    1. Re: [KYJEFFER] How to get death books and index to them
    2. Alison K Douglas
    3. The City of Louisville's Health Department kept a register of all deaths within the city from Feb. 1866 through 1910 when the state started keeping death records. The "Louisville Mortuary Books" have been microfilmed and are available from the LDS Family History Library on a total of nine rolls of microfilm: Index 1866-1895 (Vol 1-8) Film # 1844137 Index 1895-1907 (Vol 9-13) 1844138 Index 1907-1910 (Vol 14-15) 1844139 Vol. 1-4 1844130 Vol. 5-6 1844131 Vol. 7-8 1844132 Vol. 9-11 1844133 Vol. 12-13 1844134 Vol. 14-15 1844135 Prices and times to rent the films vary by how much your local Family History Center needs to charge to cover their expenses, but the usual price/time is under $5.00 per roll for a month to six weeks. For all of us who can only get to Louisville every few years (at best!), the microfilms are a treasure trove of information. Note that altho these films are indexed in the Family History Library Catalog under "KY, Jefferson Co. Vital Stats" - they are NOT county-wide, but just for the city of Louisville itself. The Louisville Courier-Journal published mortality statistics at the end of every month based on reports compiled by the Health Dept. from the books - for those who are interested in such things.... And most of the entries actually do have most of the information noted by Janis in her posting. "Residence" unfortunately is often actually "place of death" - very unhelpful once more people started going to hospitals to die. "Condition" is marital condition, occupation is often omitted and cause of death sometimes very odd indeed. Often the handwriting is dreadful and, like all information of this type, the information is only as reliable as the informant, but it is vastly more information than most places gave for deaths during this time period! Happy hunting! 1. Re: [KYJEFFER] How to get death books and index to them
    2. Diane: I do research at the Louisville Public Library of death records. I do not know, nor have I ever heard, of such records. The only chance that I know of that you would have is if you have the death dates one could look in the 1866 news papers. Most of the older newspapers had very few obituaries and the ones list were mostly death notices. I would be very interested in obtain the information if someone writes and tells you were the death index are. 3. How do I get access to the "Index to Death Books for Louisville 1866 -?". I know that some of my Keagan rellies are listed in the index, but I don't know how to get the actual info that is in the Death Books. I looked for this on the LDS web site in the catalog for Louisville but found nothing. The names in the index do not come up on an Ancestry search. I got the info in the first place by paying someone to do lookups. Does anyone know how an out of town lister can get access to the Death books for Louisville from 1866 - and to the index for them? MARGARET4 QUARTERMOUS (ANN "NANCY" ELIZABETH3 PENDERGAST, JESSE ELLIOTT2, GARRETT1) was born 1826 in Jefferson County, Kentucky, and died June 01, 1853 in Jefferson County, Kentucky. She married WILLIAM WELLS February 03, 1844 in Jefferson County, KY, son of THOMAS WELLS and MARY MILES. Children of MARGARET QUARTERMOUS and WILLIAM WELLS are: 6. i. SAMUEL THOMAS5 WELLS, b. November 19, 1846, Bullitt County, KY; d. June 19, 1913, Columbus, Hickman County, KY. ii. ANN ELIZABETH WELLS, b. November 14, 1844; m. JACOB CYRUS JOHNSON, December 21, 1865; b. April 09, 1842. Notes for ANN ELIZABETH WELLS: Obituary of Anna E. Wells Johnson, Judsonia, Arkansas on May 10, 1913. Anna E. Wells was born on Nov 15, 1844, in the State of Kentucky. She was married to J. C. Johnson , December 21, 1865, To this union nine children were born, four sons and five daughters, all of whom have reached the age of manhood and womanhood; and were all present to take a parting look upon the face of her who gave them existence. She was numbered amont the many loyal, faithful members of the Judsonia Baptist church. Her home for the past twenty-two years has been in white County, Ark., and she is well and favorably known to all. Anything I might say would add nothing to her queenly virtue; her life has been an open book, that all might see and read. She became a Christian at the age of fourteen years, and identified herself with the Baptist church, and was faithful to the end. Her husband, who walked by her side for so many years, preceded to the great beyond eight years ago.; and we can imagine something of the rejoicing at the meeting in that distant world. She departed this life May 6, 1913, at the age of 68 years, 5 months and 21 days. Funeral services were conducted by the writer (her pastor) at the home in Judsonia, May 7, text from Heb. 9:27. Personally, I knew but little of Mrs. Johnson's life, our acquaintance having been short; but I am told by those who knew her most and best, that she was such a good women; and that means much to me. Her home was the first one I entered in Judsonia, and she always impressed me as being a noble Christian character, a kind and loving mother; a woman who natuarally won her way to the hearts of people. At the time of her death, she was conducting the Johnson House near the depot in Judsonia, where for a number of years she has been a special friend to the traveling fraternity, by whom she will be long and lovingly remembered, and who today enter into full sympathjy with this sorrowing family; which was fully demonstrated by the goodly number of traveling men in attendance at the funeral services. We can truly say: "A good women is gone. As the ripened golden fruit falls to the ground, so she fell; but as the falling of the fruit is the source of life, because the decaying body is food to the seed within, so also was the falling of this tired pilgrim. She fell to give to the earth that which is earthly, but to god she gave her spirit, and by and by, if we are faithful to the will of the great King, we will join hands on that beautiful shore, in the paradis of our God. Therefore, let me say to these sorrowing sons and daughters, lean upon the arm of Jesus in this your strong hour of affliction, and follow the example of Christ-like purity mother has left you. A. K. Williams Judsonia, Arkansas, May 10, 1913 . Generation No. 5 6. Would love to see what you have. I think my material should be in the archives...but maybe not. My computer died and my nephew tried to save my material but don't think he realized how important the genealogical stuff was! Paulina

I have a copy of the book and would be happy to make copies of pages. It is a very small book with no index. A couple of years ago I shared everything I had about the Pendergrast, Young, Standiford family. I wonder if it is in the archives. If you didn't get it I would be happy to send it to you. Paulina

    2. Their is some information on the Fish Pools Plantation in this book. It was a history of the Okolona Area. I believe that it was originally written in the 1950s. I read in the Courier Journal about the Okolona Womens Club trying to put together a Updated version of the First Edition. The only place that I know that has a copy of the first book is the Okolona Branch of the Louisville Public Library. They made a copy of the book. The book, I believe was in bad shape and needed some repair. How are you related to the Plantation? I am related only by marriage. Theodore Young, son of John Douglass Young and Eliza Blair, married Elizabeth Pendergrast. Elizabeth Pendergrast was the daughter of Jesse Pendergrast and Elizabeth Moore. My fifth great grandfather is named Richard Young and John D. Young is his half brother. Their father was a William Young and he married two times. The first marriage, I have not determined who Richard's mother is. William Youngs second marriage was to a Mildred Douglass of the Orange County Virginia area and she is the mother of John D. Young. These Youngs are from the Fayette and Jessamine County Kentucky. William Young came from the Caroline, Spotsylvania, Louisa areas of Virginia. Maybe we can share some information. Jeff Jeppson

    3. Searching for the history of naming the Harris Fork of Rock Lick Creek. Located on page 47 E-6 of Delorme Kentucky Atlas. Today this is in Breckenridge County, but originally would have been Jefferson, then Nelson, then Hardin and last Breckenridge County. Located close to the town of Vanzant. Thanks Mike Lamb
