    1. [KYJacksonPurchase-L] The Missing Skills Puzzler
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - It appears that a good many of you did not receive my post yesterday, which contained the latest Skills Puzzler. I have found out today that there was an Interenet hub problem yesterday, and I suspect that it was responsible for the mail not reaching everyone as it should. Even today, I received another bounce message with 44 of our List subscribers who use apex.net on it. In that case, since it has been happening all week, I am not sure if it is a hub problem or a problem within the apex.net organization. In any event, I am going to resend the Skills Puzzler. If you received the first one, then now is the time to hit your delete button. If you did not receive it, it is shown below. -B ============================================================ Skills Puzzler # 25 - Church Records > >Over the years, we will work with church records in one form or another. Our Puzzler is based upon a problem connected with such >records. This particular problem occurred in Louisiana, but it could happen >anywhere that there is a large Catholic presence. > >A genealogist was researching her early Louisiana forebears, who were >Catholics. The parish priest of Natchitoches Parish(the word >"Parish" in the latter case is a civil term, equivalent to "County", while >the former use of it is a religious term)left some excellent records, which >clearly indicate that the priest baptized several children, over several >years, that were a part of the researcher's family. The priest even had >something unusual for that day - pre-printed forms on which he could fill >in the blanks. The forms read like this "I, Father John Baptiste of the 2nd >parish in Natchitoches, Louisiana, did on the ------- >------of the year of our Lord -------- immerse and baptize------------, >child of------------ >------------and grandchild of ------------------------------------." > >Our problem occurs when the researcher began to look for other records in >Natchitoches Parish for this family. 2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - I am dropping by today to update the JP Homecoming figures and to let you know that another file is now ready in the continuing series on land grants in the Jackson Purchase region of KY. First, the JP Homecoming figure is now at 64, as we continue to aim at our minimum number of 75 subscribers committed to attending such an event, if it comes to fruition. The JP land grants file for today covers part of the surnames which begin with the letter "T", specifically the surnames Taylor, Tharp, Travis, Tarver and Tanner. The majority of the file is taken up with the surname Taylor. If you would like a copy of this file, please let me know by requesting file *LG876*. I will send it to you as a plain text attachment to an e-mail unless you specify that you need it as a *straight* e-mail message(which will often skew the columnar alignments). You will receive the complete file. Time constraints do not allow me to go into the file and extract the data for a single surname. To see which JP land grant files are available, go to the web site: http://www.rootsweb.com/~kygraves/JPGrants.htm No one has yet taken a stab at the latest Skills Puzzler. It is a difficult one to work with - about a 9 on our scale of 1-10 in difficulty. I will return tomorrow with the solution. -B ============================================================

    1. [KYJacksonPurchase-L] JP Homecoming Update & No Data Post Tonight
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - I have been pretty well immersed in some activities today, which have prevented me from providing responses to your requests for data from yesterday's Marshall County data post. Since that task is going to take a fair chunk of time this evening, I am going to refrain from making a data post today. Tomorrow, we will close out the week with either an installment in the "Tips" series or a Skills Puzzler. I'll close with the latest number on the JP homecoming interest survey. Three more folks have said they would like to attend, which brings our total to 55, so we continue to go up. I will continue to keep you updated on these numbers. Until tomorrow........ -B ============================================================

    1. [KYJacksonPurchase-L] Update - JP Homecoming
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - I thought I would drop in and give you the latest update on responses concerning the possibility of our having a Jackson Purchase "homecoming" event next year. When I checked my e-mail this morning at 7 AM, I had 127 messages waiting. I receive about 600 e-mail messages a week, but this was a large number for that early in the morning. Many of them were responses to the homecoming event. As of this moment, we now have 52 subscribers who have responded with an affirmative, "I'll be there", message. If we add family members that were mentioned in the responses, this brings the current total to 59. There were also 9 others who indicated that they would "like to attend", but could not yet commit, for various reasons. Realistically, we can expect about a 10% reduction in attendees at the event, if this goes forward, due to last-minute changes in plans, etc. We may well reach the minimum 75 attendee mark. I'll continue to keep you posted as the responses come in. I'll be back later with today's data posting. -B ============================================================

    3. We recently passed through the Mayfield area and visited the Rozzell Cemetery looking for the gravesite of William M. Thomas and his wife Sarah Snow Thomas. We didn't find them, but since have learned that there is an Rozzell Addition. We didn't see this anywhere around the church and cemetery we visited. Can anyone give me some information on this addition and its location. Thanks. Doloros
