I am searching for some(any) kind of death record for Charles M Hagan died 11/26/1939. He lived at 1384 Portland Ave. He was buried in Zachary Taylor Cemetery in plot A 72. I can find nothing on him. Where can I look? Thanks Dorothy
Samuel Harris on 11-11-1783 enters 300 acres on or near watercourse listed as branch of Rock Lick Creek, entered in book#10 page 261 of Virginia Grants, Jefferson Co, Ky. I think this is Samuel Harris Jr, son of Samuel and Suzanna (Mayhew) Harris. James Harris, brother to Samuel Jr, shows 400 acres on Cedar Creek just north of Elizabethtown in 1784 at this time it was still Jefferson Cty. 1783 James enters 150 acres on Bear Creek just a few miles southeast of Litchfield, which is in Grayson Cty today. Stephen Harris also a brother of Samuel Jr and James enters 300 acres on Lick Creek, west of Bardstown, Ky, which is in Nelson Cty today. Other land allotments for Samuel Sr's family are located at: http://www.statelib.lib.in.us/www/ihb/resources/landallottments.html Here you will find allotments for Samuel Sr, Samuel Jr, James, and John Maline Harris (this is actually John Mayhue Harris, just misspelled). This is Jefferson County land allotments for early settlers: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ky/jefferson/court/land/1782land.txt Here is listed James, Ruth, John Mayhue, and their mother, Susannah Harris. I do not know the locations of Ruth and Susannah's property! From the information I have now, I think the Harris fork of Rock Lick Creek was named for Samuel Harris, Jr. If any local historians or geneaolgists can add information or change my perspective on this, please let me know. Need to have more information on these Harris' families. Stephen Harris immigrated to Illinois. I think his property went to James Harris and some to John Mayhue Harris. Thanks, Mike Lamb Searching for the history of naming the Harris Fork of Rock Lick Creek. Located on page 47 E-6 of Delorme Kentucky Atlas. Today this is in Breckenridge County, but originally would have been Jefferson, then Nelson, then Hardin and last Breckenridge County. Located close to the town of Vanzant. Thanks Mike Lamb

Janis' suggestion about inter-library loan got me thinking about what other resources might be available that way. Would you mind suggesting libraries in Louisville that I might contact to find out what is available on inter-library loan? Do you know if there are Catholic church records in the libraries? As far as I know, the only library that has them is the University of Notre Dame in Indiana and they won't lend them out. If the records have been filmed - and some have definitely been filmed - why are they only available at Notre Dame? Maybe they are in a collection there in Louisville and available through inter-library loan. Any ideas about libraries that might have resources in their collections that we out of town folks could get using inter-library loan? Diane Shaw
I am going to expose my ignorance here and explain that when I read the film title "Births and index; Deaths and index"- I understood that to be only the index - not the actual records. After I read your post, I read the film notes and at the bottom of the list I could clearly see that not only was the index there - the actual records are there. Thanks, Deborah, for clearing this up. Thanks, Janis for the info on inter-librry loan. I will probably get this info from LDS. Now that I know the records are there, I plan to search both the HEENEY and KEEGAN sides of the family. Maybe this thread will help other people who are searching from out of town. It is possible that there could be another ditzy researcher who missed the fact that the death records are contained on the same set of films with the index for them. Duh! Speaking of inter-library loan, I tried to get church records and cemetery records for Assumption Cathedral and St. Louis Cemetery from Notre Dame University, which has these records on microfilm, but they will not lend them out on inter-library loan. Again - thanks to everyone who helped. Diane Shaw Hillsboro, MO (St. Louis)

I'm wondering if you used a keyword or title search or place search? I like to go to the catalogue and use a place search, such as Louisville, (part of) Kentucky. A list of subject/record headings will appear. At the very end of the list will be VITAL Records. The birth and death records and their indexes are listed under this subject heading. One can also use a place search such as Jefferson part of Kentucky or Jefferson County (part of) Kentucky to get a list of subject headings for records specific to Jefferson County. Below is the information from the FHL catalogue. You will see the film numbers for specific dates as Janis shared previously. Diane, I was at the Library last nite and inquired about getting these records through the interlibrary sharing. I was told that you could check with your library. As far as cost, I was told it would depend on what or if your library charged a fee. It might be worth asking them. If they participate in this program, it might be cheaper than through the LDS and maybe you could have access to them longer. Just a thought, Janis
Many thanks to Janis, Alison, Debbie and everyone else who helped me to identify the "Index for Death Records 1866-1910" for Louisville" - especailly to Alison who gave me the LDS film numbers for the volumes. I revisited the on line LDS catalog for Louisville, Kentucky and found no reference to death records, so the film numbers were the only way to find the films. Had I known that these records were available when I was doing the HEENEY side of the family, I probably could have found quite a few records. I appreciate all the help with this question. I am going to be in the University of Louisville's library this weekend, working on some stuff for a class. However, I'm also taking the opportunity to look up some obituaries. Thanks so much for this information, Janis!!
I was told by one librarian who was helping me search that death notices are free, whereas obits cost. Thanks. I should have used logic to discern the difference between an obit and a death notice but would rather ask and know for sure. Pam
Hello Pam: An obituary notice usually goes much more into detail, such as where person lived, names of children and etc. Death notices were usually only a couple or three lines giving mostly that person had died and time and place of funeral. I have seen some that would be under a heading "DEATH" and may have four or five names listed one below the other. There would be no information on them at all. For Louisville, a copy of the Index for Death Records 1866-1910 and the Death/Mortuary records are, also, on microfilm at the Main Louisville Library. The person's Name, Color, Sex, Condition, Date of Death, Date of Birth, Age, Occupation, Place of Birth, Cause of Death, Residence, Ward, Name of Undertaker, Place of Burial, Date of Burial and Name of Doctor is what is listed across the page on each line entry. You could try contacting the Genealogy Section at the Library and ask them if there are any circulating copies through the interlibrary system.
