According to the federal law, this column was supposed to have either a UA if he served in the Union Army, UN for Union Navy, CA for Confederate Army and CN for Confederate Navy. Only for those 50 and older who were born in the US or foreign born males who immigrated before 1865. I assume that this census taker made up his own code which violated the rules.
