My friends - Today, we are going to continue our look at some snippets from early newspapers in the JP region. I use the word "early" advisedly, because there were newspapers in the region which date back further than those that we are reviewing. However, as is the case with most early newspaper operations, archiving was unheard of, and what we have today has survived, in many cases, by sheer luck alone. I will list below the names of the individuals who appear in these narratives. if you would like a copy of the abstract of the newspaper piece, let me know and I will get it to you. As always, your help in not resending this entire message back to me is greatly appreciated. We know that when dealing with these newspapers, that, in most cases, we must consider them to be derived(or secondary) sources, unless the individual who wrote the article actually witnessed or participated in the reported scenario himself. There are many beginning genealogists who believe that a newspaper item, especially if it is an obituary or a birth announcement, represents the epitome of accuracy. Such is not the case - even today. We can reflect on experiences some of us may have had with present day newspaper reporting of events, and get a little idea of how it was back in the 19th century when there was no rapid communication as we have it today. Its always good to get corroborating evidence to check the accuracy of any newspaper item. -B ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Calloway County - Early Newspaper Snippets - Part 2 Holland, Jessie Jones, C.B. Hello Bill: Would you kindly send the JP Newspaper snippets that include C.B. Jones and Harrison Jones. Thanks in advance and do keep up the tips and puzzlers articles. They are so interesting. Even if we don't participate in the puzzler, you can rest assured that we're reading every word. Jess
My friends - I want to stop by and give you the solution to the latest Skills Puzzler concerning Census Interpretation. I had only 4 responses on this one, which leads me to believe that it was a tough one. All of the responses outlined very solid approaches that could be taken to try to resolve the question before us. However, they did not address how to directly use census records(which was the theme of this Puzzler) alone to resolve the issue. You will recall that our goal was to determine which of 3 men with the name James Jackson, shown in a "burned" KY county in the 1840 census, is most likely identical to the known ancestor of the researcher, who appears in a GA county in the 1850 census. Any of the three KY Jackson men, based upon the age enumerations, could be the 1850 GA Jackson. In this case, the descendant copied, from the 1850 GA census record, the names of 20 families above and 20 families below the listing for James Jackson. She then went back to the 1840 census and compared the GA neighborhood to the neighborhoods of each of the three James Jacksons in the KY county. In only one instance did she find a match. There were 9 families living close to one of these James Jackson men, out of 32 family names that were copied from the 1850 GA census. As a result, there is very little doubt that the 1840 KY James Jackson with some of the same neighbors as the James Jackson in GA in 1850 is the same man - and he was not the James Jackson in KY with the elderly man living in the household in 1840. What good did this do for our researcher? After having made the match, she went back to the 1840 census record and copied the names of neighbors close to her James Jackson who were not on the 1850 GA census. Looking again at the matching families in the two census records, she found that almost all of the older ones(in the 1850 GA census) were born in NC. As a result, she was able, after some additional research in NC, to pinpoint where the families originated, and she also found several of the older 1840 neighbors in that area, and some of them were found to be relatives, including a family which was found to be a part of James Jackson's wife's lineage. This could have been done by using only the 1850 GA census, but by using both census records, she was able to add surnames to her hunt, which undoubtedly helped reduce the time spent in the NC portion of the research. If we use census records to the fullest extent possible, they can often still provide clues when we may think we have exhausted everything in them. -B ============================================================
Bill, I just want to thank you for taking the time to send out these puzzlers and such. I haven't answered any yet - mostly because I am one of the new kids on the block and want to see what is going on but I really do appreciate the hints you are giving. It is an education in itself. Betty E. More
I am looking for the parents of Elizabeth Jane "Lizzie" Cruce who married Sam H. Hardy December 1885 in Obion Co. Tennessee. Sam H. Hardy was the son of Joseph H. Hardy and Nancy Anne Graham Hardy of Fulton Co. Kentucky. According to a 1900 census Lizzie was born in Tennessee 1872-1874. A Press Cruce married one of Sam's sisters. Was Press a brother of Lizzie? Does anyone have access to the marriage index in Obion Co. TN to verify the marriage date of Sam and Lizzie? Any information about the Cruce family will be much appreciated. Also looking for information on John Hardy, brother of Sam H. Hardy. Johnnie Hardy was born about 1862 and Sam H. Hardy was born about 1864. John and Sam Hardy both were known to have left Fulton Co. Kentucky and later settle in Arkansas. Sam Hardy died about 1907. After Johnnie Hardy left Kentucky, I have lost track of him. Does anyone know if he ever married or had any children. Where did he go after he left Arkansas? Linda

I am searching for the Robey family that lived in Fulton in the 1910 to 1920 or later period. Nora Robey married my father, Walter Harrison Collins, around 1911. She died on September 15, 1920 (at age 31) and is buried in Fulton. I have her Death Certificate. It lists her father as G. Robey and mother's maiden name as Mary Underwood. She had at least one brother and two sisters. I don't know the brother's name but the sisters were Barbara Robey and Julie Robey. The Robeys had a farm near Fulton. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Dick
Fran, your personal e-mail address is not showing up on the last e-mail to me. Please put it in the body of your message. Amelia
Fran, what a small world, Ramelle is my mother's sister. I do not have a copy of the news clipping you refer to and would love to have a copy. What was your maiden name? Respond by personal e-mail to apvid@aol.com. Thanks, Amelia
I am looking for information on my fathers relatives. His name was Halford (sometimes spelled Hafford) Lennis Lovins, son of Will Robert Lovins and Nancy Jane (called Bay) Blalock Lovins. They lived in the New Concord-Pottertown community. I was told at one time there was a lady that had all of the Lovins family tree, going back to the 17th or 18th century, but she has sinced passed away and unfortunatly so has the information. If there is any one out there that can help me please let me know. Lori Lovins Randolph
My friends - Today, we will resume our review of the 1840 census of Graves County. As we know, in census records prior to 1850, only the name of the head of the household is given, with the other members of the household shown only by numbers in age groups. If you see a name which is of interest to you, and you would like to have the full age enumeration for that household, drop me a line and I will forward that information on to you. As always, your help in not resending this entire message back to me with your request is greatly appreciated. Tomorrow, we will have some additional early newspaper snippets. Those had a very large following in prior posts, and even when they do not provide specific genealogical data, they do often give us an insight into the human side of our progenitors. -B +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Graves County - 1840 Census - Heads of Households - Part 4 Ragsdale, Mat Ezell, Frederick Jackson, Samuel Patrick, Thomas Bostic, Armstead Tucker, Levi Mills, Harrison Reid, James F. Does anyone have access to a tax roll that could tell me when my grandparents first appeared in KY? His name was James Wister ELLEDGE and his wife was Georgia Ann. I know they were in Fulton, KY, about 1926 and could have been there as early as 1922. They may have lived in Water Valley, KY, before moving to Fulton. They owned a house at 411 Fourth St. in Fulton until their death. Thanks for your help. Amelia in VA
I have just ate supper with my 92 year old grandfather. He told me that there was actually 2 marrying trees. One on the Old Murray Paris Road on the KY-TN line (which was a chestnut tree) and the other was at Crossland which is Southwest of Hazel, Kentucky (this was an oak tree). My grandfather Guthrie Grogan and my grandmother Zenie Estelle Outland were married there in the rumble seat of an old chevy car.

I have a copy of an old deed that shows a father & son relationship that I need. However, the relative who gave me this copy doesn't have the recording information. The deed is recorded in the Graves County Courthouse. Is anyone going there who could use the index to find which book and page the deed is recorded on? Please reply off-list.
