    1. Spellings on Census and Mistranscriptions
    2. Janice R Freeman
    3. I've learned the hard way that any time a name is spelled with "a" "o" or "u" always check for someone mistranscribing the letter as one of the other two. If the last name is Mc or Mac something always check with and without a space between the Mc/Mac and the other part of such a surname. Ex: McDADE and Mc DADE I finally found my gm COLE indexed as CALE in ME 1930 and my husband's gf McDADE as McLUDE in TN 1920. Part of the "D" was very faint (but I could see it on the copy of the microfilm) and the enumerator was very bad about his "a's" looking like "u's." Fortunately he was living in the small town where he was supposed to have been and I found him. Of course, he was on one of the last pages even so. I've also seen True indexed as Suie. That's a real stretch. Good Luck Everyone ! Janice

    3. Pat, R. S. Murrell was born 25 Sept 1848 in Weakley Co., TN. Parents were J. B. Murrell and Mary Jane Davis who married in Henry Co., TN 27 Nov 1845 and are on the Weakley Co. 1850 census, Dist 13 J. B. married second wife J. A. McCorkle Henry Co. 18 July 1858. They're on the Weakley Co. 1860 census, p. 321, apparently not indexed in Heritage Quest as Murrell. You will also find a biography in Battle, Perrin and Kniffin's History of Fulton County 1885. 1. Hickman County - Circuit Court Cases - 1850's - 1860's
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - Today, we are looking at more circuit court cases from Hickman County in the 1850-1870 time frame. In the past, I have posted some of these cases for Hickman, and these are a continuation of that effort. The listing below reflects the names of the name of the plaintiff(s) and defendant(s). I transcribed these several years ago for many of the pre-1870 cases. The case files are extant for most of these. Perhaps 50% of these cases involve unpaid notes and other minor matters, but the Commonwealth cases(those in which the plaintiff is the Commonwealth of Kentucky) are criminal in nature, and the other civil matters may produce facts or clues about the person or families involved. It is true that for every 10 cases which are reviewed, there may be only one that yields clues, but sometimes that one can be very fruitful in its genealogical bounty. I will continue bring more of these cases as we go along. -B +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Hickman County - Circuit Court Cases - 1850 -1870 Plaintiff(s) Defendant(s) Commonwealth of KY vs. John Johnson (Gaming) " vs. R.M.Seay(Keeping a gaming house) " vs. George Wilson(Selling/trading with a slave) " vs. J.Clark (road out of repair) " vs. E.A.Smedley(Keeping a tippling house) " vs. G.Phillips(road out of repair) " vs. Wm. 2. Ronnie Ellis
    3. I am a descendant of Susan C (Susannah) Walker Hainline from Graves Co, KY and am looking for info on her parentage. After the death of her husband during the Civil War years, Susan Hainline is found in the 1870 Graves Co census at age 44 with her children and a 56 year old tanner named William Walker living with her. Although the census shows her born in KY, 1850 and 1860 census records show her born in VA. William is shown as born in VA. William is found in 1860 at age 41 next door to Susan and her husband B.H. Hainline. In 1850 I find William Walker Sr at age 31 living with a G. and Susan (ages 56 and 53) Walker and a 10 year old William. G., William Sr. and the younger William are all shown as born in VA. It appears (unconfirmed) that William is Susan's brother and G. and Susan are their parents. It also appears they may have been in VA in 1840. I find only a Joseph and Robert Walker in Graves Co, KY in 1840 census records and William Jr. was born there. Susan would have been about 15 at that time and possibly still single with parents. I can find neither Susan or William in 1880, although her tombstone indicates she didn't die until 1890 and was buried with the name Hainline. She was probably with her son William W. Hainline and not counted, as the property was still in the family at that time. Is anyone familiar with this family? Do you know from what county in VA they originated? R Ellis Austin, TX

    1. Jacob Gates family and Peter J. Fore family - Graves County
    2. Is anyone researching the family of the Jacob Gates who was living in Graves County at the time of the 1840 census? He died prior to 1853 when a suit between Allen Moody and the heirs of Jacob Gates was recorded in Graves County Order Book G. The heirs of this Jacob Gates appear, from the order book record, to be Mary J. (wife of Allen Bullock); the wife of D.W. Stark; the wife of William V. Boatright; son J.G. Gates; Mary Gates; Eliza A. Gates; the wife of John Morgan; and Celia (wife of Joseph H. Hudspeth). At least several of these heirs of Jacob Gates were in Prairie Co, AR, by the time of the 1860 and 1870 censuses. I am trying to learn what was the connection, if any, between Mary J., wife of P.J. Fore, and Joseph H. Hudspeth and his wife Celia Gates Hudspeth. The household of P.J. Fore was listed in the Graves Co, KY, census in 1850 and 1860 and was listed in the Prairie Co, AR, census in 1870. In 1865, Joseph H. Hudspeth, husband of Celia Gates, sold land to Mary J. Fore in Prairie Co, AR, shortly after the death of a woman reported as Eliza A. "Hudspeth," but who, I think, might have been instead Eliza A. Gates, sister of Joseph's wife Celia. If anyone is researching this family and is interested in the family of Celia Gates Hudspeth, I will be happy to share what I have found about Celia Gates Hudspeth's descendants. Thanks for any help anyone is able/willing to give me. Regards, Betty Ravenholt

    3. (The copy of this unofficial history that I have is probably a bad copy of a bad copy, original typed on an old, old typewriter. I cleaned it up a little, but mostly quoted "as is.") There is a list of 28 people(several now dead) who helped with the info in this "History". According to an unofficial history of Blood River Baptist Church compiled by Ann (Shaky) Burkeen in the fall of 1992: "Begin Quote" The "Story of Calloway County 1822-1976" written by Kirby and Dorothy Jennings says in the "Historical Facts" listed in the 1915 Missionary Society, (special edition), that the Blood River Baptist Church was the oldest church, with one hundred years. According to this, it was started in 1815. That was the only thing that was mentioned. If anyone has more info on this 1815 church, please feel free to fill in these missing years. Blood River Church was first established in 1836. It is believed that Bro. David Outland and the Skinners were the ones who got the church organized. They wre kinfolks, and Bro. William Skinner became pastor of Blood River in 1839, and was pastor there until his death in 1872. The church was constituted in 1848. . . located on the east side of Calloway County, near the Blood River embankment on KY Lake, in the Brandon Mill section of the county. . . was a little one room log church. . .seats. . .made of logs. . . . services were held once a month. There was a cemetery by the church, which was called the "Old Blood River Cemetery." The first grave that had a date on the tomb-rock was Martha Knight, died in 1841. Other grave names were John Kimbro, and a Margaret Elizabeth Kimbro, but no dates were on these rocks, a lot of the headstones were big brown rocks with no names, and some were metal markers marked "unknown" moved from Crabtree Cemetery. There was a midnight burial at this cemetery. This guy named Zaney Allen drowned, and had been in the water several days when they discovered his body. The weather was hot, and his body burst, so they had to bury him right away. The body was put in the ground at midnight. Ronald Churchill's daddy was the one who buried him. This was in 1920. Zaney Allen was born in 1875. This cemetery is now called "Winchester Cemetery." When the church was moved out from there, the Winchesters seen after the cemetery, and it was on the Winchester's land, so the name was changed. "Endquote" It goes on to tell of the organization of the Blood River Association in 1870, reports on the death of Bro. Skinner, and then says: "Begin Quote" "From 1874-1886, Blood River was not mentioned in the Association minutes. Some reports say the little log church burned, other say it was torn down. The 2nd Blood River Chruch was moved over close to Workman's Ridge, just west of the ridge. Mr. Nat Parker (father of Bermon Parker, grandfather of Dr. Castle Parker) gave the land for the church to build on. . . was a little one room frame church. . * * * .[statistics are given for 1894] . A cyclone came through and blew this chruch away. "Endquote" It goes on to tell about the 3rd building -- land donated by Aunt Jane Lassiter -- Woodlawn School sat next to the new cemetery, with the church across the road. In 1942, TVA bought land, people moved out, and the church disbanded, was sold to Richard Roberts and he tore it down. In 1948 Blood River Lakeview church came into existence. "Lakeview" was dropped and later the chruch burned. Meetings were held in houses until the new building was built in 1950 on land donated by Gladys Scott. This building is still used for Sunday School rooms. New sanctuary was built in 1990-1991. *********** I'd like to have a copy of that 1851 deed to put in the church records, if possible. 1. Re: [KYJP] Winchester Cemetery
    2. Thanks Pat for your reply I originally sent this to the list and I will answer you via the list as I have learn that some of the statements that are in print are not to be believed. First, Zana Allen is apparently the correct one as the next of kin was a Bob Cannady brother-in-law. Now, I wonder what relationship if any the Allen or Cannady have with the Winchesters. Now, to the Blood River Baptist Church being located at this site. I have a deed from William Winchester deeding two acres of land to Meidith Walton; Thomas Parker; Aaron Hodges Trustees of Blood River Baptist Church. The land was bordered by the Blood River therefore it was on the river and would now be under water. The Winchester Cemetery has not been moved and it a top a hill that may be some distance from the location of the Church on the River. The deed is dated 16 Dec 1851 which I assume was the first church but William was in Calloway by 1832. I can't believe he missed church that many years as he dad give land in 1784 for the present Hillsdale Baptist church in Guilford County, NC. It sounds like different people have different names for the same cemetery. It is now marked on county maps with a county road name Winchester Cemetery Road. To my knowledge there has never been a sign for this cemetery but if the weather is good there will be sign there next Sunday or later if the weather is really bad. The TVA states that two graves were moved to the Winchester Cemetery. A Dick Eaves 1865-1900 from Eaves Cemetery from Calloway Co., KY in 1942 and Gertrude Hawkersmith 1900-1928 from Franklin Co.,TN in 1970 Await Cemetery. No mention of the Parker or Crabtree cemeteries was made by the TVA. As for the Judith Maupin book she list Martha Eveline as a Knight and she was an Eldridge dau. of Elizabeth Winchester and Obediah Eldridge, she left Martha Winchester Knight completely out and list Dr. William Winchester, son of Isaac & Susan Bell Winchester. He was known as a gore doctor and he was not the son of Isaac & Susan Bell Winchester and none of this was on his headstone in 1972 when I first read it and now it may not be readable. This is what I have on the Winchester Cemetery. Gabby Hayes In a message dated 4/26/2005 5:15:32 PM Eastern Standard Time, nanapat@cfl.rr.com writes: Gabby, in the book "Family Records of Calloway County, Kentucky and Adjoining Counties" I found the following information------" Eliza Canady (21 July 1874- 12 March 1967 ) married Zannie Allen ( 21 July 1875 -1910) Eliza buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Henry County, Tennessee. Zannie is buried in Old Blood River Cemetery, Calloway County, Kentucky. The 1965 cemetery book of Calloway and adjoining counties has him buried in the Blood River Cemetery #1 . Following is the information on this cemetery. "Located on the East side of Calloway County, Ky. near Blood River embankment on Kentucky Lake. The first Blood River Church was on this site and organized in the early days of Calloway County". Then I looked at the Winchester Cemetery and all the same people were listed there in addition to William Winchester. In this cemetery Margaret and William Winchester have birth and death dates, These dates were not given in the Blood River Cem. At the end of the listing for the Winchester Cemetery it states that "some graves were moved from Crabtree and Parker cemeteries but marked unknown". In the 1981 Calloway County Cemetery Book by Judith Maupin the same people are listed in the Winchester Cemetery plus 2 additional Kimbro infants , John and Mary Knight are listed ( were not in the old books) and Martha Knight was in the old books and she is not listed in this one. Strange!!!! The 2 Kimbro infants were the children of Roland Columbus Kimbro ( who was the son of John Walton Kimbro and Margaret Elizabeth Eldridge) and Bertha Mae Guerin. I was not able to find anything on the other names. sorry. 1. Winchester Cemetery
    2. A few weeks back I obtained information from the TVA and NARA about the Winchester Cemetery in Calloway County, Kentucky. I am now looking for information for these four individuals: An infant Wynn death 1930 Zana Allen b. 1875 d. 1910 Pearl Allen Kimbro b. 1881 d. 1904 An infant McCormick b. 1912 b. 1912 Of the 72 graves in the cemetery, 31 are unknown. Of the 41 known graves I have been able to identify all but the about four to be descendants of William and Margaret Winchester. If anyone can give me a lead, on these individuals I would appreciate any help. My Mother was told that this cemetery was originally the Blood River Baptist Church cemetery and had to be moved by TVA. This is not so, the cemetery was not moved and only a new access road was built by TVA. It is not on TVA land but the road takes one through TVA land to the Cemetery. Gabby Hayes

    2. I am a Galloway when I visited Mayfield I found Galloway road. does anyone have the history on that. I did find the Galloway house and visited them and heard some of the tales of the house. Would love to hear more if anyone has more information. My father was born down the road in a slave shack on the land. My grandma thought she would move into the big house when she married Brown Galloway but they moved into a slave shack and worked the fields. Looking forward. 1. [KYJP] Amanda Lucille Perry & Henry B. Landon
    2. Mike
    3. If you have Amanda Lucille Perry (13 May 1859/Marshall Co., KY - 9 Jan 1918/Graves Co., KY) & Henry B. Landon (25 Oct 1845/Calloway Co., KY or TN - 20 Aug 1896/Graves Co., KY) in your tree I need to hear from you. Some census data has Henry was born in TN instead of Calloway Co., KY, but I have no idea where in TN he would have been born. His parents traveled from NC and settled about a mile South of Backusburg. What roads would have been available for a trip from NC through TN to Backusburg in 1845? Thanks for your help, Mike Landon
