Bill, Please send me the information on: CHUNN, Garrett C. BAZZELL, Nancy Jennifer Pursell
My friends - Today, I am beginning a new series to cover the 1840 census of Graves County. We have done, or are presently reviewing, several of the other 1840 census population schedules for other counties in the JP, and since there is a great deal of interest in Graves County, we will start looking at the 1840 census for that county. If you see a name which is of interest, and your would like the complete age enumeration for that household, let me know and I will forward that information to you. As always, your help in not resending this entire message back to me with your request is greatly appreciated. As an FYI, RootsWeb has developed a new search engine for the SSDI, which will soon be announced. In beta testing(in which I participated), the system works very well indeed. Be watching for the announcement in the next issue of RootsWeb Review, which we all receive. -B ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Graves County - 1840 Census - Heads of Households - Part 1 Story, Jesse Dunnin, Solomon Thompson, John C. Hi Everyone, My great grandfather, William Peter Denny of Calloway and McCracken Co., KY, kept journals in the 1860's. I am trying to place people he mentioned into families. Any help you could offer on the Lynn/Shelton/Sheldon and Garnet Families mentioned below would be appreciated. Regarding the Lynn Family In the 1862 Journal he mentions Molly Lynn as one of the girls attending a party at Sycamore Grove. I do not know where that is or to which family she belongs. In the 1863 Journal Mr. or Mrs. or Ms. Lynn are referred to several times but without first names. Sunday the 5th of July 1863 "...came to Billingsleys went to Lynns got sum appels...." Monday the 13 of July 1863 "...went to Mr. Lins to get a mule...." Saturday the 25 of August 1863 "...Henry and I went to Lins and got sum apels. went to the river saw Mr. Derington...." In the 1864 Journal we get first names on many small incidences but I can't put the family together so any help will be appreciated. Becky Lynn Clay Lynn Molie Lynn Newton Lynn Mr. Lynn Mrs. Lynn. The Shelton/Sheldon names do not start appearing until 1864. Fannie Shelton/Sheldon Mollile Shelton/Sheldon Mary Shelton/Sheldon Betty Shelton/Sheldon Mr. Shelton/Sheldon Mrs. Shelton/Sheldon Ms. Shelton/Sheldon Many times they are mentioned with the Lynn's. Of interest is the Dec. 31, 1864 entry. "we sat about til evening John Ellis and I got half galon of molases and mad sum cam at Mr. Youngs I went with Mis Molie Shelton John with Mis Molie Lynn Clay Lin with Bety Shelton. Mrs. Lovelaces too boys and Woband his mis was thare Nute Lynn was thare we had lots of fun the moon shone too or three hours its clear and very cold. Mary Agness Garnett Molie Garnet Mary Garnet Mr. Garnet, Ms. Garnet (I realize the Mr. and Ms. is impossible, but the others you may recognize) The entries from the journal are: Sunday Oct. 16, 1864 I and Reny went to the byah (Bayou Church) to a funeral. Mis Fannie Pegrams funeral was preached. Mr. Williams and Harrrington preached. Tell B. and Lien Allen eat Dinner hear and Marian Oldham was here we all went to Sunday School. My friends - Due to another commitment this evening, my computer time has been significantly reduced, so I will use what time I have to finish responding to requests from last night's data posting. We will resume data posts tomorrow. Until then........ -B ============================================================
We'll be gone for a while on a trip.
My friends - Today, we are going to resume our review of early Calloway County marriages. In the prior 29 posts in this series, we had worked our way up from 1823 to 1839, and we will continue with 1839 in this post. If you see a marriage for which you would like the complete set of data(which usually includes the date of the license, date of marriage, who performed the ceremony and the consents, if necessary), please let me know and I will get that information off to you. As always, your help in not resending this entire message back to me with your request is greatly appreciated. I want to take a moment to tell those of you who have sent the many messages I have received about our JP Homecoming event next year, that I have read all of them, have printed most of them and have taken note of their contents, even if you did not receive an individual response back from me. I'll be posting more about the JP Homecoming later this week. I hope to have some time frame choices to offer, based on what I have received so far from a number of you relative to when we might want to schedule the event. More about that later this week. -B ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Early Calloway County Marriages - Part 30 Quisenberry, William A. Thompson, Katherine S. I am searching for any records on John H. and Mary GORE RIGGS who died 1897-1899 in Fulton County, KY. They had several children but I have records of only 2: Claude RIGGS, b. 13 Feb 1884 in KY, d. 28 Nov 1952 in Clinton, Hickman Co. KY. His death certificate is posted on the Hickman County Archive page. He was a widower, the informant was Dan GORE, and he was buried in Clinton Cemetery, the only RIGGS burial there. The youngest child was James Lonnie RIGGS, b. 22 Mar 1893 in Moscow, Fulton, KY. He died 6 Dec 1966 in Mangum, Greer Co., OK and is buried in the Brinkman Cemetery. His death certificate is posted on the Fulton County Archive page and on the Greer County Archive page. (I am archivist for those 3 counties.) Lonnie was raised by his grandparents, William George and Sarah Eveline JENKINS RIGGS in Benton Co., TN. Lonnie wrote to me in 1964 that "my brothers and 1 sister are all past away". It was hard for him to write but he helped me all he could. The RIGGS family is related to my husband's HILL family of Decatur County, TN. Any help will be appreciated. Does anyone have any information on the family of Charles Wright Carneal (b. 1865 d. 1943) who married Lou Denny (1869 d. 1930) in 1891? They probably lived around the Paducah area in KY. I would like to know if they had any children and the parents or siblings of Lou Denny. Many thanks! Murray seems a great place for the gathering. The Pogue Library is a great place to do research. I try to go there every time I am back "home". Information is there about not only about the Jackson Purchase counties, but also on the states from which settlers migrated into the Jackson Purchase area. My vote is for Murray. It is also for an INDOOR gathering. Although I was born and reared in Calloway, after many years away, the heat and humidity are pretty uncomfortable for long periods for someone not used to it. Ann
My friends - I want to give you latest numbers as we look toward a Jackson Purchase Homecoming event. As of now, we are standing at 71 subscribers who have responded affirmatively with an intention to be present when such an event occurs in the year 2000. I think we will now easily reach our starting goal of 75. If we count family members, as well as subscribers, we are past the 80 mark. I think it would now be worthwhile for us to discuss dates. I have had private messages from many of you, with thoughts about that. We do have the Weakley County List's gathering occurring over the first few days of September of 2000, and some effort could be made to "piggyback" on that, although the starting of schools and colleges may make that unworkable, from the standpoint of those who teach and those who have children who must return to school. We will very likely want to avoid the week in June in which the Samford University Institute is held, as well as the week in July when the NIGR is held(I'll get those dates shortly). A few folks have said that they would prefer to come when the weather is not too hot. So, we have preferences all over the board, as is natural. In the near future, I would suggest that a small "committee" be formed to handle the planning and arrangements for this gathering. We will need at least one person who resides in the Jackson Purchase region to be on such a committee(and more than one if we can have it). There will also have to be some research done into the matter of whether there will be a need for a small fee to be paid by each of us to provide for a banquet or other such activities. We should also be giving some thought to where the "hub" of the gathering might be. Murray comes to mind at once because of the Forrest Pogue Special Collections Library at Murray State University, in which many of you may wish to do some research. Murray also has a fair number of hotel/motel rooms available. Of course, that is only a suggestion. We have much to do, and I look forward to seeing discussion on this topic as we go along. -B ============================================================
My friends - Before this weekend is gone, I want to drop by to give you the solution to the latest Skills Puzzler concerning church records. We had a good number of people who tried this one - 29 at this point - and just about everyone had at least the starting point for the solution. As you will recall, the scenario was one in which a researcher had been trying to find records on her family in an area in LA in which she had found some baptismal records for this family. The church parish was head quartered in Natchitoches Parish in LA. The word "Parish" in this latter case, however, is synonymous with "County", as it is a civil distinction and has nothing to do with the church parish. One of the key clues that escaped the researcher was the fact that the Red River running through Natchitoches Parish was an ideal "highway" on which to travel. As a result, the priest from the church parish was regularly travelling down the Red River to other civil parishes which were still in the jurisdiction of his own church parish area, which was much larger than the area covered by the civil parish, or "county" of Natchitoches. The priest used his pre-printed forms and paid scant attention to the fact that he was baptizing children in other civil parishes in LA - because he was still within the confines of the area of his church parish. Our researcher had, in fact, had the foresight to check Winn, Grant, Red River, Vernon, Sabine, Bienville, Rapides and even DeSoto parishes, which adjoin Natchitoches Parish, but found nothing. However, following the Red River watercourse, her family was found in Avoyelles Parish, which does not adjoin Natchitoches Parish, but the Red River flows through it and the northern tip of it was still within the priest's church parish boundaries. This problem was made more difficult by the fact that the word "Parish" is used in LA in two different contexts, but it still is an interesting pointer to help us recognize the fact that we need to always be aware of the differences in geographic scope of the land areas covered by church jurisdictions as opposed to those arbitrary lines which mark off the boundaries of civil jurisdictions, such as counties. -B ============================================================
Hi Everyone, In my great grandfather's journal, on the date Sunday, Sept. 3, 1865, his entry reads, "We went to a singing at New hope Church thare was sevril from this neighborhood. Mis Lynn and Mr. Young and his wife and Bety Shelton and Mr. Garnet was thare. I went home with Betty Shelton an we all went to Garnets to Dinner We then went to singing at Ditney Hill. I stayed all Night at Mr. Lynns its bin very warm to Day." Does anyone know where Ditney Hill is located? I am guessing it would be near the New Hope Church. Or near the home of a Garnet Family (any kin out there?) However, I do not know where they are either. Thanks in advance for any helpful advice and information. Is any one searching the Guill line? I'm looking for any information about my grandfather and g grandparents. Marriage/ death records or anything you might have. William Linzic Guill & Mary Elizebeth Upchurch. Maybe married in Tenn.??? They had a son, William Joesph Guill born 6/21/1885 or 1886 (hard to make out if it is 85 or 86) in Dublin, KY. Graves county. ( names are copied how they are spelled on his social security records) I'm assuming they lived around this town and my grandfather went to school near by. Does anyone know what schools, churches where near the town of Dublin. Bill gave me some info on census records for 1870 and found a William L. listed at 2 years old, son to Josiah 25 years old and Eliz. 28 years old. also lists other children: Georgia Ann 8 Mary F. 6 Luther A. 1 Bill thinks this could be my family. Thank you Bill! Any information anyone has would be grateful. My email is Lyn_Mayer@msn.com Thanks so much.

My surnames are: HARDY, CRUCE, MORRIS, CHEATHAM,GRAHAM, JENNINGS. I am looking for information on the marriage of Sam H. Hardy to Elizabeth Jane "Lizzie" Cruce 26 Dec 1885 in Obion Co. Tennessee. Would their marriage application have Lizzie's parents names on it? Also looking for birth records of their son's Elbert Hardy b. 1896 and Lonnie Hardy, b. 1893 in TN. Sam H. Hardy is the son of Joseph H. Hardy and Nancy Graham Hardy of Fulton Co. Kentucky. Sam was born in Kentucky and Lizzie was born in Tennessee. I don't have a clue as to who Lizzie's parents were. I have been told by another researcher that there was an Elbert and Lonnie (Cruce) listed in an old census in Obion Co. Tennessee. Since these are the names of Elbert Hardy, my grandfather, and Lonnie Hardy, my g-uncle, I feel there could be a connection. Sam and Lizzie seemed to have moved back and forth between Fulton Co. Kentucky and Obion Co. Tennessee as one of their children was born in Kentucky and the rest in Tennessee--they had two older daughters, Bessee b. 1888 in Kentucky and Anna b. 1890 in Tennessee. Sometime before 1900 they moved to Clay Co. Arkansas. They were listed in the 1900 Clay Co. AR census. They had two of their younger children in AR.-- Clyde and Pearl. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Linda
