Sorry, somehow I missed the part about there being an Article on the Marrying tree. Does anyone know how to obtain a copy of this article. Marsha
I just noticed my goof. TN is on the SOUTHERN boundry of KY. I was evidently asleep when I wrote that. Sorry. Ann Supposedly there was an Old Marrying Tree in Henry County, KY. The TN > border starts on the western boundary of Hazel, KY.
Hi, everyone and Ann too, the idea of a Marrying Tree is intriguing, my grandparents were married beneath a huge tree in the old town of Columbus, KY in Hickman co. It seems that the tree was important, does anyone know how this tradition got started? Donna On Thu, 23 Sep 1999, Ann Watson wrote: > Supposedly there was an Old Marrying Tree in Henry County, KY. My ancestors were also from Calloway and Married in Henry. Could someone please tell me about the marrying tree, where was it and a history. I grew up in Henry County and this is really interesting. I would love to go explore next time I'm home and get a snap of it if it still stands. Fortunately, Henry County still has a lot of beautiful rural land. I was there last week searching for a cem where some of my folks are buried. It was down a gravel road at least a mile long and there were maybe 3 houses on it. But the woods look just like I imagine they would have in the early 1800s. Marsha

Supposedly there was an Old Marrying Tree in Henry County, KY. The TN border starts on the western boundary of Hazel, KY. Many couples from Calloway County went there to get married. That is why so many Calloway residents have marriages listed in TN. Hello everyone, I'm fairly new to this list and I thought I would throw my information out there and see if anyone is researching the same lines I am. I'm going to list this message in two parts: first, to everyone, and secondly, to our list host. To everyone: I am researching the COURTNEY line in Nelson, Hickman, and Graves Counties. I have the line going back (as far as KY in concerned) to John COURTNEY (born 15 July 1784 in Stafford County, VA, died 26 May 1833, in Nelson County, KY) who was married to Catherine COFFMANN on 07 February 1805, in Nelson County, KY. After the death of John, his wife, Catherine (along with their 12 children: Lewis b. 1804, Felix 1807, Walter Hay 1808, Allen 1815, Jacob 1815, Margaret Jane 1816, Mary Ann 1818, Sevilla 1819, Solomon 1823, Granville Clifford 1830, and Cordia Ann 1832), headed into Hickman County where the family settled for many years to come. The earliest I find a member of this family in Graves County is in the 1850 census -- Jacob COURTNEY, wife Polly Ann, children John, Sarah (Sally), Elizabeth, Epraim, and Martha. I believe, since they are listed in the Pryorsburg Twp which sits close to the Graves and Hickman line, that the family actually settled in Hickman and were absorbed by Graves when the county formed. Later in time, other branches of elder John's family settled in Graves. One of those settling in Graves happened to be my great grandfather, Leo Byrl COURTNEY who was born 30 December 1885 and died 01 November 1939. He was married to Sarah Bernardine PIERCEALL. Sarah is buried at St. Jerome's Cemetery in Fancy Farm, Graves County, KY. Sarah died well after Leo -- I'm having a bit of trouble locating the grave that Leo rests in. According to my records, he died in Mayfield, though he lived in Fancy Farm. I've obtained the online information from KY Vital Records, but I was wondering if somebody has access to the microfiche that the death records are found on? If someone would look him up for me, it would save me the trouble of having to send away for a copy of the death certificate (at this time - I know that eventually I'll end up needing a copy of it). I have a member of this list who has graciously gone out and taken pictures at two cemeteries for me and if I can locate his grave site, I may be able to bribe her to take one more picture for me. Any help in locating Leo's resting place would be greatly appreciated. In addition, if any others out there are researching the COURTNEY (or PIERCEALL and TOON) line, feel free to get in touch with me. To our list owner: I must say, the little time that I've belonged to this list, I've already noticed that it is far and above most of the other lists. You are doing a great service to many of us. I was wondering, since I'm new to this list and don't really know what is available to me, what types of records can I obtain from you? Nearly every day, you are posting from files you possess and I don't know if I should wait to see something I need, or if I can place requests. I know that your schedule must be full and I don't want to be a hindrance. >From what I've seen, and the archives I've looked at, my guess would be that your specialty is in Graves County??? Are you as closely familiar with Hickman? These questions are general, I know, but I just want to get a feel for what is available to me if I need it. I want to thank everyone for taking the time to read this lengthy message (future postings will not be so long). Best regards, Morgan H Courtney npugeda@earthlink.net
My friends - As I spend my last evening in the city of St.Louis before returning home tomorrow, I am going to bring to you a short piece of history about Calloway County's first jail. This is taken from "History of Calloway County - 1931", a retrospective put together by the Murray Ledger & Times newspaper. From time to time, I'll bring other narratives to you from this publication. Tomorrow, we will close out the week with another in the Skills Puzzler series. -B ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Calloway County's First Jail "On March 13, 1823, William Jones, Eli Cochran and Henry Darnall were appointed commissioners to let the building of a public jail in Wadesboro. The contract was let to Bins Derrington, who built the jail according to the following specifications: to be twelve feet square, of hewed logs and covered with a cabin roof. The building was completed at a cost of $177.00 and was in use until 1827 when a new building was ordered to be erected. The second jail was also of log stucture, built by Samuel Peter for the sum of $496.88. It was abandoned, however, in 1833, and in 1836 a third jail and a more substantial one was erected, costing about $1600.00. The building was well constructed of oak blocks, securely spiked and enclosed by a brick wall, after a negro prisoner kindled a fire therein and was himself burned to death in the flames. No other jail was built until the removal of the county seat from Wadesboro to Murray in 1842."
Hello Bill and all, I am a transplanted native of Hickman, KY now (for the last 50 years) living in Washington State. I am looking for any information (or means of finding same) about the following people: My paternal grandfather, Ballard Preston DeHart married Martha Sue Higgs some time in the mid 1890's. I have his ancestry but have nothing about her. I don't know if she was a native of Fulton or one of the neighboring counties. She had a sister named Nell who was married to "Bud" (real name unknown) Dotson. At on time, in the 30's, Bud and Aunt Nell worked a farm, just out of Kenton, TN, which was owned by a Mr. Bransford of Union City.I believe that both Uncle Bud and Aunt Nell were living in Hickman when they died. The father of Aunt Nell and my grandmother, Martha (Mattie), and aunt Nell was (I'm told) Charley (or Charlie) Higgs. I am also looking for information about my maternal g-grandparents --William Hamil and his wife Belzonie (or Belzonia). Great Grandmother Bell was the daughter of a William Carter and his wife Sara (Sarah) Okey (or Okie --- or Oke). William and Bell Hamil's daughter Maude was my grandmother (married to Clay Puckett - the son of John Franklin Puckett and his wife Martha Carolyn Coleman, of Hickman County) If anyone has any information about, either, the Higgs, Hamil, Puckett or Coleman families I would be grateful. ........ (As I said earlier, I have a great deal of info on my DeHart predecessors, but any more on them would also be appreciated - especially the exact marriage date of Ballard and Martha).
Please forward Calloway Co. marriage info for Arthur Perry and Elizabeth Schroader. Thanks!
My WATERS, THORNTON, BOAZ relitives were married in: Charles Co. MD Pittsylvania Co. VA Caswell Co. NC. They came to Calloway Co. KY about 1846. My early McKEEL's were married in Beaufort Co. NC & Perry Co. TN. They came to Calloway Co. KY about 1877 So my ancesters were not there as early as Donna's were. But I looked in vain for the marriage of my Grandpa McKeel & Grandma Waters marriage. They were married in 1895. They were married at the popular wedding place that was called "The Old Chestnut Tree". I do not know how long before this date, that this was a popular wedding place. I saw one write up on it, in a history periodical. It said the place was East of Hazel in Calloway Co. KY. But, my Grandma's Bible stated they were married in TN. It was in the Henry Co. TN records, that I found their marriage. It took some digging since the marriage was incorrectly listed as W.H. McKeel the groom and the bride Eula Walters instead of Waters. Always check Henry Co. TN and also beware of misspellings. >Hi, everyone, looking at these early marriages reminds me of a question >regarding folks who ened up in Calloway but for whom there is no marriage >record. Hi, everyone, looking at these early marriages reminds me of a question regarding folks who ened up in Calloway but for whom there is no marriage record. Are there any ideas about the main areas from which people migrated to Calloway before the 1830's? My set of ancestors were in the area from at least 1827 on but their first child was born in Missouri before that time. My supposition is that this might relate to river travel in the area since the general direction of migration was east to west not west to east in most cases. Anyone have any ideas about where I should begin to search for marriage records on these early Calloway residents? I looked at all the Calloway records that were available at the Pogue Library in Murray to no avail. Donna

Richard, Records can be carried to the State archives in Nashville if they have any connection to TN. They copy, keep a clopy, and give you one to place in any Library that you select. They do not charge anything and will make as many copies as you like for a fee. I have forgotten the charges for each tape. I would contact my State Archive. Sorry about the incomplete letter.I 've a 19 month granddaughter in my lap so don't fuss about caps she likes that button. To complete my letter on Grigsby family, Mary Elizabeth Stum was b. 11/2/1852 to ? Stum and ?Unsell. In an note I've a possible name for her father: 'Lem Preston". I do know he was in the Civil War don't know which side. They had four children Mary mar. Horace Grigsby, Martha mar. a Rawlings, James mar. ? and George ( born after their father came home from the CV War & author of "THOSE WICKLIFFE BOYS"knew where he was buried. Their mother died shortly after he was born. A 'Doctor Scott' and wife took in this family (does anyone know of a connection of Scott family and any of my names) and helped raise this family. I don't know if he was a medical doctor or named DOCTOR, I had an UNCLE DOCTOR SCOTT GRIGSBY named for him.. I talked with Glen Dixon ( he did Unsell research) a lot and he thought that the two Unsell brothers that mar. two Dewesse sisters that a I find on the DAWES COMMISSION 1896 REPORT may be in my family, a picture of GRANDMOTHER UNSELL has a NATIVE AMERICAN look. AND one of the grandmothers was disowned when she married one of these grandfathers, my Grannie Coleman did not remember which! ---Also--- on the 1850 census for McCracken CO. there is a Thomas A Brown at house 204, and there is a Lilly family living at 339 and I think my gr gr grandfather living at 340. Dose anyone know of a connections? My family live to be old age in their 90's and their families had large families, I can get everyone in TX documented but very little history survived a house fire. ANY help is welcome! Sorry about the length but someone asked for all I knew. My mother has a suitcase of information I am trying to sort , if I find more I will send it. Unsell m. Stum 1850's? Lilly m. Grigsby 1850's? Stum m. Grigsby 1870's? Grigsby m. Coleman 1910 TX. all others are in KY I think.---Alicia
Bill, I would like the info on the marriage between James N. Bucy and Lucretia Bailey. Thanks
My friends - Today we will resume our review of early Calloway County marriages. In the past 31 segments of this series, we have worked our way from 1823 to 1840, and we will continue with that year in this segment. If you see a marriage of interest, and you would like the complete data set for that marriage(which usually includes the dates of license and marriage, who performed the ceremony and the consents, if required), let me know and I will forward that information to you. As always, your help in not resending this entire message back to me with your request is appreciated. The list below will be shorter than usual, as I am writing this on my laptop in my hotel room in St.Louis, where I will be through Friday. -B +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Calloway County - Early Marriages - Part 32 Furches, David M.
