    3. Roxanne, And we meet again- last time was in reference to your Fredricks? As for the Portland address, I looked up on the internet and knowing the location, I suspect it may still be there. I might be in that area tomorrow and will check it out. BTW- it is in the west part of downtown Louisville. For all the other locations you mentioned, they are all in the east part of downtown- all which WAS by the old stockyards. The stockyards was recently torn down and used as a new Home Of the Innocents for children. As for the stockyards hotel, seems I have heard of it but not sure if it still exist. If so, I would say it is now called something other than Stockyards. As for the Washington address, I am certain that home would no longer exist as it has all been torn down and revitalized. If I can be of any other help in re: to, please let me know. 1. [KYJEFFER]Portland St in Louisville & the Stockyard Hotel
    2. Hi! The mention of Portland St. caught my eye. My great-grandmother, Celia Armstrong, lived at 3016 Portland in 1915. Does anyone know if that house is still standing? I've been told that my great-grandmother owned a hotel/boarding house called the Stockyard Hotel at one time. I don't know where it was located (though I have a pretty good idea it was near the stockyards ;)). Has anyone ever heard of it? I've looked for Celia in the city directories & she seems to have moved quite a bit. In 1909 she was at 1019 Story, 1917 was 719 Washington, and in 1918, the last place I have for her was 839 E. Main. Are any of these near the stockyards? Are any of these still standing? I'd appreciate any help. Thanks in advance. Roxanne

    1. St. Joseph's Orphanage
    2. To fellow listers I have been reading about the orphanages in Louisville, My fater was a plumber in Louisville. He was also on "board of St. Joseph's. We did a lot of plumbing work at St. Joseph. I was "allowed" to go along on jobs there when I was not in school. I was the "go-fer" go get this tool, this wrench, pipe etc. Anyway when I was of a very young age, I thought that the other kids at St. Joe's had a soft life compared to what I had to do, especially when they were playing baseball and I was working. I got to know later, how incorrect I was, But thats a different story. My fsther arranged for me to spend a day in the orphanage, like one of the orphans. You can safetly say I had a rapid change of attitude. Any way St. Joe's was on Frankfort Avenue 2823 Frankfort Avenue, and they are still there, they have a web site. <www,stkids.org/about.html> there is info there to answer a lot of questions. I lived in the "then East End" on East St Catherine. five houses from The Arch Lee Heady Funeral Home. Like so many of the others I am now living in Florida, Land O Lakes, Florida Joe Zimmerer

    2. Dora Albrecht
    3. I have been fascinated with the discussion on the county archives in Jefferson. What type of old records are available there? Deeds, wills, probates, etc? Is it possible for those of us who live out of state to write and have them look for something for us. I am trying to solve my Solomon Baw(Baugh) mystery. Thanks, Dorie in Texas

    3. You're correct on your view of the Jefferson Archives. It's pretty much self service. Everything you need is on card indexes that tell you what film you need. Once you get the microfilm there are readers and printers there so that you can make a copy. It's not a large area, just a couple of small rooms as I recall. Bob Schlachter >From: "Donald L. 2. I can vouch for the ease and availability of records at the Jeff. Co. Archives. I haven't been there for a few years, but David Morgan was there and still is, and he's a very nice, helpful person. You just sign in and use any records you want. If you can't find them, ask, and you will be given all the help you need. I find it hard to believe that some of you who live in or near Louisville have never been to the Archives. You're missing a great resource. Pat Settle

    3. Amanthus and others: There are probably more, but I know of two sites relating to the old Waverly Hills Sanitarium. The first link below is the "official" site for Waverly. It includes a listing of those who died there and even has it's own message board. http://whsmemorial.tripod.com/id21.html This is the same link as given earlier. It is Ron's site. http://www.waverlyhillstbsanatorium.com/ Both are great for info and photos. The easiest landmark which is not there anymore was St. Joseph Infirmary. This neighborhood was also known as "RAG HILL" because so many of its residents were extremely poor. Also around this area was Swiss Park, where I looked to go as a kid. Even though I have moved to another place, I still drive around the old neighborhood just to bring back memories. Wow, just reading this brought back memories. My youngest daughter was born at St. Joseph's infirmary. I went to Manual with kids who lived on the streets you mentioned. I lived closer to Manual so they tore down my old neighborhood during Urban Renewal progress to make UL more parking spaces. Can you imagine tearing down those old beautiful homes in those tree lined courts to make parking spaces? Pam

    3. Kenny, There is another Tuberculosis Center not far from Dixie, and it is still open, except they care for the profanely mentaly retarded, with horrible body handicaps. It is still called Hazelwood, and the exact name is Hazelwood ICF/MR, and sits on Bluegrass Ave., across the street from the old St. Mary & Elizabeth Hospital { now Caritas Medical Center. It is still owned by the State of Kentucky. I worked there for over 5 years and they to talked about people that had to live there, and die there. Of course it sits on a "hill" like Waverly did.
