Carol, I tried it again, and here are the steps I followed. First, I went to www.familysearch.org , then I clicked on Family History Library, then Family History Library Catalog, then on "place search". When that came up, I just typed in "Louisville". A page came up with several places named "Louisville", including one "Kentucky, Jefferson, Louisville". Click on that and you'll get a list of many different types of records. Then click on "church records", and you'll get the list of different church records they have. Hope this works for you. Dear Listers, Thank you very much for the quick response about the A.V. Dupont Company. My weak recollection about the Maryland outfit, which I studied in MBA school, was that it was a schlock outfit with a good public relations branch. When it took over Alfred Nobel's dynamite concession for America, it became big time. Railroad building used far more explosives than wars did, I was told. Dupont supplied the railroads. Although I spent my first 27 years in Louisville, I had no idea what A. V. Dupont was. Now I know. Also, I used to correspond with George Yater, who wrote interesting materials about the Lewis and Clark Expedition (my mother was a Pryor and the Nathaniel Hale Pryor who was on that trek interested me). George did not tell me he wrote a history of Louisville. Finally, as for the booze connection, I would guess that Dupont printed labels and advertising for the industry. Of course, that is speculation. During WWII in Louisville, my dad, who was too old for military service, took a federal job. He was a storekeeper-gauger who tested whiskey in bonded warehouses and kept tax records. I have seen the insides of many distilleries and breweries. Then he was an agent for the Alcohol Tax Unit of the Treasury Department--a federal revenuer for KY and TN. He didn't drink much. I drink even less. Tom, formerly of Louisville.
Tom, According to "The Encyclopedia of Louisville", pages 257 & 258: DU PONT, ALFRED VICTOR, (b. Wilmington, Delawae, April 18, 1833; d. Louisville, May 16, 1893). Entrepreneur. Alfred "Uncle Fred" Victor du Pont was the third son of Alfred Victor Philadelphe and Margaretta (Lammot) du Pont. After his uncle, Henry du Pont, mde it clear that there would e no position at the family's company in Delaware, Fred and his younger brother, Antoine Budermann du Pont, moved to Louisville in 1854 to seek their own fortunes. The elder brother purchased a paper mill at Tenth and Rowan Streets and made Bidermann his partner. Three years later, du Pont founded the A. V. du Pont co., and the business thrived. He soon branched into other ventures including the Central Passenger Railway Co. in Louisville and invested in other street railway companies in Cleveland, Brooklyn, and Chicago. Because of his popularity and wealth, Alfred became the vice pesident and director of the First National Bank in Louisville." The rest of the article is a glowing testimonial to the man and his popularity . The article states that du Pont Manual Training High School was named for him. So much for your booze theory Pat Settle Thomas Fiske <evitom@altrionet.com> wrote:Dear Listers, I have found, due to the kindness of a fellow Lister, that my ggf was an engineer for the A. V. Dupont company in Louisville in 1871. Has anyone heard of this outfit? The Dupont company that we all know about today was a poor, lackluster outfit in Europe until WWI, so I do not think this is the same company. Looking at the history of the Fiske family, I suspect that A. V. Dupont had something to do with the distilling business. The Fiskes were constantly involved with the manufacture or shipment of booze. I believe it was my gggf, Peleg Fiske of New Albany, who was a riverboat pilot that delivered whiskey to the Confederate army until about 1864 when the Yankees shot his boat out from under him in Louisville. That action slowed him down a bit. Tom, formerly of Louisville --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Y! Web Hosting - Let the expert host your web site

Hi Julie! In the 1910 Saloon listings there is a saloon at 800 E. Main. The name of the proprietor is GAGAN, MATT. Janis
Hi Sue! In the 1910 directory listings under Saloons, there is a J P FLAHERTY at 1486 S 18th. I checked the street listings that I have copied b/c my BOTT saloon and brewery was at 1601 S 18th. I only have pages up thru 1908 for the street listings and there was no 1486 address as yet. The cross street would be Maple. Janis in Louisville
Hi Janis Can you see if Flaherty's 5 is in your list of saloons and give me the info ? Thanks. Sue
