My poor great grandmother lived by visiting each of her children in turn. She worked as a seamstress in her younger years after her divorce in 1916. Another g.g grandparent (John Netherton) in Bullitt Co. KY got a county payment each year (beginning 1881) for a neighbor to supply him and his wife with food. "It is ordered that the paupers of Bullitt County be taken care of by the lowest and best bidder for one year beginning 15 October 1883. Sealed bids will be received at the October Court of Claim 1883, the Court reserving the right to reject any and all bids." 1882 Bullitt County Court of Claims After a few years a county poor house was built for the paupers. Allison, Thank you so much for all those Schnetz (and variations of spellings) deaths from Louisville. The Jefferson County Department of Historic Preservation and Archives, 810 Barret Ave., Louisville, KY 40204, did send me a copy of the page in the 'Mortuary Record' where Robert was listed in 1895. Some of the other listings show KY as place of death. Robert's place of death looks like 'City' whatever that would mean. But Miller was the undertaker and Cave Hill was the cemetery. David Morgan, from The Archives, said that they could not do a 'blanket search', only a 'specific search' with name and date of death. I'm so excited to get that list of deaths. Thanks again. Could anyone tell me if it is possible to obtain a death record for someone who died in Louisville in 1898? If so, where should I write? Thanks, Nancy

Lorraine, if this list you have on loan is alphabetical could you look for this guy for me! He's been extremely illusive. Looking for death of a David or Daniel Bosaw, he has appeared in census as both when with family. Father Joseph Bosaw, mother Abby/Abigail Rose. According to census he was born 1838/1839 in IN, the Bosaw/Bosso/Boisseaux family were in Switzerland Co,IN. He appeared in 1900 census in Posey Co, IN but I am told he died in Louisville so would be after that, I have not found him in the death index for KY. Thank you for any help. Karen

Could someone tell me what is included in the KY Birth, Marriage and Death Records, 1852-1910 ? Are these for counties other than Louisville and Jefferson County? I know the Louisville Mortuary records start in 1866 to 1910. I was told there were none earlier than 1866. Thanks for a reply, Janis in Louisville

The State - excuse me - Commonwealth of Kentucky did not do death certificates until 1911, and we are very lucky that the City of Louisville had what they called "Mortuary Books" that they kept from 1866 until the state took over in 1911. It appears that young Robert probably either wasn't one of her children and may well have died outside of the City of Louisville - or maybe they missed him in the records (or I did). Anyhow, if you know the addresses of your Schnetzes between 1886-1889, you may find that these are among them. I will be getting the Jefferson Co. Marriage Registers on film soon, and could possibly look out for your Schnetz family there. However, like death records, the state took over the marriage records in 1911, so you should probably check to see if those records are available through the state for at least Charles & Louis, who would have been too young (or close to too young in Charles' case) to have married prior to 1911. Hello, Can you please tell me what widows lived on "before" Social Security? Widow's Pension maybe???? What I am actually getting at is I am trying to find out if there may be a form "of some kind" that my ancestor may have had to fill out that would have her parents names on it. I do have her Death record....and BOTH parents names on there differ from other sources such as the census & my gg grandmother's 1st marriage records. Since the death record information was supplied by an informant.....I was "really" hoping to find something else that she may of had to fill out herself prior to her death....that would have her parents listed. But What? Her Obituary only lists her children. Her marriage record to my gg grandfather does not list the parents names since they were in their 30's when they married. Does anyone have any ideas? Hello Lorraine, I've got the whole darn Louisville Mortuary Books on microfilm checked out at my local Family History Center, and I've been doing some look-ups for people. I'm not too sure what happened to your William Lausterer, but he doesn't seem to have died or been buried in Louisville. I looked thru the whole index and didn't find ANY actual "Lausterer" entries. LAUSESKIR?, Jane book 9 pg 173 (1895-1897 range) LAUSHER, Joseph E. book 14 pg 281 (1907-1909 range) LAUSEHER, Eliz E. book 15 pg 8 (1909-1910 range) Have you checked across the river in Indiana? It is possible that he died in Clark or Floyd Cos. Ind - or maybe just in the "country" in Jefferson County. Unfortunately, there are no county or state death records for Louisville area until 1911, and the City records are the best things we have. I wish I could have found him for you - only suggestion I've got is to trace the locations of any known children - he may have died and/or been buried whereever they were. Good luck & happy hunting! Hi, I'm not an expert on this, but I believe that Widow's Pensions were for those whose husbands had served in a war. Otherwise, before SS, a widow had to have her own income, thru work or inherited property, or she had to be dependent on relatives or friends. Many women lived with sons or sons in law. Friends might help the widow out with food or shelter. Poor women had a really hard time of it before SS and sadly, it isn't always a whole lot better for them now. Back then, the county might help the widow out. I don't know of any Pensions for women before Social Security. I don't know of any applications for pensions women would have filled out, except for their husband's military service in a war. I'd be curious if anyone can add better info to what I've said here.
