    1. [KYJacksonPurchase-L] Early Calloway County Marriages - Part 31
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - Tonight, we will be resuming data posts with another installment in our series on Early Calloway County Marriages - one of our most popular series. In the prior 30 posts in this series, we have moved forward from 1823 to 1839. We will finish the year 1839 in this post, and begin the year 1820. If you see a marriage which interests you, and you would like to have the full dataset for that marriage(which usually includes the dates of license and marriage, who performed the ceremony and the consents, if required), please let me know and I will forward that information to you. As always, your help in not resending this entire message back to me with your request is greatly appreciated. Our good friend, Sam Tarry, has reminded me that the DeLorme Atlases are superb tools for any genealogist, as they show all of the country roads, streams, creeks, and other topographical data which are invaluable for use in locating the area where an ancestor may have lived. These atlases by DeLorme are available through amazon.com and barnesandnoble.com on the Internet. They do not yet have all of the states available, but Kentucky and Tennessee are now offered, and, as DeLorme completes other states, they will be added to the list of offerings. -B ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Early Calloway County Marriages - Part 31 Cox, Jesse Manley, Hannah Edwards, David Edwards[sic], Sarah Caroline Holland, William Miller, Martha Jane House, Robert Harrel, Elizabeth Butler, Thomas Massa, Eda W. 1. [KYJacksonPurchase-L] Tip # 41 - The Genealogist's Personal Library
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - I hope your holiday has been pleasant thusfar. Rather than posting data today, I am going to send out another in the "Tips" series. Over the 21 months that the JP List has been on-line, I have been asked a number of times about what sorts of general reference materials might be useful for a genealogist to own. I am also asked about more specific items pertaining to the Jackson Purchase region. In the area of general reference works that would be useful to any genealogist, whether novice, experienced, or professional, I suggest the following: Everton Publishers: The Handy Book for Genealogists Greenwood, Val: The Researcher's Guide to American Genealogy. Mills, Elizabeth Shown: Evidence! Citation & Analysis for the Family Historian Kemp, Thomas Jay: International Vital Records Handbook Stevenson, Noel: Genealogical Evidence Sperry, Kip: Reading Early American Handwriting Looking at Kentucky in particular, I suggest: Hogan, Roseann: Kentucky Ancestry Kleeber, John E.[editor]: The Kentucky Encyclopedia Sutherland, James F.: Kentucky Householders Sutherland, James F.: Kentucky Landholders Battle, Perrin & Kniffen: Kentucky - A History of the State In the Jackson Purchase region: Various county histories offered by the county genealogical and historical societies. For those with an interest in the Civil War period in the JP, the following would be of interest(some are journal articles, and are noted as such): Ash, Stephen V.: When the Yankees Came: Conflict & Chaos in the Occupied South Coulter, E.Merton: The Civil War 7 Readjustment in Kentucky Barton, Lon Carter: The Civil War in the Purchase[journal article] - Journal of the Jackson Purchase historical Society - V17, pp 79-91 Caldwell, Robert W.: The Civil War in Murray, Calloway County, Kentucky[journal article]. Journal of the Jackson Purchase Historical Society: V17, pp.113-123 Daniel, Larry & Bock, Lynn: Island # 10: Struggle for the Mississippi Valley Shuffett, Chuck: The Second Battle of Fort Heiman. [journal article]. West Kentucky Montage, May 1995, pp.7-14 Those journal articles may still be available through PERSI. The book items are probably available, if still in print, through amazon.com or barnesandnoble.com There are undoubtedly other resources which could be on this list, and anyone who can add a good resource to the list, please do so. There may or may not be a data posting tomorrow, as I must be out of town for a part of the day. I'll give a more definitive report on whether tomorrow on whether a data post will occur. -B ============================================================

    1. [KYJacksonPurchase-L] Skills Puzzler # 27 - Solution
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - I am dropping by today to give you the solution to the latest Skills Puzzler, which was concerned with grave markers, and what we can read from them. We had a good response to this one - 38 folks sent their thoughts on this to me, and everyone was able to spot at least one of the clues. As you will recall, we had a scenario in which a researcher had found a marble grave marker for Rupert Dinwiddie in one cemetery, and then, as she researched further, she found a limestone based marker, sitting on a cement base, in another cemetery for the same man - the birth dates were identical, but the death dates had different years. Both markers appeared to have weathered about identically. Our task was to determine which marker would be the more likely one to be correct. The really definitive clue to this Puzzler is in the fact that the limestone marker had a cement base under it. Cement(not concrete) was not used in this country until after 1823, as its components were not discovered until about 1820. That being the case, we know that the marker with the cement base was erected much later than the other stone, and, even though the weathering of each stone appeared to be about the same, limestone based markers will usually wear much faster than those of marble or solid granite. So the marble marker is the one we would feel is the more accurate of the two. In fact, it turned out to be that way, as the researcher did more digging. She found a lady descendant of Dinwiddie who told her that her grandmother had put up that later stone around the turn of the century. There was a Dinwiddie or two buried in that other cemetery, and the grandmother thought that one of the graves, which had no marker, was that of Rupert, who was her great-grandfather. She had a marker placed there, and gave the stone carver the wrong information on his death date. Its useful for us to know about these various components which surround grave markers - sometimes the most unusual sorts of knowledge will help solve a puzzle. -B ============================================================
