    1. [KYJacksonPurchase-L] Marshall County - Early Marriages - Part 9
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - Today, we are going to continue our review of early Marshall County marriages. In past installments of this series, we have worked our way up to the year 1851, and we will finish that year in this posting and begin with the year 1852. If you see a marriage in which you have an interest and would like to receive the full dataset for that marriage(which generally includes the date of marriage, name of the surety, who performed the ceremony, and the consents, if needed), please let me know and I will get that additional information out to you. And, as always, I appreciate your courtesy in not resending this entire message back to me with your request. At this time, it appears likely that there will not be a data post tomorrow. I will be working with the AOL staff for a time preparing the necessary groundwork to offer a US Land & Property Research "live" course through their on-line classroom facilities. If that preparatory work runs on as long as I think it may, there will be no time for a data posting. I will let the List know for certain about that tomorrow. Keep a good thought for those on our List who are in the path of Hurricane Floyd. I have heard from several who were either leaving their area or securing their property to ride it out. I know we all hope that things will not be as bad as it appears that they may be at this point today. -B ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Marshall County - Early Marriages - Part 9 Brown, David James, Isabel Gatlin, Granville J. 1. [KYJacksonPurchase-L] New Series - Calloway County - Early Newspaper Snippets - Part 1
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - Today, I am beginning a new series for Calloway County, which will examine some of the news items contained in the few extant early newspapers which we have for that county. We will begin in the year 1879 and move forward over a period of about 20 years in this series. If you see a name in the listing below on which you would like to have the contents of the snippet, let me know and I will get that information out to you. As always, your help in not resending this entire message back to me with your request is greatly appreciated. Because of the additional time element that is required in transcribing some of these snippets, the listing below will not be a long one, but I will, from time to time, continue to offer these, since they really give some life and personality to those who are mentioned within the snippets. You may get one that is one sentence long and says nothing more than the fact that so-and-so has gone away on a vacation. Or, you may get one that has a 75 line full obituary. The last group of these which I offered, from Graves County, were very popular, and I hope that some of you will see a kinsman in the list below. -B +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Calloway County - Early Newspaper Snippets - Part 1 Nix, Jeff Sebrae, Pomp Ely, Pete Anderson, Col. 2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - We set a new record on requests for a dataset - I have received 112 requests so far for the New Concord Cemetery file. That roundly defeats the earlier record of 87. And the requests are still coming in. Today, we are returning to our review of the 1840 census of Graves County. We have had two prior installments in this series, with is proving to be a popular one, as are most of those associated with Graves County. If you see a name of interest, and would like the complete age enumeration for that household, please let me know and I will get that information out to you. As always, you help in not resending this entire message back to me with your request is appreciated. I have shown the enumerations for the two Copeland men in the list, as I know that there is great interest in the Copeland family. We are continuing our early planning for the JP Homecoming 2000 event to be held next year. I will be posting a report on the results of the vote on exactly which set of dates on which to hold the event within a day or two(it will go to the mail group who have indicated that they wish to try to attend the event). At some point within the next couple of months, I hope to establish an informal web page on which the details of the event will be placed as plans are made. -B ============================================================ Graves County - 1840 Census - Heads of Households - Part 3 Campbell, Wilson Brown, John M. 1. [KYJacksonPurchase-L] Cook Surname - and my brick wall Jefferson Davis Cook
    2. Pat Scheele
    3. Hi - Less than a year ago, myself and another researcher, Carla, tryed to start a web site dedicated to the many Cook Families that lived in the Jackson Purchase Area - that page has grown from JP and now includes all of KY and TN .. A complete listing of our census - marriage and misc information is at: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Estates/4375/cookcens.html for all of these miscellaneous counties. Our main Cook page is at: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Estates/4375/cookmain.html My motivation for building these pages was to help others as well as myself find GREAT GREAT GRANDPA Jefferson Davis Cook - well - I still haven't broken down that brick wall - So I thought maybe someone else might see something I'm missing. What I know about Jefferson is that he went by several names - some called him "Dave" and sometimes he is listed as JD Cook - his wife was Mary Emma Roach Cook - they had 5 children but only 3 lived to adulthood - Willim O; David Iley and Jasper Marvin. David ILEY Cook was a farmer in GRAVES County and his family still lives in that area - but I am stuck as to where some of his desendants are currently - specifically - Milton Cook family moved to NOVI Michgan and I can't find them - Eunice Cook Stanley had 2 sons Jesse and Herman and I can't find them but suspect that they may still be in KENTUCKY. Jasper is my direct line and everyone has been contacted in this side .. Willim O. Cook died in St. Louis in the late 40's .. don't know much else about him - Back to Jefferson: Husband: JEFFERSON DAVIS COOK Birth: 5 Nov 1860 Place: CALLOWAY, County Kentucky, USA or was it Tennessee? I haven't a clue where this family came from ] Notes: Jefferson Davis Cook was a widow when he died in 1916. I have a copy of his death certificate in which Iley Cook is the informant. Little information is available on "David" Cook but a photo exists of him which was probably taken about 1896-1900 with his wife, "Emma" and boys Willie, Iley and Jasper Marvin. He was a farmer by trade. Wife's Notes... A photo taken about 1900 notes her name as Emma Matilda O'Roche. O'Rache. However, I belive that the notation was made many years after the photo. Census information for "Emma" Cook identifies her as the head of the household, a widow, born in Kentucky, father born in Tennessee, mother born in Tennessee with children: Willie, Jasper, and Ollie. (Census record for 1900). I have not found a census record for her in 1910 or beyond. By 1900 she had had 5 children total, only 3 living. She was enumerated in Carlisle County. * * * * * * * * * * Jefferson Davis Cook's death certificate stated that he was a widow when he died: Sep 23, 1916 in Ballard Co, Kentucky. It further states that he was born in Calloway Co, Ky on Nov 5, 1860 to Newton Cook. By trade he was a farmer. Iley Cook is the informant on the death certificate. Burial took place at Bethlehem Cemetery, Wickliffe, Kentucky. I believe that the Bethleham Church had a fire and lost church records from this era. I did not find a stone for Mary Emma Roach Cook when I visited the Bethleham Cemetary a few years ago. And while I have not found a death certificate for (Mary) Emma Roach Cook, my great great grandmother, I have found this census information. BALLARD CO, KENTUCKY 1880 Census #1864-218 COOK, Andrew, 26, head, laborer, Ky, Ky, Ky Do you know anything about this family? pscheele@navix.net Janey, 29, sis, Ky, Ky, Ky Jeff P., 18, bro, Ky, Ky, Ky is this Jefferson Davis Cook? Iley L Cook, head of household, white, 24, is married to Marvis G. Ballard Co. Jasper M. Cook , white, 16, enumerated with William J. Gardner Ballard Co. Will O Cook , white, 22 enumerated with Charlie McChristain What happened??? The death certificate for Jefferson Davis Cook is 1916. But the 1900 census shows Mary (Emma) already a widow in 1900. I could not find a census record for either Mary Emma Roach Cook or Jefferson Davis Cook in 1910. My guess is that Jefferson Davis Cook may not have been home at the time of the census taker's visit in 1900 and the information was recorded incorrectly. >From Don Simmons Publication "Graves Co, Ky Gen Abstracts", on Feb 22, 1882 an infant of J. D. Cook died and was buried at Antioch. These dates do not line up very well with the marriage date for Jefferson Davis Cook and Mary Emma Roach Cook. Another researcher, John Roach was kind to find the marriage record for Mary E Roach & J D Cook, married 1 Jan 1882 in Wickliffe, Ky. I believe that Mary Emma Roach could be the daughter of Joseph H Roach born 1832 Graves Co, Ky and Susan Louise born 1832 in Tennessee. More information about the Roach family follows later. I did say that Jasper was one of 5 children, 2 died and their names are unknown to me. It should be noted that Ollie on the census of 1900 is really DAVID ILEY COOK, brother of Jasper Cook. I have death certificates for Jefferson Davis Cook, David Iley Cook and Jasper Cook to "prove" this information. 1. [KYJacksonPurchase-L] Skills Puzzler # 28 - Solution
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - I want to stop by and give you the solution to the latest Skills Puzzler before this day is gone completely. Before I launch into the explanation of the solution, I think that I should point out that these Puzzlers are aimed at trying to help us hone our skills a bit and to find ways to perform research more efficiently. As a result, when I present the narratives for these puzzlers, some parts of the background information are not given, simply to make the narrative as short as possible. On this puzzler, about 6 folks asked how I knew that the Cornelius Knothead, shown as the head of household in the 1840 census, was the male listed as 50-60, since the head of the household could be a son of an older man living in that household, and the 1840 census does not connect the name of the head of household with any male in any age bracket. In this case, there was a male aged 5-10 and one aged 50-60. It was obvious that the male aged 5-10 was not the head of the household, so I did not present anything about the breakdown of the ages of the males in the 1840 census, just to save some words in the narrative. I am always heartened, however, by such questions, as they show that we have very sharp people with analytical minds with us on the JP List. The nub of the whole purpose of this Puzzler was to see if we could take a tax roll series which indicated that Knothead was there for several years and then suddenly disappeared, and couple that fact with what few records which were extant and try to determine what our next move should be. There is no question that we would all want to check those surviving marriage records, in the event that Knothead might have given a consent or appeared in some fashion therein. The same is true for checking the 1850 census records for other Knothead families(could Cornelius be living with a daughter or son's family, etc.). But can we shortcut the process a little and save some time? We can do so in some cases by being aware of what state laws may provide insofar as tax relief is concerned. In this case, the key time frame is the 1844-45 period. Reading the court minutes page by page, we found that on 22 May 1845, Cornelius Knothead appeared before the court and requested to be made exempt from paying taxes, as he had "...attained the age of 55 years on April 14th last...". In the state in question, men 55 and over were exempt from paying taxes. From that, we learned both his age and his birth date. He does not himself again appear in the court minutes that exist. However, again reading page by page, in 1848, there is a brief mention in the court minutes for the October term, in which three commissioners are appointed to "...lay off the dower lands for the widow Knothead, relict of Cornelius Knothead, deceased". From that, we learned that he had died sometime probably in 1848. Cornelius does not appear in any part of the existing marriage records. Anytime that someone suddenly disappears from a tax roll, especially if we know them to be in the 50-60 age group, we should make the court minutes our next stop, since men had to petition the court to be made exempt from paying taxes, and very few of them ever missed doing that(times do not change much, do they?)right at the very time that they turned 55, or whatever the age may have been that would cause them to become exempt. Court minutes are usually among the last records that most of us consult, because they are almost always unindexed. In this case, they should be our next stop, after the tax rolls, given what we know about the age of Cornelius. Does this mean that *every* person who reached the age at which he could claim an exemption actually did so? No, but we cannot assume that someone, for whatever reason(lack of proof of age, did not know his own age, lack of knowledge of the law, etc.), did not come forward and request the exemption. And we have to remember, too, that state laws governing who could be exempted(clerymen, public officials, etc.) from taxes changed regularly over the years, so we need to be aware of those laws and what they directed for each year taxes. Knowing the various possibilities which might cause a man to drop from a tax roll can be useful in pointing us in the direction we should follow in our next research step. -B ============================================================

Several visitors to Paducah were present and we were glad for their being in our worship service. This was an experience that will not be forgotten ... quite a special occasion. Highlights of the service ... the prelude and recessional were accompanied by the piper, Ed Merritt; and "The Calling of the Clans" was made by Bob Valentine (of the Clan Gordon).
