My friends - Every now and then, I find it necessary to mention again the guidelines under which the JP List operates. These are all found in the Welcome Message which anyone subscribing to this List receives, but occasionally events dictate the need for a gentle reminder. I have received, over the past few days, several messages from subscribers, expressing concern about some postings made by an individual who was basically passing along information on new sites on the Web for various types of subjects. Unfortunately, these posts were off-topic for this List, as the sites were not connected with the Jackson Purchase region of Kentucky. I had planned to address this matter with the poster today(and I have known the person for a long time), but prior to my being able to do so, she received a couple of private, negative messages about her postings from subscribers to this List. As a result, she has left the JP List. I want to re-emphasize the fact that if anyone has concerns about the appropriateness of a posting to the JP List, those concerns should be addressed to me, and not to the poster of the message(s) in question. It is part of my responsibility, as the host of this List, to deal with those sorts of things. Fortunately, such situations rarely occur. But when they do, I will investigate the situation and take whatever action is appropriate. If flames are involved, either sent to the List, or to the subscriber privately, the flamer can expect to be removed from the subscribership of this List. We have far too many good things to try to do here without getting involved in unpleasantness. The mission of the JP List is to discuss the genealogy and history of families which resided in the 8 counties of the KY JP - that is, Ballard, Carlisle, Calloway, Fulton, Graves, Hickman, Marshall and McCracken counties. We do not get into other counties, such as Trigg, Christian, Livingston and other early western KY counties. There are other lists for those locales. We do see some overrun from the border counties in Tennessee, such as Obion, Sewart, Henry and Weakley counties, since there was so much traffic between the JP counties and these TN counties. But any extended discussion about that area needs to be done by private e-mail between the interested parties. We also try to avoid "chat" on the JP List. I created the KYJacksonPurchase-Lore-L list for that purpose - discussion of family stories, lore of the JP area, and just about anything else within reason. If you have a story about your family's past, please do put it on the Lore List - about 50% of the JP List subscribers also subscribe to the LORE List, so it will get good coverage. As the JP List continues to grow(we now have about 540 subscribers), we have to work a little harder and staying focused and on-topic. I continue to believe that we have one of the finest subscriberships of any List in the 16,000 list RootsWeb group. It continues to be my pleasure to work with all of you, as we go forward in the pursuit of those illusive ancestors who resided in the JP region. Now, with all of that said, back to rootin' -B ============================================================
