PADUCAH DAILY NEWS Paducah, KY January 1887 (Special Number) ____________________ James M. Ezell, Esq. An excellent likeness of Mr. Ezell will be found on the first page. This gentleman is a native of Calloway County, this State, and was born and reared upon a farm. He first saw the light in 1843 and received his education in the schools of his native county, where he lived until the breaking out of the war in 1861. At the first commencement of hostilities he cast his fortunes with the South and joined the Twelfth Kentucky Cavalry. He served through to the end of the war and participated in some of the most hotly contested battles fought in the Mississippi Valley. He was paroled at Columbus, Miss., in 1865, and came to Paducah and located permanently here during the same year. Mr. Ezell worked as a clerk until sometime in 1874, when he went into business for himself as a member of the dry good firm of Hecht, Ezell & Brian, one of our leading retail houses. He has served in the city council as a representative of the Fifth ward for ten consecutive years.
We were in Murray this summer and the Pogue Library had a map of all the cemeteries in Calloway Co. One of the local funeral homes had provided it for them. I was able to get a map and will send it to whoever does the Calloway Co. web site so it can be posted. Jennifer

Catherine, I found this explanation on one page. 1.. Whether survivor of the Union or Confederate Army or Navy. CA=Confederate Army, UA=Union Army (different census takers marked them different ways). Although this column was for veterans, many of the pages have numbers listed here which appears to be some "figuring" the census taker has done to tally some numbers and has nothing to do with veteran status. The same is true for the next two columns as well. According to the federal law, this column was supposed to have either a UA if he served in the Union Army, UN for Union Navy, CA for Confederate Army and CN for Confederate Navy. Only for those 50 and older who were born in the US or foreign born males who immigrated before 1865. I assume that this census taker made up his own code which violated the rules. Hello, Perhaps someone can give some advice on trying to locate my ggrandfather's grave. I am looking for Wayne S. Smith b. 1833 in TN. He moved to the Trigg County KY area around 1875-1876. They were in the Golden Pond District of Trigg County, KY in the 1880 census. I finally found out my ggrandmother Mahalia/Mahala Paralee Smith died in childbirth in 1882 and the two of them are buried in Savells Cemetery in the LBL area. I cannot find any trace of my ggrandfather after that time. He had a stepson, her son, who stayed in that area named James Kilgore who lived to be 101 and died in Lyon County, KY in 1967. All of his children are deceased and the grandchildren I have reached do not know anything about Wayne Smith. He had a son John A. Smith who was a Ferry Boat or River Boat Captain but don't know about his family as I believe he had all girls. I found my ggrandmother buried by her middle name and am wondering if he might have used another name also. Does anyone have a suggestion as to where I might look since KY didn't keep death records back that far? I do plan on going down there soon but was hoping to have some direction before going. Any help is appreciated. My friends - There have been several posts yesterday and today about the old Winchester Cemetery in Calloway County. I covered this cemetery in a posting several years ago, from the standpoint that the current cemetery location was very near the water's edge created by the Kentucky Lake Project in the 1930's. A number of graves were moved to avoid water intrusion. Shown below is the first "reading" of the cemetery in 1965 by the Calloway County Genealogical Society, as well as the TVA report on relocated graves. There is some confusion about which were moved and which remained, but that is not overly unusual with TVA records. -B ========================================================================= Winchester Cemetery Calloway County, Kentucky Known Burials - 1965 ALLEN, Laney 1875 1910 BUTLER, Mary Elizabeth Oct 26, 1859 - Feb 23,, 1923 DUNN, Ben F. Terry, In June 1981 Judith Ann Maupin published the book "Cemeteries of Calloway County, Kentucky." Interments through 1976 are listed for all county cemeteries. It is indexed by last name only. There are 26 interments listed for Winchester Cemetery. Last names include Allen, Butler, Dunn, Eaves, Garrison, Henry, Hutson, Kimbro, Knight, McCuiston, Valentine, and Winchester. The earliest date listed is 1854 and the latest is 1970. The Calloway County Genealogical Society published a book, entitled "Calloway County Interments 1977-1997," to take up where the Maupin book left off. There are no entries for Winchester Cemetery in this volume. One of our CCGS members has been compiling interments for each year since the book was published. I don't know if there have been any more burials there since 1997. If I can look up something particular for you, just let me know. Becky Jo Jones Murray, KY
PADUCAH DAILY NEWS Paducah, KY January 1887 (Special Number) ____________________ Hon. Wm. C. Clark. This gentleman was born in Orange County, Va., in September 1832. He moved with his parents in 1847 to Clarksville, Tenn., where he lived until early in the year 1850. From there, to quote his own language, he "cut out" for himself, and spent some years in Texas and New Mexico, being engaged in prospecting and mining in the vast named territory. He returned to Kentucky in 1857 and engaged in farming near Florence Station. In 1860 he moved to Charleston, Mo., where he engaged in the hotel business. The war breaking out the next year, he returned to Kentucky again and entered the First Confederate Regiment as a private. He was rapidly promoted for meritorious service to first lieutenant, regimental, brigade and lastly division quartermaster successively. At the cessation of hostilities in 1865, he came back once more to Paducah. Thence he removed to Graves County, where he was elected to the legislature-serving in the session of 1868-69. In 1870 he ran, as an independent, for Congress, but was defeated by Col. Ed Crossland, the regular Democratic nominee. In 1872 he again became a resident of Paducah, and has continued to live here ever since, one of our most valued and honored citizens. For six years he served in the important position of tobacco inspector for this market. Last February he was appointed postmaster by President Cleveland-an office which he still fills with credit to himself and the satisfaction of the community.
Thanks to everyone, but I have pulled up many census pages in all parts of the country and they all have the numbers. I have not been able to pull up any of the ua, un, ca, or cn's. and I think it must have been a code number for the 1910 census. I have had several replies to my question and they are all telling me the same thing but try to find those abbreviations on the census records, I couldn't find even one and I bet you can't either. I tried by pulling up any males born on or around 1840 and did not find anything but the numbers in column # 30 or anywhere else. Catherine
On the 1910 census one of the questions asked was if you were a veteran of the union or confederate army or navy. The answer was given in a number not words. does anyone know what the numbers mean. I suspect that the person I am researching may have served in the confederate military, but no proof. His answer to the question was recorded as the number 9. Does anyone know how to decipher these codes, or know where to look it up? So far I have not been able to find info on this anywhere. Thanks in Advance for any help! Catherine
There was a discussion on this cemetery a few months ago. Do a search of the archives. Right before you get to Beat Farmer, Blood River Baptist Church is on the left. There is no Dunn Road, and it isn't a Y. It is a road to the left named Flora (unless they've changed it in the last few weeks). I was out there less than a month ago. Otherwise the directions are correct. It used to be known as Blood River Baptist Church cemetery, but church was moved. My records are between computers right now, so can't tell you much else. I have some pictures of the cemetery that I can send when I get my records on this new computer. Dear Terry Winchester and List, There is a Winchester Cemetery in Calloway County. To get to it, here are directions. From the intersection of Main Street and 12th Street in Murray, Calloway County, Kentucky, drive Southeast on State Road 121 for 10.4 miles until you reach the intersection with State Road 444, which is a point referred to as New Concord. Turn left onto SR 444, heading first north, then east, and then wiggling northeast. Drive 5 miles until you reach Beat Farmer Road, coming in from you left. Just before you reach Beat Farmer Road, there will be a road on your right called Blood River Church Road. Turn left on Beat Farmer Road, heading generally north. Drive for 0.4 miles where you will come to a fork in the road with Dunn Road. Take a left at the first fork, then the right at the second fork, keeping on Beat Farmer Road which is now heading northwest. From the intersection with Dunn Road, continue on Beat Farmer Road for 0.3 miles, where there will be a fork with Winchester Cemetery Road. Take the left Fork which will be Winchester Cemetery Road. For one mile, the Winchester Cemetery Road will continue northwest and then turn south, ending at the cemetery. This apparent entrance to this cemetery is only 900 feet from the backwaters of the Tennessee River. Along this mile, the elevation of the road will drop from approximately 500 feet to 400 feet above sea level. The road names used in this report are the ones I have on a computer map dated 1998, however, I have found that some road names on this map have changed, or just may be known locally by another name. If you can work with GPS Data, the cemetery is located at 36.5983 Degrees of North Latitude and 88.1169 Degrees of West Longitude. Restated, that is 35 Degrees 35.90 Minutes of North Latitude, and 88 Degrees 7.02 Minutes of West Latitude. I hope that this helps you. James R. Seeking burial location of John A. Hawes, who died February 7, 1929 at Paducah? He was born March 8, 1838. His Death Certificate gives his burial as "Blandville," in Ballard County. I have looked through some Ballard County cemetery books but cannot locate him. Would anyone know where in Ballard County he is buried? Thanks Greg

Spill was better know as Uncle Spill, well known educator in Calloway Co. The present Waters, one room school, now is on the property of Calloway County Park in Murray, KY. Education was extremely important to the Waters family. My Grandma Eula Winbush (Waters)McKeel 1876-1950 married William Horner McKeel from TN. My dear father middle child of 7, was named William Waters McKeel. 1905-1995 John Jefferson born 12/17/1825 My G. G. Grandpa Spill next younger sibling 2/23/1822-d. 1898 Buried Murray City Cemetery, across from My Grandma. My earlier Thornton's were buried nearby in the older section. John Jefferson Waters & siblings: All 9 children were born in Concord, KY. Calloway Co. John J. Waters traveled for the P.M. Rowlett Tobacco Co. and later the J.D. Rowlett Tobacco Co. In those early days tobacco was loaded into wagons and the salesmen went to Mississippi and other states where there was a sale for the crop, and stayed until the load was sold and then returned for another load. In 1873 John J. decided that he would move to Murray so his children would have better educational facilities. He wanted them to go to the Murray Male and Female Institute, which is now known as Murray High School. It was highly rated even at that time. (as I said before our Waters family valued education, and I am related to R.T. Wells (Rainey Thorton, we have great Thornton history, although this may not be your line, R.T. was president of Murray State. ) John J. formed a partnership with Lewis Nanney, and opened a grocery which they operated for some time. John J. continued at least part time with traveling in the tobacco industry In 1875 he had a severe case of Typhoid Fever. He went out before being fully recovered to take a load of tobacco to Mississippi. He then developed pneumonia and died . There are wonderful papers titled John Jefferson Waters papers in the Pogue Library on the Campus of Murray State University. (I hope the library has taken steps to preserve these records. When I first saw them they were in paper files in large cabinets. I was able to remove them and make photo copies.) There is even a Stubblefield room. I have not seen this and plan to, on a future visit. (John J. parents were Reason G. Waters & Susannah Carter "Suckey" Stubblefield, which also takes us down our Coleman line. Funny one of my McKeel Cousins married a Coleman. So I have double cousins all over.) Our families valued our history and wanted it passed on to future generations. This is our job. You and I are part of a wonderful heritage. God's blessing to you and yours, Ann McKeel Anna Lois McKeel, by birth. I did marry a Pratt, after 33 years I left him, and took back my wonderful McKeel name. Looking forward to hearing from you. Also interested in who else makes contact with you. 449 Stonehaven Ct. Here's one for the ladies. I think all of you will enjoy this little jest. Bernadette Subject: What was Jesus? There were 3 good arguments that Jesus could have been Black: 1. He called everyone "brother". 2. He liked Gospel 3. He couldn't get a fair trial. But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus was Jewish: 1. He went into His Father's business. 2. He lived at home until he was 33. 3. He was sure his Mother was a virgin and his mother was sure he was God. But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus could have been Italian: 1. He talked with his hands. 2. He had wine with every meal. 3. He used olive oil. But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus could have been a Californian: 1. He never cut his hair. 2. He walked around barefoot all the time. 3. He started a new religion. But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus could have been Irish: 1. He never got married. 2. He was always telling stories. 3. He loved green pastures. But the most compelling evidence of all - 3 proofs that Jesus could have been a woman: 1. He fed a crowd at a moment's notice when there was no food. 2. He kept trying to get a message across to a bunch of men who just didn't get it. 3. And evenwhen he was dead, He had to get up because there was more work to do. Amen!
