    1. [KYJP-L] Identity of William Hunt, Jr.
    2. Found this abstracted deed in Don Simmons's Jackson Purchase Journal, number not noted: Hickman Co. Deed Bk ?-332 dated 12-13-1831: Wm. Hunt, Jr. and Samuel J. [should be S.] Williams and Catharine Williams, wife of said Samuel, of Hickman County, KY, to Baker Woodruff of same, for consideration of $90 one tract of land being the N.E.Q [quarter] of Section 3, ownship 4 Range 4 West containing 160 acres. Wit. Robert Walker William Hunt, Jr. Harrison A. Philips Samuel J. [S.] Williams Catharine Williams Is anyone familiar with the grantees in this deed? Samuel S. Williams and his wife Catharine [nee Stephens] were married in Henderson Co. in 1817. Samuel S. died intestate ca 1838 (administration Nov 1838) by presumed elder son, J. H. Williams, aka Jesse H. Williams. Jesse H. Williams later lived in Ballard Co., which was formed from Hickman Co. Who is William Hunt, Jr.? What is his relationship to Samuel J. and Catherine? They seemed to be co-tenants or tenants in common. E.W.Wallace

    1. [KYJP-L] Tip # 40-D - A Look At Lesser Known National Archives Records - Cont.
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - Today, we will close out the week's data postings with another installment in the Tips series related to some of the lesser known records contained in the National Archives which can contain material valuable to genealogists. We have been reviewing a small part of the records contained in Record Group 94 - Records of the Adjutant General's Office. We have seen in previous posts that there is a wealth of information on various institutions and the people within those groups in RG 94. There are a number of records in RG 94 which relate to special commissions and courts of inquiry which were set up in the 19th century. Here are two of those which may contain genealogical material of interest: Hawkins-Taylor Commission (1863) - this group of records consists of 2 volumes, with an index, and is concerned with claims of officers and men for military service in the Departments of the West and the Missouri in 1861-1862. The records on individuals include the name of the claimant, rank, organization, duration of service, and payments allowed and for what purpose, as well as notations of other records in the AG's department which relate to the individual. United States Christian Commission (1861-1866) - this unique group of records covers an attempt by the New York Young Men's Christian Association(YMCA) to organize into a group to systematize, combine and extend their work to minister to the religious needs of the soldiers in the Civil War. These records are fragmentary and in poor order, but some of the correspondent's books of letters have survived, especially for the New England soldiers. There are also photograph albums for the 1864-65 time frame, containing autographed photos of Christian Commission workers, Memorandum Books, containing names and addresses of persons to whom newspapers and supplies were sent, and many other interesting areas. There are 813 individual groups of records in RG 94. This is a vast amount of material, and impossible to cover with any justice in these short posts. In the next segment of this series, I will discuss how to gain access to these records. As is customary, there will be no data posts over the weekend, but I will drop by with a file or two which may be of interest. -B ============================================================

    1. [KYJP-L] Graves County - Vital Statistics Records - Deaths - 1852-1859 - Part 12
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - Today, we are going to continue our review of the Graves County Vital Statistics Death Records. In prior segments in this series, we have advanced from the year 1852 to 1857, and we will continue with that year in this installment. It is probably time for me to say again that these early records are woefully inadequate and incomplete. Only about 40%-50% of the actual births, marriages and deaths which occurred ever found their way into these VS records. And those that did carry a high error rate. So use the data with appropriate caution. Unfortunately, in Graves County, due to the courthouse fire in 1887, we may never find any other corroborating or disproving data on these deaths. If you see a name in the list below which belongs to your family, and you would like the complete data set for that individual(which generally includes the date of death, age of the deceased, sex, if not obvious, where born, where died, marital status, cause of death and names of parents), let me know and I will get that information out to you. As always, your help in not resending this entire message back to me with your request is greatly appreciated. We will finish out the week's postings tomorrow with another in the Tips series. -B ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Graves County Vital Statistics Records - Deaths - Part 12 (Age and sex, if not obvious, are shown after the names) Pitman, Elizabeth, 27 Akins, H.M., (M), 32 White, F. 3. In Kentucky and surrounding states I am researching: Grigsby/ Lilly, Paducak, McCrachen CO KY 1850-1890, Stom-Stum/Unsell 1840-1890 maybe Wickliffe, Barren CO KY? Horace Grigsby mar. Mary Stum, Paducak, KY moved to TX 1880's, my Grandmother was born 1889 in Azel, Parker CO, TX . In 1840 census for Paducak census I think William Grigsby maybe kin, in the 1850 census I think house 340 is my great- grandparents, I wish I knew more about #339 and # 204. Someone somewhere knows about the Unsell and the Stum families I don't think that person is reading my notes, can't reach everyone. Has anyone heard of a day by day diary kept in an entry book by a store owner in Blandville, KY? Glen Dixon told me about it reading in it years ago. Where ever it is, that book has decades of information in it.--Alicia
