    1. [KYJacksonPurchase-L] Cemetery List: Boldry Cemetery, McCracken County
    2. My friends - Our good friend, Richard Davis, has supplied some additional cemetery records for McCracken County. I will be bringing these to you over the next day or two. Richard has very kindly agreed to let me post the JP items which he puts together fromt ime to time. -B ============================================================ Here is an incomplete burial transcription list for a remote, unknown, and very neglected, cemetery that I found in far western McCracken County. I believe that many more graves are there due to the sunk in places around, but there are no markers on them so that is why it is incomplete. I gave it the name "Boldry Cemetery" since the oldest marked grave that I could find had a last name of "Boldry" inscribed on it. If it does have a name, then I will correct it, however, I believe that all cemeteries need a name. Richard B. Davis *************************************************************************** Boldry Cemetery McCracken County, Kentucky Location: >From Exit 3 on I-24, turn west onto KY-305 (also known as Old Cairo Road) and drive approximately 3 miles to the "Y" junction of KY-305 and KY-358 (also known as Ogden Landing Road). Bear right at the "Y" junction and drive approximately 5 miles to the the 3-way stop intersection of KY-358 and KY-996 (also known as Metropolis Lake Road) that is located in Grahamville, Kentucky. Drive 0.2 miles to the intersection of KY-996 and KY-358 that continues west. Turn left onto KY-358 and travel 0.9 miles to an entrance on the left hand side of KY-358. This cemetery is in a remote part of a wooded section and is very dangerous to get in and out of. Entrance is not paved and does not have any spread gravel which makes it difficult to visit during late fall or early spring due to rain making the ground very soft. Also, snakes, insects, and other wildlife are in abundance year round so visitors should be very careful as to where they step and bring insect spray. History: The history of this tiny cemetery is unknown. The name "Boldry Cemetery" was given to it by myself as that is the oldest marked grave in the cemetery and no other name for it seems to exist. I believe that other people are buried here as there are several places the size of a grave that are sunk in appear to be in rows. However, no other headstones or markers are visible. There is one illegible headstone in the cemetery and the number "28", as in 1828, is legible and in near the right edge. BENSON, Elder E. W. b. Oct. 5, 1823 d. Oct. 17, 1882 BENSON, Gillie b. 1. [KYJacksonPurchase-L] Miscellaneous Files - Graves County - Bethel Cemetery
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - I have today completed converting another cemetery file that was on one of those several hundred floppies that I had filled over the years with JP data. This file contains the Bethel Cemetery in Graves County, located somewhat east of Pryorsburg. It contains 123 known burials, but it is a very old cemetery, with known burials there as early as 1830, with the earliest readable birth year showing 1784. There are almost certainly other burials in this old cemetery for which the markers have not survived, and there are a number of markers that are unreadable. The known surnames in this cemetery are: Blalock, Edds, Tripp, Wilson, Byrn, Rhodes, Pryor, Hendon, Lancaster, Hedge, Jones, Williams, Boyd, McClure, Waddy, Pate, Bryand, Love, Burton, Board, Riddell, Holifield, Boghard, Smith, Clusterman, Price, Minton, Wingo, Herndon, Clark, Wilson, Bradley, Holmes, Alexander, Moore, Janes, Gibson, Brown, Casey, Tucker, Calhoun, Coke, Danner, Johnson, Tyler, Jikes, Odell and Schofield. If you would like a copy of this file, just let me know and I will get it off to you. I will send it as a plain text attachment to an e-mail message, unless you specify that you must have it as a *straight e-mail* message. You will receive the complete file - time constraints will not permit me to go into the file and extract individual surnames. I am working on a Fulton County cemetery, which I may have ready by the end of the day. If so, I'll be back with that offering later. -B ============================================================

    1. [KYJacksonPurchase-L] Meredith Edwards Family
    2. Rebel L. Kreklow
    3. Searching for "any and all" information on the Meredith Edwards Family. According to unconfirmed sources, Meredith MAY have been the son of John Edwards and grandson of William Edwards & Polly Cramer. If so, Meredith's siblings MAY have been Hugh, Henry, Oliver, Charles, John, William E., Allen and Annie Edwards. Meredith's children MAY have been King M., Jackson B., Hugh H. (my gg-grandfather), Elijah, James, Milford, Allen B., Martha and Meridith Edwards. Meredith is found in the 1822 & 1823 Hickman County Tax Lists, 1825 Calloway County Tax List. 1829 Graves County Tax List. 1830 Graves County Federal Census. 1830 & 1833 Graves County Tax List. 1840 McCracken County Federal Census. 1850 Pulaski County (IL) Federal Census. My GG-Grandfather Hugh H. Edwards was born 05 November 1824 Calloway County, KY. A copy of this event's record would be appreciated if one of the Jackson Purchase Listers is researching at the Courthouse in Calloway County. The name, address and telephone number of a reliable and reasonable professional Jackson Purchase Researcher would also be appreciated. Thanks in advance for any assistance in sorting out my Edwards line. Regards, Rebel L. Kreklow

    1. [KYJacksonPurchase-L] Tip # 40-C - A Look At Lesser Known National Archives Records - Cont.
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - We will round out this week's data postings with a continuation of our look at some of the lesser known records held in Record Group 94 in the National Archives which can be useful to us in our family research. In prior posts, we have been looking at some specific holdings within RG94. Today, we are going to look at some of the medical records which are contained within that record group. These medical records span the period from 1814 to 1919. As you may recall, RG94 is collectively called the Records of the Adjutant General's Office, but the collection contains records from many different early organizations. In the case of the medical records, some were originally created by the AG's office, while others came from the Surgeon General's office. These latter records had gone to the Pension Office, and then on to the AG's organization. Here are some of the medical records in RG94 that we, as genealogists, would find useful: Field Records of Hospitals - 1821-1912. This is a huge collection of 11,000 volumes, which contain registers of the sick and wounded, order and account books, clothing and other descriptive books. The greater portion of these cover the Civil War period. Records on individuals include name, age, rank, organization and complaint, date admitted, date returned to duty, whether discharged, furloughed, transferred to another hospital or died and remarks. These records cover post, general, prison, base, field, regimental, brigade and division hospitals. There are lists for this entire series, arranged in a single numerical series, and there is a finding list. Mexican War Hospital Records - 1846-1848. This contains much of the same sort of information as the general records above, except pertaining directly to the War With Mexico. This series also includes registers of nurses and matrons and bread and laundry accounts. Contract Books - 1839 - 1849 & 1861 - 1865. This series contains contracts entered into with physicians, with dates and names and terms of each contract. Reports of Sick & Wounded - 1820 - 1860 - These are monthly and quarterly reports showing diseases and, for each month, the numbers suffering from those diseases that were admitted into a hospital and the number of deaths. The names of the deceased are shown Registers of the Physical Examination of Recruits - 1864 - 1912 - This series was kept by medical officers at recruiting stations, showing the location of the station, date, name of recruit, where born, age, occupation, marital status, personal description and whether admitted or rejected. There is also a smaller series available which has information on this same subject area for the years 1884-1912. As we get a little further along in this series, I will be addressing the question which several of you have asked me, and that is how to obtain copies of records in the various subgroups in RG94. In most cases, it can be done by mail, and I will get into detail on that process in the near future. As usual, there will be no data posts per se over the weekend, but I hope to have another cemetery file ready for offering, if all goes well time-wise. -B ============================================================

    1. [KYJacksonPurchase-L] Old Chestnut Tree
    2. James Thompson
    3. My parents and Great grandparents, at least, were married at the Old Chestnut Tree, Henry County Tenn. The site is located on the Old Murray and Paris Road at the Tennessee State Line. Of course there is no longer a "Chestnut tree" since the Chestnut blight killed all of them. To get to the location, go east from Hazel on the State Line Road. At the first stop sign out of Hazel (about 2 miles) turn right on the Old Murray and Paris Road. The state line, and the location of the "Old Chestnut Tree" is a few hundred yards south, on the east side of the road. My parents were married there. It was raining and the preacher drove from Paris and met them. Mom and Dad sat in their car, the preacher in his, and performed the Wedding. Just like a drive in wedding chapel. I don't know why the Chestnut tree was such a popular marring spot, but I had always assumed there was on "waiting period" in Tennessee for a license. Jim Thompson
