    1. Re: [KYJEFFER] FW: George W. Norton and Cave Hill Cemetery
    2. There are two lengthy columns in The Louisville Encyclopedia concerning George W. Norton...very interesting to say the least. I do not recall. Is there specific information being sought? I will be happy to look for it. This book is certainly a "must have" for any serious Louisville historian. Nancy Brinly

    3. Anthony wants me to ask the list if anyone has a copy of this book: “Cave Hill Cemetery, A Pictorial Guide and Its History—2000”, by: Samuel W. Thomas. He did not request such, but if no one owns a copy, would there be anyone available to run by the library to see if George W. Norton is mentioned in it? Thanks, Donnie -----Original Message----- From: Anthony Lange [mailto:awlange@wcc.net] Sent: Sunday, August 13, 2006 6:40 PM To: Donald L. Murphy Subject: Cave Hill Cemetery The location of my statement that Norton was considered the richest man in Kentucky when he died came from the web site: http://www.cavehillcemetary.com/famouspeople.html The cemetery has a book called Cave Hill Cemetery A Pictorial Guide and Its History--2000, By: Samuel W. Thomas. I wonder if any in your group of contacts may have this book and if it contains anything about Norton or his grave marker in order for me to evaluate if the book is worth ordering. A reference in his will about his grave marker is the reason I became interested in researching Norton. The will stated that if his marker was not already constructed at the time of his death, then not more than $5000.00 was to be used to erect the marker. I have no way of knowing if it was constructed before he died or if his family spent the $5000.00 after his death. Perhaps the book has a picture of the marker. It seems to me that $5000.00 would have been enough to build a substantial monument in 1889. I hope I am not boring or bothering you with these questions and certainly appreciate your information thus far. Anthony

    3. No Sherrie. The Rootsweb Mailing Lists and the YahooGroups are two completely separate entities. I suppose it is just a coincidence that they both are updating their software. Someone must have developed something new and everybody decided they had to have it....ha ha. For you guys, there should be no issues. Things just might look a little different in a couple of places, but everything else will remain the same. Rootsweb just wanted you to be aware of them. Now, it appears list administrators will have to get accustomed to a new look when we go to our List Tools page, but I don't anticipate anything that is going to make me any crazier than I already am....hehe. 3. -----Original Message----- From: announce@mail.rootsweb.com [mailto:announce@mail.rootsweb.com] Sent: Friday, August 11, 2006 7:44 PM To: LIST-ANNOUNCE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: RootsWeb Mailing Lists are being Updated Dear RootsWeb mailing list subscriber, We are excited to announce that in the coming weeks, the RootsWeb.com mailing lists will be moving to a new list management system. Why? The new list management system offers updated technology, better spam control, and more efficient hosting of the lists. When? All the lists won't be updated all at once. In fact, once we start it will take us about two weeks to complete the process. We've posted the additional details about the update and a current update schedule at the link below. http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/migrate_sched.html This page can also be found by following the link found on http://lists.rootsweb.com. If there are any changes to the schedule, we'll update this page to let you know. How will it Affect You? Your current subscription(s) will automatically transfer to the new system so there will be no need to re-subscribe to your list(s), however, because the sending and receiving of list email will be handled by a new system, you may notice a few changes to your list(s). Digest subscribers will notice a small difference in the layout, volume and issue numbers of the list digests. The "-L" is being dropped from the "official" list name. This means the "from" address your mailing list emails come from will be slightly different- ListName@rootsweb.com vs. the current ListName-L@rootsweb.com. You may have to adjust your spam filters or put the new address on your "accept" list to prevent it from being caught in your "junk" folder. This sounds like a big change, but it doesn't have to change the way you use the list. Here's why: - You will still be able to send messages to the list using the "ListName-L@rootsweb.com" email address you use today. Additionally, you can choose to drop the "-L" and send your messages to ListName@rootsweb.com. Both addresses will work after the list has been migrated. - You will still be able to subscribe and unsubscribe to the mail or digest mode by sending your request to ListName-L-request@rootsweb.com or ListName-D-request@rootsweb.com as you do today. You will also be able to unsubscribe from the mail or digest mode by sending your "unsubscribe" message to LISTNAME-request@rootsweb.com. The tools that list administrators use to manage their list will also be changing. If you are a list admin, you will be contacted in an additional email on Monday with more details and a link to a tutorial. We're excited about the improvements to the lists because we feel confident that they will ensure that the mailing lists continue to run smoothly for years to come. We appreciate your patience while we make this transition and hope that the RootsWeb mailing lists will continue to be a valuable tool in your genealogy research. Thanks, The Rootsweb Staff ********************************************** You received this message from RootsWeb as a one-time email notification of upcoming changes to the mailing list(s) you subscribe to.

    1. Star Is Descended From Kings, but of course, Most People Are!

    3. Ran across this article from the Washington Post. Thought some of you might find it interesting. It’s lengthy, but interesting.: Star Is Descended From Kings. Of Course, Most People Are Famous Ancestors Adorn Almost All Family Trees By Matt Crenson Associated Press Sunday, August 13, 2006; Page A07 Actress Brooke Shields has a pretty impressive pedigree -- hanging from her family tree are Catherine de Medici and Lucrezia Borgia, Charlemagne and El Cid, William the Conqueror and King Harold II, vanquished by William at the Battle of Hastings. Shields also descends from five popes, a whole mess of early New England settlers, and the royal houses of virtually every European country. She counts Renaissance pundit Niccolo Machiavelli and conquistador Hernando Cortes as ancestors. What is it about Brooke Shields? Well, nothing special -- at least genealogically. Even without a documented connection to a notable forebear, experts say, the odds are virtually 100 percent that every person on Earth is descended from one royal personage or another. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/08/12/AR2006081200 607.html

    3. I wanted to send my thanks to all those on the list who took the time to try and find answers for those persons who email me. The recipients of the data have told me they were impressed with what was found, and thought it quite helpful to them. Hopefully, the information will give them new avenues to study and research. You guys are great! Didn’t want another day to go by without telling you so! Donnie Jefferson County List Administrator
