question. I haven't had much luck doing research in the Louisville newspapers so I'm hoping someone on the list might help with this. I recently got a disk of Catholic burials in St. Louis, MO. I know there are people on this list who are researching both St. Louis and Louisville as I am. If anyone on the list needs a lookup for St. Louis, MO Catholic burials, e-mail me off list with the names and I will look them up. Diane Shaw St. Louis, MO Looking for Heney, Heeney, Heeny - John and Ann, children: Matthew, Martha, James and Mary. Especially looking for 1860-1869 whereabouts of John and Ann.
I got on yesterday.
I apologize if this is not a pertinent subject. But my curiosity gets the best of me. There is an old 2 story bldg on Dixie Highway that has a wide porch, and a balcony on front of the second floor. It has been painted a gold color. I read somewhere that it used to be called Eight Mile House. My Dad said that was because when it was a stage coach stop, it was eight miles from Louisville. Does anyone know any further info on the building or know where I might find more info? It is on the East side of Dixie Highway. I haven't found anything on the internet. Thanks, Barb T
Hi, I'm a day late on this, but I have a little booklet put out by the Valley Woman's Club in it's 3rd Printing, 1993. I bought it a few years ago at the Gift Shop in Riverside, the Farnsley-Moreman House on the Ohio River. The little light pumpkin colored booklet has a copy of a map from the Filson Club. This is a Beers and Lanagan map from 1879. It incorrectly indentifies the two counties shown as Jefferson and Oldham. It is actually SW Jefferson and probably the northern tip of Hardin Co. It is the center page in the booklet. On Page 12, the book says, "Henry Maybaum was born in Prussia in the year 1833. His father, Charles, emigrated to America in 1834. He died in the Upper Pond Settlement in 1863 (near Orel) (sic). On Page 36, it says, "William Hollis married Winnie Lewis, daughter of Thomas Lewis of the Lower Pond Settlement." No sources are given for this data. Pond Creek runs Southwesterly from beyond the Manslick Road area, downward toward Orell. Dixie Highway used to be called Salt Pike and ran almost parallel with the railroad. Pond Creek was on the other side of the RR. It appears to circle around the north side of Moremen's Hill, which, I think, is now part of Jefferson Memorial Forest. The author is Mary Jane Yann Stapp. There are nice pictures of old houses that were in the area. There are 68 pages. No index. Also, no sources. But it is fun reading. Some families the author mentioned are. Camp, Ashby, Kennedy, Swearingen, Geo. Prentice (the Journalist), Duckwall, Lewis, Adams, Waller, Beahl, Alsop, Phillips, Swindler, Miller, Smith, Moreman/Moorman, Stephan, Smoot, Adylott, Quillman, Dodge, Pages, and quite a few more. I don't have any interest in this booklet except I love it. I paid 6 dollars but that was maybe 6 or 7 years ago. Anyone with an interest in the SW part of Jefferson County might enjoy the booklet, if any are still available. I hope this is of interest to Alex. The map is esp. interesting since it gives names of land owners at the time the map was drawn in 1879. The original should still be at the Filson Club. As to the book, please remember that no sources are given. Forgive me for repeating myself, but it's important to be aware of that. Barb T
The 1890 Louisville directory lists Hercules Hays at 1816 W. Walnut. Can anyone tell me which Catholic Church was near that address at that time? Thanks, Nancy
I tried home.ix.netcom.com/~gsdownr/usgw/jefferson/church.html and got a list of Jeffeson County, KY churches. Nancy
I just tried the link. It works, but won't likely be of any use to anybody on this list... unless they are searching for people in Louisville, Stark County, OH. Diane, Thanks for this info. I think it will be a great help to me. Nancy
Here's a link to Jefferson Co, KENTUCKY obits http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ky/jefferson/deaths.html Apparently the database which was on ancestry.com has been removed. Julie PS Cave Hill link works again! But there still aren't a lot of dates, apparently only for folks who died in the last 10 years or so.
