    1. [KYJacksonPurchase-L] Thank you a million
    2. Kenneth Banasiewicz
    3. Bill: I am new to this site and was checking out you Puzzel page when I noticed the Images Page. I clicked on Dexter School as I knew my Smotherman once lived in Dexter. To my amazement and excitement my Great Grandmother and ALL of her brothers and sisters are pictured. I have E-mailed the lady who owns the picture and begged (at my expense of course) for a good photocopy of the picture. I have already gotten gold from this site. There are no adequate words to thank you for this gem. Marsha Valentine Banasiewicz (great granddaughter of Amy Smotherman (cope) Fifth row, 5th from left. th from left.

    1. [KYJacksonPurchase-L] Skills Puzzler # 23 - Solution
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - I am stopping by for a moment to give you the solution to the latest Skills Puzzler. Only 11 responses were received on this one, with one person nailing it and several others who were in the right area, but not quite sure of the specifics of the explanation. This one was somewhat complex. To recapitulate, we had a situation in which a researcher had come to me some years ago and indicated that she was descended from one George Anderson. George is found in the 1840 census as head of his own household. An old family Bible was partially extant, which gave a birth record for George and some other children, but the portion where the parents' names were recorded was torn off and missing. Only the name "Olaf" could be seen at the edge of the tear. There was a notation that this family had come from Norway in the 1820's. The problem which had stymied the descendant was the names of the parents. No "Olaf Anderson" was found in the census of the county in which George resided, or in any of the surrounding counties. Our quest was to determine why the descendant of George could not find the parents, and where should she be looking. In order to resolve this problem, we have to know something about the patronymic naming system, which was used in Scandinavia, Holland, and some other places, and in some cases, such as Norway, it persisted right up into the 20th century. Under that system, male children's surnames became the given name of the father, with the suffix "sen" ("son" in America) added. Daughters had the suffix "datter"(in the Norwegian case) - "daughter" in America - added. Knowing about the patronymic system, then, we can start looking for a potential father for George Anderson with a given name of "Anders" (the second "s" was usually dropped). We want to look simultaneously for a connection with the name "Olaf", since it was in the Bible record. Living two households away from George was Anders Olafson, whose age enumeration made him a candidate to be the father of George and others. From that point, it became a fairly simple matter to examine other records, looking for Anders Olafson, and documentation was found which pegged him as the father of George. Anders' wife was Kristina Hansendatter, or "daughter of Hansen". If you have never experienced the challenge of working with patronymics, you have some fun ahead of you. I use that word "fun" advisedly, because it can sometimes be very frustrating to have to basically change surnames with each generation. But by being aware that the system of patronymics was used in various countries, we do have a tool to help us track them in America. -B ===========================================================

    1. [KYJacksonPurchase-L] New Subscriber says Hello
    2. Kenneth Banasiewicz
    3. Hello: My name is Marsha Banasiewicz and I just subcribed to this mailing list. I am climbing my family tree and felt this would be a good resource and hopefully I will can be helpful, also. I grew up in Puryear Tennessee and moved to Paris just before my Senior Year. I used to spend a couple of weeks every summer with my granny, just outside of Hazel on S 641. My Great Grandfather and his brother built that house when my grandfather was just a boy. The house has long since been sold.. I love the area and have strong ties to it even though I now live in Alabama. My lines are Wilson/Cope/Smotherman/Pace in Kentucky Valentine/Brizendine/Humphreys/Mathis/Taylor in Henry County. I also have been told that some of the Taylors were from or moved to Calloway county. My great great grandma was Missouri Elizada Taylor who married Thomas Staten Valentine. If any of these also belong to you, I'd love to swap info. My family is from is predominantly from Calloway, Graves and Whatever Aurora is in. Also, large bunch in Henry County, TN. Many lived in or near Hazel which as you know is straddles the line. Many also lived in Pottertown on land which contained the Barnett Cemetery (Smotherman/McDaniel). The cemetery sits alone now and I don't know who owns the adjoining land. One of my grandmother's cousins or uncles (can't remember off top) ran a still out of there. When the feds would try to catch him he would take his still to Thurman's store and hide it until they gave up. Clever, No? (HAHA) And he never got caught!! Sorry my "resume'" has been so long, but wanted to introduce myself. I look forward to corresponding with you. Marsha in Alabama sponding with you. Marsha in Alabama

    1. [KYJacksonPurchase-L] Skills Puzzler # 23 - More Census Clues
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - We will end this week's posting with another in the Skills Puzzler series. In past Puzzlers, we have seen how important it is to know the ins-and-outs of census records and where to look for the lesser known clues. Today's Puzzler integrates several areas of knowledge into the census arena. Here was the problem as it was presented to me about 5 years ago: a descendant of one George Anderson contacted me about a brickwall problem she was having in trying to find the parentage of George. George appears in the 1840 census as head of his own household. A family Bible survived - partially - and indicated that George Anderson was born in 1820 in Norway and there was a notation that the family had "made the crossing" in 1826. Unfortunately, the upper part of the first page of the Bible which held the family record was torn and missing. Only the one name "Olaf" remained in the area where one would expect to find the names of the parents of George. Olaf sounded like a good Norweigian name, but a search of the 1830 and 1840 census of the county in which George and his brothers lived did not locate an Olaf Anderson, nor did a search in all of the surrounding counties, or in the census index. But he *was* there - in the same county with his son George. The question before the house is this: why was the descendant unable to find George's parents, and where on the census should she have looked to find them? If you want to express your thoughts on this Puzzler, you can send them either to me privately, or to the List. I will post the answer on Saturday or Sunday. As always, there will be no data posts per se over the weekend, but I expect to be back with another in the Jackson Purchase Land Grants series at some point. -B ============================================================

    1. [KYJacksonPurchase-L] cemetary in Graves
    2. 20 some years ago, my mom and dad (who has passed on) stopped near my dad's old family farm, which I believe was located south of Dublin and West of Pryorsburg, probably south of 58, west of 1283, just east of the Hickman county border. On the property, there was a cemetary up on a hill, but they were unsuccessful in visiting it as it was raining, full of mud, and covered with undergrowth. Is anyone familiar with this old cemetary? I think there might be some relatives there; this property was known as "the old Smith farm". My dad's family was Clark. Thanks, Dotti

    3. Hello My name is Leslie Daunter and I am jane98's granddaughter. My grandmother asked me to unsubscribe her from all of her lists until she is moved into her new home. Please take jane98@primary.net off of your list. Thank you. -----Original Message----- From: Stuart Armstrong <stuarta@aros.net> To: KYJacksonPurchase-L@rootsweb.com <KYJacksonPurchase-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Tuesday, July 20, 1999 7:24 PM Subject: [KYJacksonPurchase-L] Jackson Purchase Surnames > I am researching several surnames in the Jackson Purchase, particularly in the area along Clarks River near the Calloway-Graves county line, and near Kirksey, Backusburg, Vulton Creek, and Farmington, but some of these families moved to other places in the Purchase, some to Paducah and some to Marshall County. Rather than list the surnames here, I suggest you review my web page -- address below. If you see any families that interest you, please contact me or put a note on this list. I have more information that is not on the web page and will be happy to share it. > An incidental note to the list manager: I have discovered an Utterback website that has more than 2500 Utterbacks and 20,000 related individuals. Are you familiar with it? I am related (indirectly) to the Utterbacks through Andrew Preston Utterback of Murray Kentucky, son of Harrison Peyton Utterback and Rachel Ozier Caldwell, who married into my Smith family ancestry (Jane Smith dau of William Armstrong Smith Jr and Nancy Brinkley) on 15 Jan 1857. The Utterback line is traced to Germany where it is spelled Otterbach. > Another question. On some other lists I subscribe to, the list address is the default reply-to address, so that when I click on reply, my reply goes to the whole list by default. So everyone gets the benefit of any discussion unless it is deliberately taken off-list by replying in private. It seems to result in considerably more discussion and sharing. Do you have any comments about this? It also means that if a person subscribes to the list, posts a query, and then unsubscribes, he probably won't see any of the replies. > >Stuart Armstrong >mail to: stuarta@aros.net >web page: http://cgi.aros.net/~stuarta > > >==== KYJacksonPurchase Mailing List ==== >Check out the Jackson Purchase Images Page at http://www.rootsweb.com/~kygraves/temp/JPL.htm >for landowner survey maps of portions of the Jackson Purchase, plus other images. 3. Bill, It would cerainly help my inbox accumulation if subscribers sent requests for information from lists directly to you rather than entire list. I realize it might be helpful to know who was researching what surnames, but it clutters others' mailboxes and those posts are usually done in a separate notice. Also, many new subscribers are not capitalizing surnames which truly helps in ready queries. Anne

    3. My friends - Today, we are returning to our review of early Hickman County Marriages. In prior posts, we have advanced to the year 1836, and we will continue with that year in today's post. If you see a marriage which is of interest to you, and you would like the full dataset for that marriage(which, unfortunately, generally has only the date of marriage, although there are a very few with a witness named and an occasional consent), let me know and I will get that information to you. And, as always, your assistance in not resending this entire post back to me with your request is greatly appreciated. 2. My friends - Here is an interesting bit of information on a JP Church, provided by our good friend, Bette New Sousa. -B ============================================================ Bill, I tried to post this to the Church's list, but was bounced back..Just thought the list might find the information helpful..I also have the partial list (159) of the original members...My New's, Johnson's, Tibbs and Jones were on the list..Very exciting find..Found a "cousin" on line that had the Dublin bible..Had my Gr.Gr. Grandmothers birth and death date...(Angeline (Tibbs) New..very exciting...Thanks again for everything.. Bette (New) Sousa THE KNOB CREEK CHURCH OF CHRIST The Knob Creek Church of Christ is about three mile's due east of Dukedom on the north side (Kentucky) of the Kentucky-Tennessee state line near the Pinegar Graveyard. it has been in this present location only a few years, being moved from the second location. Its house is a beautiful modern brick building. As for the second location, it was only two miles east of Dukedom on the south side (Tennessee) of the Blackamore Creek for some 50 years. The first location is farther east of either of these two sites, on the Knob Creek, the location from whence the name. probably the second site was the result of moving closer to Dukedom as the Dukedom Christian Church was not very strong and Knob Creek could serve both. The old ledger book that coveres most of the history of the Church is in the possession of Roy Puckett, Secretary of the Congregation. For the beginning, the old ledger book records. "Church Book of Knob Creek Congregation--Constitution of the Church of Christ Worshipping at Knob Creek, Graves County, Ky, Constituted on the Fourth Lord's Day in June 1834 by Elder John H. Parkhill, Congregated in Order to Keep the ordinances of the lord's house. The New Testament being Our Only Rule of Faith and Practice, with a true list of accessions with their Names and Manners of Reception--Where God Speaks let man Speak, and where God is Silent let man for ever hold his Peace."
