I'm still struggling with my g-grandmother Mary Retta (aka Rettie) NANNEY, any help would be appreciated. Here's is what we know about Mary Retta. Mary Retta was born in Jan 6, 1881 in Tennessee. Mary Retta was an orphan, claimed to have never known her father, and her mother died when she was about 4 years old. As an orphan, Mary Retta was raised "from pillar to post", apparently shuffled from one family to the next. She lived for a time with an "UNCLE JIM NANNEY". She also lived with the DICK BOGGAS family. I know nothing about the Boggas family. A relative says she lived in Troy for at least a time. Don't know if this is Troy, KY or Troy, TN. In 1898 Mary Retta Nanney married John David OUTLAND. Although the family lived in Calloway Co, Kentucky, Mary Retta and John David were married in Henry County Tennessee. Her death certificate indicates Mary Retta (NANNEY) OUTLAND died 5-10-1962, and is buried in Elm Grove Cemetery. The informant, a daughter did not know the names of Mary Retta's parents. Another dead end. The last little wrinkle, is when the census taker came around in 1900 to Calloway Co. John David OUTLAND's wife's name was alledgedly "Elizabeth". While I originally believed Elizabeth was his first wife and Mary Retta was the second (the ages suggested two diff women), this conflicts with the 1898 marriage record. Perhaps Retta is a nickname for Elizabeth, or the information was provided by a misinformed neighbor.
