There are 8 Henry Clay's in Jefferson Co. in 1880, but none with a wife by the name of America. Do you have any further info? Also, the 1880 census is free online at www.familysearch.org Debbie ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rita Gipe" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, February 14, 2005 9:07 PM Subject: [KYJEFFER] Adams > I'm looking for help with the Jefferson County 1880 & 1890 census. The family of Henry Clay & America Adams.I need their children. Thanks so much > Rita Gipe > > > ==== KYJEFFER Mailing List ==== > The Jefferson County, Kentucky History and Genealogy page is proud to be a part of the KyGenWeb and the USGenWeb Projects, both of which are not-for-profit endeavors. I'm looking for help with the Jefferson County 1880 & 1890 census. The family of Henry Clay & America Adams.I need their children. Thanks so much Rita Gipe
I am told by the wonderful folks at the National Archives that the 1890 census is not obtainable. Most of it was destroyed in a fire at the archives in Washington DC prior to microfilm. Who is this John Norton? I have nothing on him except he was born in France per a census record. Catharine's maiden name is unknown and she was born in Switzerland or Germany. After John's death, Catharine married Casper Beard and they were living in Louisville, KY. When Catharine died she was buried in Clark County, IN in the St. Francis Catholic Cemetery. I don't know if she was Catholic or not. Her son-in-law was though and she is buried by his family. Any help with this family will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Teddy! You're wonderful. You mentioned not being able to find "George". Was that for someone else or did I list Wanda's brother Edward Harris as George? (my grandson's dad's name is george and I may have had him on my brain!) Wanda's brother (my sister's dad) died in January 25, 1996. Wanda died a few weeks later in March of the same ailment. Gosh, this obit gives so much information. I had no idea her husband was a Reverend. My aunt died in Ky a couple of Mondays ago and the Courier Journal obit listed her name and when she died. Nothing about surviviors or anything. I was sort of shocked. It seemed so cold...sort of "she lived, she died. the end" Thanks again Pam Florida
Hello. This may be old information that has been given on the list before. Some records of marriages and deaths for Louisville and Jefferson County are kept in the Jefferson County Archives located at 810 Barret Ave. I have been successful in finding several marriage and death records from the late 1800's. The personnel there are very helpful. Hope this helps someone looking for information from this time period. The only charge is for copies that you make. Hey list members, It is generally frowned upon on most Rootsweb mailing lists to promote books for sale. Rootsweb believes in promoting free genealogy research, but finds no problem with letting researchers know what materials are available that might be helpful in our research. Having said that, I hope I'm not going to stretch the patience of some of you here, even though I find this topic completely appropriate. There has been an update to the Genealogy Books of Jefferson County page and I would like to invite you to check out some of the material there: http://www.rootsweb.com/~kyjeffer/jeffersonbooks/books.html One of our very own list members, Alan Murray, has put together a book entitled, "Death Notices for Jefferson County, Kentucky". It has been added to the Jefferson County KyGenWeb page. However, this is somewhat different. Alan is not doing this for his personal monetary gain, as he has contracted with the publishing company and given them full rights to the book. His hope is that enough interest is served by his work to allow the publishing company to want to publish future books he has planned (at least 3 of them). You can check out the details at the webpage above. I submit this believing many of you might find interest in it as I have. As always, holler at me anytime at all for any reason. Thanks, Donnie
Deborah, what a terrific response. Extremely helpful! Thank you much! I've written to the gentlemen as you suggest. I've found some wonderful folks in Jeff County who have helped me. My families are Rogers (Rodgers), Harris, Romaine and Burton. Maybe I'll be lucky enough that my Nathaniel Rogers shows up in one of the papers you reference! Thanks again. Gary
Gary, I have some experience in researching free blacks in Jefferson County and am fairly familiar with available records. I could never locate a register, per se, but have found references to free blacks in a number of county records. Free people of color were required by Kentucky law to have their free papers on their person any time they were away from home. There were some instances when these papers were lost and the freed man or woman had to appear in court and seek new papers attesting to their free status. These court appearances were recorded in the Jefferson County Minute/Order Books. Dr. Blaine Hudson of the University of Louisville extracted all references to free blacks from the court order books and compiled them for others to use. He left a copy at the Louisville Metro/Jefferson County Archives (formerly Jefferson County Office of Historic Preservation and Archives) located on the 6th floor at 810 Barrett Ave. Contact David Morgan at [email protected] For my research project, I found information in: tax lists, census, probate, circuit court case files, deed books, minute/order books, cemetery records, mortuary records, vital statistics, city directories, local history volumes, and newspaper abstracts. I was able to tell the story of a family of free blacks who settled in the area from 1790 forward. The most detailed, personal information came from the minute/order records and the circuit court case files. Pen Bogert, a reference specialist for the Filson Historical Society, has much experience with researching African-Americans, particularly free blacks, and those who were musicians. You may want to contact him for information on what sources are available. His email is [email protected] Wishing you much success in your quest, Deborah Campisano [email protected] ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, February 08, 2005 10:50 AM Subject: [KYJEFFER] "Free People of Color" in Jefferson County > Question... does anyone out there know if free people of color in > pre-Civil War Jefferson County were required to be registered in any way > with the county? I am interested in learning more about what happened in the Fishersville area in the 1860s--1870s, if anyone learns anything. I had a 3rd g-grandfather, Laban Yager, in that area, from 1851 or so until his death in 1871. Regarding Katherine's death in New Albany Clark Co IN. New Albany is actually in Floyd Co IN which is adjacent to Clark Co IN so you may need to look at the Floyd Co records rather than the Clark Co records to find what you're looking for.
