Thanks Pat for your reply I originally sent this to the list and I will answer you via the list as I have learn that some of the statements that are in print are not to be believed. First, Zana Allen is apparently the correct one as the next of kin was a Bob Cannady brother-in-law. Now, I wonder what relationship if any the Allen or Cannady have with the Winchesters. Now, to the Blood River Baptist Church being located at this site. I have a deed from William Winchester deeding two acres of land to Meidith Walton; Thomas Parker; Aaron Hodges Trustees of Blood River Baptist Church. The land was bordered by the Blood River therefore it was on the river and would now be under water. The Winchester Cemetery has not been moved and it a top a hill that may be some distance from the location of the Church on the River. The deed is dated 16 Dec 1851 which I assume was the first church but William was in Calloway by 1832. I can't believe he missed church that many years as he dad give land in 1784 for the present Hillsdale Baptist church in Guilford County, NC. It sounds like different people have different names for the same cemetery. It is now marked on county maps with a county road name Winchester Cemetery Road. To my knowledge there has never been a sign for this cemetery but if the weather is good there will be sign there next Sunday or later if the weather is really bad. The TVA states that two graves were moved to the Winchester Cemetery. A Dick Eaves 1865-1900 from Eaves Cemetery from Calloway Co., KY in 1942 and Gertrude Hawkersmith 1900-1928 from Franklin Co.,TN in 1970 Await Cemetery. No mention of the Parker or Crabtree cemeteries was made by the TVA. As for the Judith Maupin book she list Martha Eveline as a Knight and she was an Eldridge dau. of Elizabeth Winchester and Obediah Eldridge, she left Martha Winchester Knight completely out and list Dr. William Winchester, son of Isaac & Susan Bell Winchester. He was known as a gore doctor and he was not the son of Isaac & Susan Bell Winchester and none of this was on his headstone in 1972 when I first read it and now it may not be readable. This is what I have on the Winchester Cemetery. Gabby Hayes In a message dated 4/26/2005 5:15:32 PM Eastern Standard Time, nanapat@cfl.rr.com writes: Gabby, in the book "Family Records of Calloway County, Kentucky and Adjoining Counties" I found the following information------" Eliza Canady (21 July 1874- 12 March 1967 ) married Zannie Allen ( 21 July 1875 -1910) Eliza buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Henry County, Tennessee. Zannie is buried in Old Blood River Cemetery, Calloway County, Kentucky. The 1965 cemetery book of Calloway and adjoining counties has him buried in the Blood River Cemetery #1 . Following is the information on this cemetery. "Located on the East side of Calloway County, Ky. near Blood River embankment on Kentucky Lake. The first Blood River Church was on this site and organized in the early days of Calloway County". Then I looked at the Winchester Cemetery and all the same people were listed there in addition to William Winchester. In this cemetery Margaret and William Winchester have birth and death dates, These dates were not given in the Blood River Cem. At the end of the listing for the Winchester Cemetery it states that "some graves were moved from Crabtree and Parker cemeteries but marked unknown". In the 1981 Calloway County Cemetery Book by Judith Maupin the same people are listed in the Winchester Cemetery plus 2 additional Kimbro infants , John and Mary Knight are listed ( were not in the old books) and Martha Knight was in the old books and she is not listed in this one. Strange!!!! The 2 Kimbro infants were the children of Roland Columbus Kimbro ( who was the son of John Walton Kimbro and Margaret Elizabeth Eldridge) and Bertha Mae Guerin. I was not able to find anything on the other names. sorry. (The copy of this unofficial history that I have is probably a bad copy of a bad copy, original typed on an old, old typewriter. I cleaned it up a little, but mostly quoted "as is.") There is a list of 28 people(several now dead) who helped with the info in this "History". According to an unofficial history of Blood River Baptist Church compiled by Ann (Shaky) Burkeen in the fall of 1992: "Begin Quote" The "Story of Calloway County 1822-1976" written by Kirby and Dorothy Jennings says in the "Historical Facts" listed in the 1915 Missionary Society, (special edition), that the Blood River Baptist Church was the oldest church, with one hundred years. According to this, it was started in 1815. That was the only thing that was mentioned. If anyone has more info on this 1815 church, please feel free to fill in these missing years. Blood River Church was first established in 1836. It is believed that Bro. David Outland and the Skinners were the ones who got the church organized. They wre kinfolks, and Bro. William Skinner became pastor of Blood River in 1839, and was pastor there until his death in 1872. The church was constituted in 1848. . . located on the east side of Calloway County, near the Blood River embankment on KY Lake, in the Brandon Mill section of the county. . . was a little one room log church. . .seats. . .made of logs. . . . services were held once a month. There was a cemetery by the church, which was called the "Old Blood River Cemetery." The first grave that had a date on the tomb-rock was Martha Knight, died in 1841. Other grave names were John Kimbro, and a Margaret Elizabeth Kimbro, but no dates were on these rocks, a lot of the headstones were big brown rocks with no names, and some were metal markers marked "unknown" moved from Crabtree Cemetery. There was a midnight burial at this cemetery. This guy named Zaney Allen drowned, and had been in the water several days when they discovered his body. The weather was hot, and his body burst, so they had to bury him right away. The body was put in the ground at midnight. Ronald Churchill's daddy was the one who buried him. This was in 1920. Zaney Allen was born in 1875. This cemetery is now called "Winchester Cemetery." When the church was moved out from there, the Winchesters seen after the cemetery, and it was on the Winchester's land, so the name was changed. "Endquote" It goes on to tell of the organization of the Blood River Association in 1870, reports on the death of Bro. Skinner, and then says: "Begin Quote" "From 1874-1886, Blood River was not mentioned in the Association minutes. Some reports say the little log church burned, other say it was torn down. The 2nd Blood River Chruch was moved over close to Workman's Ridge, just west of the ridge. Mr. Nat Parker (father of Bermon Parker, grandfather of Dr. Castle Parker) gave the land for the church to build on. . . was a little one room frame church. . * * * .[statistics are given for 1894] . A cyclone came through and blew this chruch away. "Endquote" It goes on to tell about the 3rd building -- land donated by Aunt Jane Lassiter -- Woodlawn School sat next to the new cemetery, with the church across the road. In 1942, TVA bought land, people moved out, and the church disbanded, was sold to Richard Roberts and he tore it down. In 1948 Blood River Lakeview church came into existence. "Lakeview" was dropped and later the chruch burned. Meetings were held in houses until the new building was built in 1950 on land donated by Gladys Scott. This building is still used for Sunday School rooms. New sanctuary was built in 1990-1991. *********** I'd like to have a copy of that 1851 deed to put in the church records, if possible.
