I also remember that store in the 1930s, we used to simply call it Bestens. There was another store not in the Louisville book, The John C. Lewis Co.; it was a very nice ladies apparel store I believe on corner of 4th & Liberty Streets. It went out of business in the early 1930s during the depression. >BESTEN and LANGAN in downtown Louisville. < That would have been in the 1940's. Elisabeth W. Salyer elws@mounet.com
thanx... it's a storage problem. -----Original Message----- From: Earthwks2@aol.com [mailto:Earthwks2@aol.com] Sent: Sunday, September 08, 2002 1:40 PM To: KYJEFFER-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [KYJEFFER] Beasly and Langan How about e-mailing the Filson Club in Louisville? Hello Mary Fran, While I can't answer most of the questions you posed on 3 August, I believe I can help you with a few of them. If JB was in the city of Louisville in 1840 for the Census (as opposed to being out in the country), he probably will be listed in the City Directories. The first CD for Louisville came out in 1832 and then every few years thereafter. It could help narrow down when he came to town - and the tax lists could help even more if he owned land. I did find a few of the family in the Louisville Mortuary Books: Vol. 3 page 20 RICHEY, C.N. male/white/married age 29 yrs cause: delirium tremens duration: 3 days Dr. Koehler attending born "city" residence: 75 W. Richey vol 9; John Richie Vol 9 and Chas W. Richie Vol 11 yet, but I will be doing so next week when the Family History Center is open again. If any of the rest of these folks look promising, let me know and I'll check them out too. I also have the Marriage Registers for Jefferson County on microfilm available, and if you have marriages you'd like me to check, let me know. For those, I need fairly good date estimates, as there are 18 rolls of microfilm to check (by date of course!), as opposed to a "mere" 9 rolls for the mortuary books. So, here's some preliminary information, and I'll be back with the second installment soon. Cheers! Hi LOUBOY Bill! I just so happens that I've got all 18 rolls of the microfilmed Jefferson Co. Marriage Records on loan at my local friendly Family History Center, and I found that in fact, your g-grands were hitched as indicated: Vol. 5, page 100 Herbst, Adam to Schroerder, Mary Eve married 14 Oct 1851 by Otto Lair [may be "Sair"] "she the widow of James as proved by Andrew Nichlas" license procured 1 Oct 1851 Her name was spelled as above, which might clarify things. That doesn't necessarily help prying the records out of the Church, but at least you do have the date right. If this was my problem, I think I'd check out the Louisville City Directory for 1851 (or the closest date available) to see where they lived and which Catholic Church was closest to them (and also double-check to make sure that Lair/Sair wasn't the Presbyterian minister or something!) If you're sure they were Catholic, you could consider checking to see if the Archdiocese of Louisville has any archives or if any of St. Boniface's records have been microfilmed. (My Louisville lot were all Methodists & Baptists, so I can't be of more specific help to you on this.) Anyhow, good luck and happy hunting, Cheers! I'm almost positive I remember a store named BESTEN and LANGAN in downtown Louisville. That would have been in the 1940's. Bill (born in '36) Horine
Thanks! That makes sense. At least I know that Grandpa's memory might have been half right:) Pat in Ohio
The 1890 Louisville Directory lists Winn & Langan, merchant tailors, proprietors Martin J. Winn and Edward J. Langan, 223 Fourth St. Perhaps Besley bought out Winn. It must have been a good sized department store for the time: R. M. Beadles Winn & Langan trav agent b Alexander's Hotel KY Frank J. Emge Winn & Langan cutter New Albany KY Edward J. Langan Winn & Langan 1308 W. Jefferson KY Joseph Sachs Winn & Langan bushelman 728 E. Gray KY Patrick Shea Winn & Langan cutter 1328 W. Langan Winn & Langan merchant tailors 223 4th KY
HI Barbara - According to my Grandfather's memoirs, the year was 1893, and here is a quote "Mrs. Fowler said to Beachie, here is $400.00, you and Robert go to Louisville and go to Besley and Langan? and get your wedding clothes. So one morning we took the morning train and went to the city and put up at the Louisville Hotel at Fourth and Main Streets." It just always sounded to me like a Department Store, or maybe a specialty shop. How about the Louisville Hotel? Was there one at Fourth and Main? I really appreciate your efforts!!!! Thanks! Hello Listers, I am wondering if there is an index to Ky. deaths, not just Jefferson. I am looking for Alonzo Arnold. I don't have a date of death. The last time I have him is in the 1920 census. Jefferson/Louisville. I haven't found him in 1930 yet. He was born abt. 1856. I sent for his birth record from Ky. Geneological Society. No record in Jefferson County. I thought maybe a death record would help locate his birth record. Sincerely, Patty
If anyone knows the enumeration districts for the following addresses in Jefferson County, I would appreciate any help. 1764 Bolling Ave. City of Louisville 2100 N. Burnett Avenue. City of Louisville Thanks so much. Sincerely, Patty

The reason why the Northwest Territories has the township system of descriptions is because of the problems with legal title from KY military warrants. It was a nightmare. Kentucky uses the same metes and bounds system that Virginia uses because they were part of Virginia at the time the land was originally surveyed. The practice referring to things that are no longer there seems to come quite naturally to Kentuckians. One of the first things that newcomers to the east end of Louisville learn is the location of "where the old Sears used to be" on Shelbyville Road. The Sears hasn't been there for 20 years, but the building is an important navigational landmark for area residents.
Valley Road that is off of Barret has gorgeous old houses that would have been there in the 1930's, and the addresses are small numbers. My daughter went to a swim party over that way a few weeks ago. It is off Eastern Parkway near Tyler Park.
