Dear PN, I think it was St. Joseph's. But that was 60 years ago and I am getting a bit weak in the remember department. Dear Listers, It needs stating that some of the kids in the orphanages were not orphans. One of my fellow 6th graders told me that his family simply could not take care of him. I suspect they were in financial straits, or worse, alcoholic straits. P.S.: while not an orphan, the very good writer Hunter S. Thompson died over the week end. He lived across the street from me near one of the orphanages on Bardstown Rd., on Bassett Ave in the 1940's. Most days I just feel like the Jefferson mail list should be the responder to all my email questions....hehe. Here is another I got today. Can anyone help this person out? Thanks so much, Donnie Funeral Directors Who did services (embalming) for blacks? Cemeteries Does anyone know where I might be able to locate a list of Cemeteries in the Early 1900's. With a special interest in the Black ones. That is, other than Greenwood and Louisville Cemeteries. Reform Schools Preferably " Ridgewood & Ormsby Village " this would be in the 1940's.
There is a book out about Ormsby Village. Written by James Settle, a former inmate at the school, titled "The Beanery: A Village Named Ormsby" I bought a copy at WalMart last summer for quite a bit less that it was listed at Amazon.com. Unfortunately, I left it at my summer home. Pat Settle "Donald L. Murphy" <[email protected]> wrote: Reform Schools Preferably " Ridgewood & Ormsby Village " this would be in the 1940's.
Yes there was an orphans' home on Bardstown Rd. in the 1940's and I went to school with some of the kids. Tom PNunn wrote: >Anyone know if there was an orphans home on Bardstown rd. in 1870-1890 ? or maybe this could be Bardstown Ky. either way any info would be greatly appriciated. > > > > >
Anyone know if there was an orphans home on Bardstown rd. in 1870-1890 ? or maybe this could be Bardstown Ky. either way any info would be greatly appriciated.
Hey Lee, Check out this page for the local institutions and what records/holdings they have. It obviously doesn't list everything since I didn't realize the old school records were there, but it's a start anyway. If you call the number, I'm sure they could give you more complete details. http://www.rootsweb.com/~kyjeffer/holdings/holdings.html Just click on the Jefferson Archives link. I'm told that old records such a that are maintained in the basement at the courthouse downtown. There were heavy loss to TB in the early 1900's. Could have been brain TB.

Noticing the recent post, I figured I would pass on this helpful info for those interested in the above cemeteries. You can contact Archdiocese of Louisville Catholic Cemeteries at 502-451-7710 or by fax @ 502-456-9270. They do charge a small fee but provide very helpful bits of info. For info pertaining to either cemetery, you just need to call the above. I am not positive but I think they can also help with Calvary Cemetery also. Also, if needed- I have maps of St. Louis and St. Michaels if anyone would like it in image form. Hope this helps some. If this person is Catholic, I have found that burials from Portland's Catholic cemetery were dug up and moved to one of the "newer" Catholic Cemetery. In the case of mine, it was St. Louis Cemetery, but you might also check on St. Michael's or Calvary. the Catholic Church Cemetery records office is at the latter. They have a computerized system and make it very easy to find burials. I've also ordered lists for certain surnames by mail, for a small fee. It's been a while though, so check first to see if they still offer that service. Good luck!
