    1. [KYJEFFER] Re: KYJEFFER-D Digest V02 #188
    2. In regards to your Gustave vs August, I'll tell you what I have found in my family research. So very many times I'll find somebody listed as one name in this census and another name in the next census. These always turn out to be their middle name. A very knowledgable genealogist that used to work at our local library told me that that was a typical of Germans, to interchange first names & middle names. I think I have found it to be true even in Irish ancestors, also, or maybe it was just a regional thing in my area. I wonder if other researchers have found the same thing? But, my guess is that your relative's name was either Gustave August, or August Gustave. Diana

    3. Thanks. In my retirement years I sometimes go to the local middle school and substitute teach. The kids are a lot of fun and the subjects are usually so easy I can teach anything. But I often take a few minutes in a science class to tell a story. Once a year I tell about the ancient and honorable art of digging up outhouse pits. The kids are horrified, but I remind them that they are scientists when they are in the science rooms and that they have to look at things differently. I am fairly popular with the kids and have many more offers to sub than I care to tackle. 3. Hi, I just subscribed last week and I can't tell you how I have enjoyed the communication. I joined the list because my great grandfather Henry Norcross Peaslee was born in Louisville in 1838. His father is Stephen Moody Peaslee born 1808 in Haverhill, Essex, Ma married to Susan Danforth Norcross. I have Henry's siblings as Anita, Ada (b1835). Susan (b 1840), Charles, (b 1841), Theodore (b 1843), Alice (b 1848), Stephen (b 1850), and William (b 1853). That is all I have. Henry moved to Texas and married my great grandmother. Any more complete dates of birth, deaths, marriages, other relatives, etc, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Pat Nichols )

    1. [KYJEFFER] Samuel DUFFIELD BOWMAN
    2. Karen Clanin
    3. That illusive ggrandfather, Samuel Duffield Bowman, has appeared a 4th time. A lookup kindly found him where others had failed in 1880 census for Jefferson Co, he was living in household of James and Mary J Moore who was a cooper. Known as "Duffield Bowman" he was boarding along with several other people (Michael Spiegel with wife Anna and daughter Elizabeth, Albert Taylor, Adolph Gasshoff, Tilford Bowman, John Carroll, Joseph Hellmoth Sr and Joseph Hellmoth Jr -- all but one of these were also coopers.) If anyone can ad to this information I would be eternally grateful. So far he was found in 1860 census for Pope Co, ILL as a 4 year old with family, big gap to this 1880 census, then I found him in 1886 Directory for Louisville as Duffield Bowman, and then in 1904 for a 2nd marriage in Marion County Indiana as S.Duffield Bowman. Not many appearances for a 40 year span. There was a marriage sometime around 1885 ? to Amelia "Minnie" Bosaw of Switzerland Co, IND where she and children appear regularly in census w/o out him. In 1900 she is marked as divorced. I have not yet found this marriage or divorce. Thanks for any help. Karen Bowman Clanin

    2. Eric & Karen Abston Steed
    3. Speaking of 'Rats', I just got a note from the Smithsonian. Is it not amazing what we 'run into' ? [ Some of you may recall that a month or so ago, while pouring over some of the Louisville Directory Data others have sent to me ( J.L. Nichols, Are you out there? ) I noticed that my Great- Great Grandfather, Theophile Conrad hired one John F.C. Hegewald in about 1902 as Secretary of his Conrad Tanning Co., Inc. I was very curious about his initials 'J.F.C.' and at the time, plugged his name into the search engines and got back John 'Falls City' Hegewald. My curiosity was further aroused. ( By the way- The Internet is a dynamic, living, breathing entity. I have as yet been unable to replicate my original discoveries. For the moment you will just have to take my word for it ). Once again I set off on the 'Quest'. This time I discovered that in about 1878 General William Tecumseh Sherman, among other things a regent at the then new Smithsonian Institution, asked Col. Peter T. Swain ( Jot that name down, will you. It comes up a little later from a Genealogical perspective ) to recover what have become known as the 'Sherman Logs'. Col. Swain, in turn, selected Lieutenant J.F.C. Hegewald to head up a unit of about 12 - 14 men and set about to recover the multiple-ton petrified trees from Navajo Springs. About a year later he succeeded. At the time they were associated with the 15th Infantry Regiment. The 15th, in it's various manifestations, was involved in Indian Wars, The Civil War, more Indian Wars, The Spanish American War, The Boxer Rebellion, the Filipino Uprising ...... [ Not Necessarily in chronological order, Virginia ] Sherman, if you will recall, was in Louisville for some time on the express orders of Mr. Lincoln " Protecting Kentucky ". Hegewald was born in New Albany, and in all likelihood enlisted at Louisville. Now, about Col. Peter T. Swaine. Theophiles daughter Lucy, married James Phillip Eagle, grandson of the Governor James Phillip Eagle ( Arkansas 1889 - 1893 ) and himself related to Charity Swain ....... Ooops !! [ Swaim, Swain, Swaine ........ Hhhm-mmm-mmn ?? ] Anyway, The Smithsonian has promised me a copy of a letter written during or just after the journey / adventure to General William Tecumseh Sherman, which they say, is all that remains of the whole affair ........ By the way, Governor Eagle's Wife was one of the movers & shakers of the Great Southern Expositions in Louisville from about 1882 - 1886. The Smithsonian, and one might suspect General Sherman were also quite involved. Again, last year I was able to access quite a great deal about 'The Governors Wife' & The Great Southern Expositions ...... This year, I have not been able to find it again. A Genealogical Lesson: Back Everything Up !!! You might recall my Great-Great Grandfather began building Conrad Castle ( 2 Saint James Court or 1402 depending on how you look at it ) in 1882 - 1883. Belgravia Court AND Saint James Court .... At the time he lived kitty-corner to the site on Park or Magnolia ( Drat- I need a map ) Anyway ..... It's the big Brick structure with the convent-like wall around it ( In fact, I believe it became a convent just after that ) that was also used briefly for what was to become Collegiate. This entire area was, in theory, occupied by the Great Southern Expositions. Theophile's daughter Lucy most likely met her husband here. In early August ( 6 - 11 August to be exact ) she and her Father were at-court in Austria where she made her Debut on the event of her 21st birthday. ( Later she was to knock at least two years off her birthday out of feminine vanity ). Footnote: Conrad Castle, later bought and then sold again by the Caldwell's ( who later moved to Bates Court just down the street from the house where I grew up ) was NOT done up originally in that French Motif. Theophile and his Wife Mary Krieger were of Germanic / Austrian or Prussian stock. Granted, it was considered far more fashionable to be French after the time of Napoleon <ggg>. 3. Dear Listers, Contrary to appearances, I have not been drinking or taking pain pills left over from my recent surgery. I will admit to working with three of four lists at one time while writing an article which required my going through an inch of old "Courier-Journal" articles mixed with Frankfort "Yeoman" articles from 1874. So my latest repetitions and confusion about who sent what comments about outhouses and such is due to old age and quantities of paperwork that probably should belong in outhouses. The episode reminds me of an attempt a newspaper person tried to make: "Yesterday we said that Mr. Johnson was a lieutenant in the police force. We meant to say he was a captain in the police farce." Outhouses have special significance for me because I want to dig in one on a farm near Georgetown, KY. I am trying to convince my cousin that his farm is the one set up in 1786 by our common ancestor, a Rev War soldier in VA and Indian fighter under D. Boone and G. R. Clark in the Lexington area. If I can locate the old pits and dig them up, I might find evidence of their existence. Deeds and such burned in 1830. Tom the bewildered

    1. [KYJEFFER] John Delaware Otter
    2. I'm hoping someone can help me with info regarding John Delaware Otter who was born July 4, 1814 in Virginia and died in June 1883 in Louisville, Ky. He married Nancy R Vertrees in 1837. She was born Sept 10, 1816 and was the daughter of John Jacob and Catherine Davis Vertrees of Elizabethtown, Ky. I have came across information that said John was the largest wholesale grocer in Louisville. The article stated that his sons continued running the family business after his death. I believe he had at least 4 sons. However, I have info on only one son, William Pleasant Otter. He was b July 30, 1838 (possibly Brownsville, Ky) and died Oct 18, 1917 in Louisville. His wife was Anne Mills Crenshaw, d/o Benjamin Mills and Nancy Patterso Munford Crenshaw. Priscilla
