    3. DAILY MESSENGER Mayfield, KY March 25, 1907 ____________________ TWO AGED MEN __________ Brothers-in-Law, One Eighty and the Other Eighty-Seven Years Old, Buried the Same Day and Place. Benton, March 23.-Squire S. S. Cope, aged eighty-seven, and Thomas Pace, aged eighty, brothers-in-law, died yesterday, and were buried today at the same graveyard. A large crowd attended the funeral. These were both old land marks of Marshall County and were once well known there. They lived between Benton and the Calloway County line, and both had many relatives, both in Graves and Marshall counties. Their death leaves but a few of the old pioneers in the county who were born 75 years ago or more. They are fast passing to their final reward, and only a few years will pass when not one will be left to tell the tale of "early times" in West Kentucky. The early "brush breaker" is becoming scarce.

    2. Nancy, My family are also the Walkers of Hickman County, KY. My gg grandfather married a Belle Walker. She would have been my step gg grandmother. Her name was Belindia Belle Walker. She was married to George Taylor Irvine. NOW...she may have been married before she married my gg grandfather. Her parents were James Buckley Walker and his wife Paulina Jane Ingram. That is the only information I have now on a Belle Walker. You know that may not be the one you want...but the siblings of Belle is one a James...so it may be the same or it may not be the same Walker woman. There are LOTS of Walkers in Hickman County. Hope you find the information you are looking for. Susie Pollock Union City, TN

    1. Winchester Cemetery
    2. Hello list members:   Recently, I have been in contact with the TVA about the Winchester Cemetery in Calloway County, Kentucky.  They sent me a data base of about 41 graves with a total of 72 graves supposedly in this cemetery.  Of the marked graves, over the years I have contact with others that help me to identify those marked graves as all descended of William and Margaret Winchester.    I need help now to identify the ones that are listed and are in unmarked graves. I found some of the dates don't agree with my research.      Eglantine Knight (I think this is Catherine, Eglentine's sister, and 2nd wife of Emery Knight.  Eglentine married Emery's brother William and went to Missouri where she died.)         Infant Wynn died 1930   Myrtle May Valentine 1922-1924 Edna Estell Valentine 1918-1919   Magdaline K. Vinson 1867-1902  (K maybe for Kimbro)   Virginia Hutson 1916-1918 Infant Hutson  1914-1914 Earl Hutson 1908-1909   Zana Allen 1875-1910   Pearl Allen Kimbro 1881-1904 Lucy Kimbro 1902-1902 Infant Kimbro 1901-1901   Mary Ann Garrison 0-1880   Anna Henry 1885-1917 Infant Henry 1907-1907 Infant Henry 1903-1903   Infant Kimbro 1910-1910 Infant Kimbro 1918-1918   Infant McCormick 1912-1912 I realize most of these are died young but they had parents that may lead to a Winchester ancestry.   Thanks for any help you can give. In a number of Graves County deeds from the late 1800s and early 1900s, such a plat map is referenced in describing the properties being conveyed. I will greatly appreciate any help anyone is able to provide me in finding this map or obtaining a copy of it. Regards, Betty Ravenholt

    1. McCracken County - Confederate Pensioners/Widow Pensioners - Part 1
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - Our Easter recess now having passed, I want to return to a series I started months ago concerning those Confederate veterans(or their widows) who were disabled or indigent, and applied to receive a state pension for their service in the War Between the States. The history of the enabling legislation is interesting in itself, and I will send a special posting on that at some point as we go along. The veterans or widows shown below resided in McCracken County at the time of their applications. In the case of widows for whom the maiden name was given, it will be shown in brackets[ ]. I have no additional information on most of these people, but the KY Archives holds the original applications and microfilm of them is available for a small fee through the LDS Family History Centers. This constitutes Part 1 for McCracken County. Additional posts will bring the names of others who applied from McCracken County. -B ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ McCracken County - Confederate Veterans/Widows Pension Applications Simmons, Samuel R. 1. McElrath court docs
    2. David & Susan McElrath
    3. Hello List, I came across a court case over the settlement of the estate of my great-great-great-grandfather Thomas McElrath on a trip to Marshall County last December. I was able to obtain copies of the documents (some 566 pages) and have transcribed some of the more interesting ones. Thank you to the Marshall County Gen & Hist Society folks for doing all that copying! The documents I have transcribed are 3 judgments, 1 auditor report, and 11 depositions. The depositions are for William James McElrath, Joseph McElrath (2), Caleb Wrather (2), Mary P. and Charles H. Smith, T.F. Swift, Z.B. Magness, Charles Anderson, James Sifford and Dr. W.D. Wyatt, and Simon Lamb. The depositions were taken at various times from 1895 to 1898. These documents have been combined into one file and uploaded to: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ky/marshall/court/mcelrath.txt (thanks Carl Greenfield) The court case was brought by my great-great-grandfather William James McElrath (along with the widow Mary Ann McElrath and administrator W.A. Swift) against Caleb H. Wrather (brother-in-law of W.J.McE) and C.H. Smith (another brother-in-law) and others. At issue was a set of deeds that Thomas had made in April 1892 shortly after his recovery from a serious illness. Thomas had deeded "the Home Place" to Martha Wrather and Mary Smith (Thomas' daughters) and had deeded another tract of land, "the Short Place", to William. Neither William McElrath nor Mary Smith were present when the deeds were drawn up and executed (they lived in Arkansas and Missouri respectively), only the Wrathers. In the end, it was alleged that: a) Thomas was in no mental or physical condition to make an intelligent distribution of his estate, b) undue influence (plying him with whiskey) was applied, c) and that Thomas had previously indicated that William and Mary would get the Home Place and that the Wrathers would get the Short Place. The judge ruled for the plaintiffs, set aside the deeds made by Thomas, provided dower for the widow, and ordered a portion of the land sold and the proceeds to pay court costs with the remainder divided so as to make the children of Thomas equal with each other. Most of the testimony is answering the same questions, but there are some interesting tidbits here and there. You get a little picture of what Thomas McElrath was like, some of his personality, as well as some of the others. There are a couple of "Perry Mason moments" like where the defendants' lawyer questions W.J. McE -- isn't it true that you came back to kill Gabe Jones - and W.J. replying that he had business with Jones and while they were talking a "difficulty" arose and shots were fired. Regards David A. McElrath sdjjjnmc@bellsouth.net
