My friends - As we resume data posts this week, we are returning to our review of the 1840 population schedule census of Graves County. In the prior 7 parts of this series, we have worked our way through about one-fourth of the 1840 census, and we will continue with that review today. Subscribers to the JP and Graves-L lists who see a name of interest in the listing below can request the full age enumeration data for that individual by sending a message to me and requesting the data for that head of household. As always, your help in *not* resending this entire message back to me with your request continues to be greatly appreciated. Since we have about 10 new subscribers who have joined us over the past 48 hours, it might be a good time to remind ourselves that in the population schedule censuses in the US prior to 1850, only the name of the head of the household was recorded. The other people living in that household were simply stroked into columns which were age brackets. In the 1830 and 1840 census years, the age brackets, for both males and females, were: 0-5, 5-10, 10-15, 15-20, 20-30, 30-40, 40-50, 50-60, 60-70, 70-80, 80-90, 90-100 and 100 and Upwards. The data report may look like this: 000100001 020100011 The male age enumerations are on the left and the females are on the right. The figures represent the number of people in each age column reported on the census.
