    1. Re: [KYJEFFER] Gerabronn, Germany & Landauers
    2. Your email enlightened me regarding the changes to names. My paternal grandparents are German and I am having a difficult time finding where they entered the U.S. or where they came from in Germany. Now I have another lead to following. Thank you. 2. Judy Landauer
    3. Dottie, My last name is pronounced: "Land-ow-er". Three syllables. I have wondered about names like Landherr and such but whenever I have looked a little closer at them they don't seem to fit. There's a Landwehr that is Norwegian, I think.... Misspellings I have found are: Launder, Lanndes, Landour, Landar, and Lanndauer. While I have never found the spelling of SANDAUER, I wonder about that sometimes as the "L" can look like an "S", too. Louisville had a very large Jewish population in the mid-1800's and that is why I think my people went there. Some went to live there and others to visit. My husband's great grandfather, Carl Theodore Landauer, was born there in 1865, and married there in 1895, but the family lived in Canton, IL. They only went there, theoretically, to have any religious rituals done at birth, or to get married. I think his was an arranged marriage. I can just see Carl's dad, Moses, writing to his sister, Caroline; "Can you find a nice girl for Carl? When you do, we'll come down and they can get married and we'll bring her back to Canton to live." which is what happened. Carl married Henrietta NEWBURGER 19 Jun 1895 in Louisville and are found back in Canton by the 1900 census. Judy L. 1. Gerabronn, Germany & Landauers
    2. Judy Landauer
    3. Sherrie, That's OK. I thought it might help to have another pair of eyes. The database with Madel is my own from Rootsweb. I would be REALLY surprised (and thrilled) if it that family tree belonged to someone else! ; ) The small town of Gerabronn in Germany is the ancestral home of my husband's family. Most of them came over between 1853 and 1858 when there was a huge long drought in Wurtemburg and thousands fled to other parts of the world. So far I have found one cousin who is descended from Madel's sister, Jeanette, and one family that connects with the SOLOMON/SALOMON family who was also from Gerabronn that married into the Landauers. They were all Jewish, which can play hobb with their first names. For instance: Madel's father was named Hayum Landauer, but he went by the German first name of Heinrich when he did business in Germany (he was a Realtor). When he came to America, he changed it to Hirum, so it wouldn't sound so outlandish, but according to Jeanette's descendant his name was Henry, which is the English form of Heinrich . Likewise his wife, Baier Jandorff, used Becky, or Rebecca. When Jews changed their first names in America at this time, they generally kept the first initial the same, but changed the rest, so Madel could become Marx or Max. If someone didn't know what his original first name was, but knew him as "Mark" or "Marcus", then he could have been buried under a different first name. The last name stayed the same. So you can see why tracing Jewish families can be very challenging! Thank you for listening to my ramblings~ Good luck with your own research! Judy L. 2. Judy, I couldn't find Madel Landauer or Caroline Strauss in Cave Hill Cemetery's database. I looked in the 1840 census nationwide but couldn't find him. 3. Dori, This is the family of the John Bell that I'm searching for. He was the son of John & Mary (Patterson) Bell of Chester Co., Pennsylvania but as an adult he lived in Albemarle Co., Virginia where he served in the Rev. War. He brought his family to Kentucky in 1802. Some sources list 3 marriages for him 1. Anne Tunstall 2. Anna Lilly 3. Mary Henderson. I have found no trace of this second marriage. He did marry Mary Henderson. She was the widow of William Henderson. Her maiden name was Beard. I think that John Bell and his wife Mary may have been buried in the old cemetery in West Louisville. Many of those graves were moved when the cemetery was turned into a park. I may have found them buried in Eastern Cemetery. That cemetery is another bad story but there is a listing for a John Bell there and he once had a headstone. It no longer exists. I have searched several times. Someone told me that my John Bell was actually buried at Long Run Cemetery but I haven't found a gravestone for him there. Thanks for your help.
