My friends - Today, we are going to continue our look at some snippets from early newspapers in the JP region. I use the word "early" advisedly, because there were newspapers in the region which date back further than those that we are reviewing. However, as is the case with most early newspaper operations, archiving was unheard of, and what we have today has survived, in many cases, by sheer luck alone. I will list below the names of the individuals who appear in these narratives. if you would like a copy of the abstract of the newspaper piece, let me know and I will get it to you. As always, your help in not resending this entire message back to me is greatly appreciated. We know that when dealing with these newspapers, that, in most cases, we must consider them to be derived(or secondary) sources, unless the individual who wrote the article actually witnessed or participated in the reported scenario himself. There are many beginning genealogists who believe that a newspaper item, especially if it is an obituary or a birth announcement, represents the epitome of accuracy. Such is not the case - even today. We can reflect on experiences some of us may have had with present day newspaper reporting of events, and get a little idea of how it was back in the 19th century when there was no rapid communication as we have it today.
